- Join EFCN for this webinar series designed to help small wastewater system operators pass their certification exams. The series started with a 1-hour overview of study tips and test preparation techniques, and each subsequent 1-hour webinar focuses on a single topic typically found in Level 1 and Level 2 exams. Each session will include sample questions and a short Q and A period. This series can benefit new operators aiming for Level 1 and 2 certifications, as well as currently certified operators looking to pass higher-level tests.
This session introduces the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment. We cover process components and operations, basic microbiology, safety issues, process controls, collection system variables, primary control points and basic maintenance.

Thank you for publishing this on You Tube! As a resident volunteer about to start learning to help with the plant in a VERY tiny short staffed town. This is very valuable! Guess I'll have to stop referring to our Combo Oxidation Ditch as "The Lazy River" now?
@Environmental Finance Center Network will part 2 be posted? This is great material thanks for sharing!
Hi @bennyp4112, unfortunately, there was a recording error with part 2. However, you can download a copy of the slides from the event page: efcnetwork.org/event/webinar-operator-certification-activated-sludge-part-2/
When will part 2 come out?
For some reason this particular video “shakes” back and forth!! Something glitchy in the imbed that doesn’t agree with my Roku tv. Bizarre. If I watch it on my iPhone it’s fine, if I mirror iPhone to the tv or watch it on the tv natively it shakes back and forth! Audio is fine!!! How strange.
BOD is Biochemical oxygen demand not biological oxygen demand just a heads up
Good catch
Biochemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand are the same thing. Over time, industry has coined two different terms for the same thing. Where I'm from, we have always referred to BOD as biological oxygen demand but it's fine to call it biochemical oxygen demand as people in the industry should know what you are referring to.
