don't sell yourself short, you are one of the people putting in the work and creating, these are great advertisements for amazing places that deserve support and attention
We reluctantly moved from MI to Indiana 22 years ago. Only then did I realize how much nautical lingo was in my vocabulary. Missing the Lakes, lighthouses, the North, fresh fish, and even the weather! Thank you for these excellent videos! ❤
My neighbor, the late, great Harry Adams was from Alpena. He was a nationally known fly tyer(sp?) And wrote a column on fly tying for Field and Stream. He was a local expert on arrowheads from the Pottawatomie and Iriquois tribes who lived near the Grand River where I live now. Harry was 75 when I was 8 and I was born in 1964. He took me fishing and arrowhead hunting in my youth. His wife was born on Valentine's Day and I was a day later. She made me cookies for my birthday. I wish I knew her first name. If everyone from Alpena is similar, it must have been a great place to grow up.
Just donated! My family and I live in Michigan and I am constantly fascinated by the rich history of this state. We just spent a week vacationing in a cottage on the shore of Lake Huron just north of Harrisville. Thunder Bay is a treasure! Thank you for bringing Michigan's many stories to life.
Wow! Thanks, Chuck and Poppins for telling this story so well and humbly donating a chunk of your revenue to the cause of preservation of the lighthouse! My grandfather Ingvar was a lighthouse keeper in Norway (my mother Ingrid grew up on an island!) so finding your channel today from my Chicago apartment feels like a welcome treasure❤ Ahoy!
Oh, now I want to rent a rubber boat and to out to the Island next time we make it up there! I love preservation. Maybe this is something to spend my summers doing once I retire. Thanks for sharing!
I grew up in Port Huron but I live in North Carolina now. I was just up in Michigan last week visiting family. I've been to Alpena many times. I love Michigan history. I left Michigan but it has never left me. Thanks for posting.
Awesome!!!! Rick is my brother in law! Proud of y'all....born in Michigan Spent my summers in Ossineke and greetings from Germany! Here w my beautiful German wife! God bless you all....and love and hugs to Alpena!
It's amazing how beautiful that part of the world is. I love the history of the people who made it their home. Thank you for your hard work that's educational as well as entertaining.
We have a house in Atlanta-Canada Creek Ranch, and we had a Mexican lunch on the water in Alpena last Saturday!!! It’s a LOVELY AREA!!!! All the beaches along that coast are awesome!!!
I was stationed there from 1975 until early 1977. I was there when the tall sailing ships came thru in 1976. I enjoyed every minute of it and never wanted to leave. But then I went to Marquette and lived in the first floor of the big red lighthouse.
Spent time out there as a kid visiting the Coasties with my parents, climbing the lighthouse, fishing around the old boathouse and wooden pier, and "treasure hunting" on the SW side of the island in the gravel. Great memories.
Another AWESOME VID!!! Thanks for your time! Most of all THANK YOU TO ALL VOLUNTEER FOLKS BUSTING THEIR BUTTS to take care of our history!! P.s I'm a proud resident of northern Michigan!! Thanks to all. I really would like to visit some day when I'm finally retired! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
“Consuming instead of creating” and “doing work for free as a volunteer” made me remember a quote from George Bernard Shaw, known as “A Splendid Torch.” Appropriate, considering the lighthouse subject.
This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no "brief candle" for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations. George Bernard Shaw
The awesome adventures just keep coming…too cool. A donation on behalf of the Restless Viking for the lighthouse restoration is on the way. Thank you Mr. Chuck and Ms. Poppins for the adventure via my La-Z-Boy. Explore away.
The opening on the river was great and brought back many fond memories. I worked in a shop on the river, you could see it in the background, and watched fishermen troll for walleye. Alpena is a great town! I actually lived at the North end of Grand Lake. Miss it!! This was an amazing video from an area that I truly love. So much history! I lived almost within walking distance of two lighthouses at Presque Isle, MI.
In Coldwater where I was raised, we had the Wing House, which is now a museum. I used to play on the steps there as a young kid in the 70s. But the house was built by a rich New Yorker whose son had moved to Coldwater in the 1830s. The father built a replica of their New York home so his son was not so scared living in Coldwater. I understand the sounds coming from the wilderness were terrifying to him back then. I imagine there were an abundance of wolves, coyotes, cougar, black bear and grizzly bear I would imagine would make the surrounding forests quite concerning, especially at night. So maybe that is one good reason they chose to live on islands back then also. The Wing House is now a museum, that you and Poppins might already know.
Have met many volunteers at Michigan's lighthouses. Such awesome people who share in the love of history and Michigan. Aren't we lucky? Thanks, Chuck and Poppins for another super video!❤
Thanks for taking us along on your and now my adventure. Truely great to see people so involved with saving the past and ready to roll their sleeves up and do the work, like generations passed did. Contribution to mower fund and Subscribed!
You were right about people who give back for free. I’ve worked with thousands of volunteers over the years. I’m always impressed by their heart by their humanity. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story from a place not too far from where I went to high school in Oscoda. I’ll click your link and add to the donations. Keep exploring.
I am just north of there, but I lived in Alpena for nearly 20 years it sure is nice to see people volunteering their time and work to make things better than what they were.
Awesome presentation, thank you..! Was in Thunder Bay in 2002 doing the ROV survey of the shipwrecks. Hope to return and do more explorations on land and Lake...
Excellent job with this. You two are really hitting your stride with these quality videos. I was born in Montana but moved to Oscoda in 1953 where I grew up and visited Alpena many times. I was unaware of the history lesson that you just shared with us. It's great to still learn pieces of history of our great State of Michigan. Keep up your good work and thanks.
What a fantastic history lesson. I would love to visit this place sometime. It is really interesting to me how in trying to save some of our history, these folks have become a part of it.
Great work on the video! Love to see this place being maintained and hope it’s around for years to come. Local history is so important and needs to be preserved future generations!
When I donated via the link, it did not show me the current total that’s been raised. I am curious if you don’t mind sharing?. I noticed that the video has 68,000 views. Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone who has watched just gave one dollar? Cheers to the both of you for helping get donations. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I remember when they started out there that the light house had a major crack up the side of it which they seem to have repaired. It was in rough shape when the group started. A friend of my dad's (Freer Butt) first told us of the group. Back in the late 60's my cousins along with my brother and dad sailed out to the island and were given a tour by the Coast Guardsmen. It was really neat but I wish the govt. had left all the buildings there. Excellent video and it brought back many memories. Alpena is a wonderful city to visit with a lot of history including the Jessie Besser Museum and the Great Lakes Marine Sanctuary. It is a great visit to the Sun Rise side of Michigan.
The crack is still there and in desperate need of repair. It is one of the items at the top of the Thunder Bay Light House Preservation Society's list of things to accomplish!
Hiyas Restless Viking's I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I'm glad I found this channel. I love and cherish the Great Lakes region and am proud to live here. Hej from another Norsk Pojke
Thank you so much…what an awesome video. That travel and hike is not for the faint of heart. Donated. What a fabulous group of dedicated historians. My mom lived and worked in Alpena for many years. Lots of holiday memories. It will always hold a place in my heart. 💜
Thankyou Mr. Viking. I enjoyed this video as I have enjoyed others on your channel. I suggest you look up Alexis Dahl, another entering and educational presenter.
We watch these folks go out to the Lighthouse from the Alpena Marina on occasion. I would love to someday join them. I was blessed to be a docent for Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, which is a little older tower a while ago in Port Huron. What treasures these structures are.
From the great “O” state to the south, I salute your videos on Michigan as I’ve always held that state up north in awe, as wilderness to a kid who spent many vacations in the wilds of Michigan. Thank you.

Have you done a video on South Fox Island yet? Some really interesting history there, such as "King Strang" and a beautiful lighthouse and quarters that's currently undergoing restoration. I visited in and late 90s before restoration started and was amazed with how little vandalism and looting there was. Being 16 miles off shore helps, I'm sure.
I saw this about a year ago when I went on a lighthouse cruse on the lady Michigan. I started hearing more and more about this island and stuff. Hopefully you got a chance to stop in at Thunder Bay Winery and get Poppins something to drink. Their Devil's River is the wine my wife and I always keep a supply of because nobody has ever not loved it. Plus the people who own it are local. Great video!
As always a great presentation with lots of history and personal interest included. We enjoy your channel because it is interesting and you don't over do it. Thanks.
Great tour, informational. My great grandfather travled from Luxembourg all the way to Alpena in 1899, so the area is very near n dear to us. Thanks to all that help keep our lighthouses beautiful.
What a great video. I am from Mich. but lived in the lower Pen. I have not seen into southern Mich. much . I'm from Muskegon & love the UP which a haven't seen much of but have been up around Munising. Now I live in North Carolina & haven't been to Mich since 2016. I sure do miss it.
Chuck & Poppin. I just wanted to say your videos are great. Love all the Michigan history you explore. Also your passion for preserving these historical sites. Good luck with all your future travels!!!

Each one is a heartfelt adventure🙌💚🌼
What a lucky guy you are to have Poppins! What a great sport! 😊❤️👍
She is amazing!
I'll probably never own a boat and I strongly appreciate that y'all make videos in places I'll never get to see otherwise.
Thank you for reminding me how great it is to live in Northern Michigan (Petoskey).
Alpena... my hometown. Your newest history lesson showed me things I grew up by but was oblivious to... until now. Thank you!
I grew up there too... If you ever want to know what people acted like back in the '80s, it's great to visit and find out.

If everyone from Alpena is similar, it must have been a great place to grow up.
I had some business there twice😅, and this place takes you back in time. You might even find a bar open after dark. 😅
Are u a doper and druggie DanP?
If everyone who watches this video would donate just $1.00, it would help us tremendously! Thank you! ❤

I don't know your beliefs . . . And not trying to offend. But Thank You and may God Bless you for your generosity.

We are salt of the earth.
I sure appreciate you and Poppins doing all of this in my home state which I cannot afford to travel in these days.

I love the wonderful state of Michigan and truly appreciate learning more about it.
Plus up the cost of this are the two Presque Isle lighthouses. Wonderful piece you have done about this island. Kudos to you!

Well, you came to alpena and I didn't even get to see you guys 😢
My first wife told the story that her great grandmother was the first white child born in that area. No documentation but her name was Winona.
What a fantastic history lesson. I would love to visit this place sometime. It is really interesting to me how in trying to save some of our history, these folks have become a part of it.
Love you guys and all that you do for our great state of Michigan.

Great show Chuck and Poppins.
y'all went out there in that tiny boat? brave
?? Probably one of the best boats for rough seas, if you know your boats.
BIG FAN of your guys videos. I would love a video on US 12 the road that runs from Detroit to Chicago
I live along US 12 near the border, I'd like this too. I know it was called "The old Chicago Trail" but haven't learned a lot more about it.
Old Sauk Trail from Amherstburg, Ontario to Chicago and beyond. Traveled by many Natives to obtain their payments from the French Canadians then the British starting in 1763 (at Détroit), then the British at Fort Malden/Amherstburg after 1796 when Detroit turned over to the Americans.
@@Kristin1958 Thank you!
Though it's like 50 years newer, Sherwood Pt Light House (Door County WI) was also automated in 1983. I recall the 3 man crew, supplemented by Coasties from Station Sturgeon Bay WI up till it was automated. The CG still owns the area where the Lighthouse stands and it's used as a Moral/Recreation facility for active duty and retired military folks to say. Last time I visited the light house when it was manned was in 1980 when I was stationed on the CGC Mobile Bay (WTGB-103). Took me a while to realize that what you meant by first settlement was first white settlement. I thought we were going to see an ice age settlement which would’ve been pretty big news.
I slept in that building with a group of summer campers during a storm in the summer of 1998!
This reminds me of our visit to the Huron island’s lighthouse in Lake Superior. You should go there and make a video. Launch your boat in big bay
Awesome adventure & great info . The water in between sugar & t.b. Islands we call the Caribbean stunning views !
If it wasn't for that, it would be in shambles.
I saw this about a year ago when I went on a lighthouse cruse on the lady Michigan. I started hearing more and more about this island and stuff. I have liked lighthouses for sometime a few years ago I got into horse riding I just thought it would be soo cool go to an island on a boat ride a horse around look at the lighthouse.
Also thank you for donating to this, kind of got a chill watching this and seeing what is going on there.
So glad I found you guys! Great video.💙💙
Hopefully you got a chance to stop in at Thunder Bay Winery and get Poppins something to drink. Their Devil's River is the wine my wife and I always keep a supply of because nobody has ever not loved it. Plus the people who own it are local.

Great tour, informational. My great grandfather travled from Luxembourg all the way to Alpena in 1899, so the area is very near n dear to us. Thanks to all that help keep our lighthouses beautiful.
Thanks for sharing!
