She "reinvented" it according to canon but it doesn't diminish the accomplishment in the slightest which was only achieved by an avatar (Kyoshi) before and her basically immortal master! Toph is too good, I hope they animate her fight vs bumi in the next movie!
By far, one of my favourite episodes. The way how the chakra's are explained, the themes of healing, love, mourning, and so on. Then the transition into Toph her metalbending. Absolutely beautiful. ❤
Toph does actually INVENT metal bending in this very scene ^^ You know how there are subcategories for the different bending styles? Ice, sand, lightning, etc, yeah, Toph just created a new one :D
I wonder what happened with Pathik? He said he was good friends with Gyatso and not only was Gyatso only alive 100 years prior but "good friends" implies him knowing Gyatso for a while, meaning he's probably around the same as Gyatso when he died and, thus, close to 200 years old by the time Aang meets him. Dude seemed like he was still going strong. If he lived nearly two centuries already, I wonder if he lasted even into Legend of Korra...
@@Mrryn People tend to live a very long time in the Avatar world, so perhaps! By the time of Korra there are "air acolytes" trying to keep airbender culture alive, and I imagine that Pathik was a key player in the creation of that organization.
This is one of my favorite episodes. Toph discovering metal bending still gives me goosebumps every time I re-watch it. Edit: Ange's theory on the chakras is interesting
Such a great episode! A few years back when I was an intense depressive state, my therapist recommended meditation. Then I randomly remembered this episode, and I started looking up more about chakras, and came to find that so many things are accurate in the show! From the color representation to the themes and the hand gestures they do, it’s so cool! Doing those chakra opening meditations every sunset saved me in one of my darkest times, and I owe that in part to this episode ❤
It is so sad looking at Zuko, because you can tell that he's TRYING to be good, helpful and satisfied, but he hasn't fully addressed the underlying issues that made him full of angst and rage. So this is a vulnerable state. And the problem is that Iroh is too happy about how content he finally sees his nephew seemingly is, that he doesn't dare delve further into his issues anymore. He only sees the opportunity for peace. And honestly, if Azula didn't pull her shenanigans, maybe Zuko COULD'VE gotten over the problems slowly and delicately in this environment...and maybe *cough* ended up with Jin *cough* *cough* Yeah, still a tiny bit sad about how that was left hanging. But Destiny calls.
I see it a bit differently. I don't think he's "trying" to be good here, it's coming naturally now that he's legitimately refreshed from not having to live up to his father, worrying about his honor, the throne and the whole mess of a royal family, dropping a burden after carrying it for so long must feel great. But I do think he's only looking forward because he thinks that old road is closed off, he essentially gave up looking for Aang, and he has no more leads, he's no longer moving around, with no viable path to return to being Fire Prince Zuko, he's decided to just make the most of what he has. There are obviously unaddressed issues, but I don't think they're stopping him from being legitimately positive in the moment, more they would be things that would start cropping up over time if left in this environment and would have to be dealt with as they crop back up.
i say this on every reaction channel once they get here because it's a moment in my life i'll never forget but when i was up in NYC back in 2018-2020 for acting, one of my teachers had us going over chakras as a way to release ourselves and open ourselves up to receiving energy so when we were in a scene, we'd be able to act naturally while still maintaining the character we were portraying and for an hour, he had us lying on our backs going over the chakras, which actually surprisingly are real to how ATLA explains them so when he started talking about them i immediately thought of this episode only to then realize he was actually quoting the guru and at the end of the class he said "congratulations, you are now the avatar" haha still a moment i will carry with me forever. He was one of my favorite teachers to this day
There are so many awe inducing moments in this show as well as Legend of Korra, but one of my personal favorites is Guru Pathik discussing the four elements with Aang while Toph literally invents metal bending. I get goosebumps every time.
The bit where the Guru talks about how love does not leave the world, and is reborn as new love, that’s stuck with me and informed my approach to life for years.
It seems like Ange appreciated how Toph inventing metal bending is handled in terms of the writing as much as I did. It's not just the hype of Toph being Toph, it's the whole package: the lead up to it, the guru explaining the illusion in the background, the transition, everything. Top 3 Atla scenes for me, easily.
Letting go of attachments doesn't mean you have to stop loving and caring. It means you have to accept that its temporary. Whether its through old age, car accident, or breakup. Yoda said the same thing in star wars. "You must let go of everything you fear to lose. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not." Its Buddhist philosophy.
Mine are 1. Azula 2. Katara 3. Toph With time I've learned to appreciate Katara more and more, before I'd rank her below the more badass characters (even though she becomes just as competent as them through the course of the series) now I have her about equal to Azula or close enough. Sokka is fourth and Iroh fifth. I love Iroh but he's already gone through his character arc by the time the show happen, and we never really delve into him reckoning with his past actions. The man besieged Ba Sing Se for 2 years as the second most powerful leader in the entire Fire Nation, that's insane, a siege of that magnitude probably killed tens of thousands of people, but now he's a changed man, probably the most balanced and spiritual man in the show. He'd be higher if we'd explore that change a bit more in depth that "he lost his son and that changed his outlook on life". Not that I'm saying the show needed to explore his past, it can't go into details for all the characters after all, I'm just explaining why he's only my fifth. Toph is also a pretty static character but not completely static, her handling of group dynamics and the way she serves as a foil to other characters is just great. Plus her awesomeness is just off the charts.
Jook, or Congee as it is called some places, is a boiled rice dish with veggies, meat and such. It is like oatmeal in consistency [jook tends to be made thinner than oatmeal but it can be thicker] but it is savory. Personally, I like it - though I go for a slightly thicker kind.

He did direct a handful episodes in Book 1, and his episodes are among the best in that Book, like 'Jet,' 'The Blue Spirit,' an the season 1 finale 'The Siege of the North.'
