  • SLOW TV - Today we go a bit Brian Eno and bring you 10 minutes of pure sailing. An ambient look at Luckyfish sailing last week, in ideal conditions off the Exuma chain of islands in the Bahamas. Viewer Jim Thoreson suggested we do this for those of you who plan on getting a Wharram Tiki 38 someday... it's a chance to see what the view from the helm is like. Well, the helm normally resides in Romeo or Juliet's hands, our two wind vane self steering units. This was recorded while Juliet steered us with great accuracy on a broad reach in 17 to 23 knot winds, one reef in the mainsail, one reef in the foresail and full jib. There was little for us to do except alter the vane slightly from time to time to maintain our heading as the wind direction gradually shifted... and enjoy the ride. We hope you enjoy it too!

+marty jouett - you get it. She is "working" her way along. Finding the easiest path through the waves. The V-hulls, canoe sterns and overhangs, traditional and dated to many, sure give a kindly motion. Thanks so much for commenting.

    Yay! Lucky Fish is back!
Hi Stewart and Zaya. The video, showing you guys and your wonderful vessel back at sea, made my day. All the
more gratifying given the close call that Lucky Fish had with hurricane Irma.
Everything I know about sailing/cruising I learned from your channel and the other like channels that I subscribe to.
However, as I think I've said, yours is unique in numerous ways. The video clip, uninterrupted and without any
musical score, is one more. I don't think any of the other channels that I follow has done anything quite like that.
The title of one of your previous releases "Life At Sea is Better," says it so well. The video makes me understand even
better what it is that makes being at sea so irreplaceable to many. The sound of the water and wind, the way the boat
moves and they way that its hulls bite the waves, the vivid colors of the sky and water and clouds, look as if it has a soul
all its own. And to have it all to yourselves, more or less! It was sublime.
Thanks much for this. I can't wait to see the next chapters in your saga!

    • @SailingLuckyfish

Thanks for that comment Terry, great to hear the vids resonate and bring some of the sense of freedom this lifestyle brings. You do sum it up very well ! Its really why sailors cant ever stop - no feeling comes close to being tied to nature every minute through the boat. Such a contrast to being separated from nature in our lives where we end up chasing that feeling up blind alleys. Cheers to you from Stew and Zaya

Thanks for your quick response Stew. I have watched 74 episodes of Luckyfish over the years and remembered the phrase ‘Does size matter.’ But two videos have been deleted, Episode 62 and 65. I have located a copy of Ep. 65. Is ‘Does size matter?’ Ep. 62? You Tube simply states ‘Private video’. I watch Luckyfish for relaxation, fantasising about sailing the seven seas with a crew beautiful scantily clad women.
Your Warram reminds me of a GP (Jeep) for the ocean. The brand name comes from the acronym GP meaning General Purpose Vehicle. I cannot imagine a more versatile vessel. An ocean worthy sailer with such a shallow draft. Being small makes the boat easier to handle with a small crew, and cheaper to buy and maintain. My daughter sails in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. She has to deal with a yacht heeling up to 25 ⁰. It is constant work exposed to the elements. I think the draft is about 16’ or 5 meters.
I prefer the Warram with it’s stable spacious platform and open cockpit that can be enclosed to provide a lot of protection in inclement weather.
I’m an Australian living in Thailand and realise that Wok cooking produces a meal in under 5 minutes. A European style casserole takes at least 20 minutes, a roast an hour or more. So I would fit a single gas burner on deck to take a wok. With a splash of oil a wok doubles as a hot plate for a Bar-be-que. An electric Rice cooker is no work cooking of least fattening and most healthy carbohydrate. One can cook Naan bread on a single burner too. Asia uses woks because they use the least fuel per cooked meal, important on a boat at sea.
I have sailed small monohull yachts and was surprise to find small catamarans difficult to tack, similar to getting caught in stays. Maybe you might teach us how you use each sail, the sequence of setting them and how you trim them. I have watched sailors bring their boats into port and dock them without using engines. Only when one tries sailing totally without engines, does the degree of skill required to sail a boat become become apparent. Despite watching your videos I would not be able to sail your Warram, especially across oceans. You still have much to teach us. We are looking forward to it. Maybe something to do while waiting for the baby to arrive. Will you sail the Pacific to New Zealand, Australia and the Barrier Reef? How many islands between Sydney Australia, and Queensland, through Indonesia the Philippines or Vietnam to Japan? You could easily spend a year island hopping up the East Coast of Australia. When baby starts to crawl you may have to become a day sailer for a while. Somewhere like Sydney Harbour or Monaco to Cannes. So much to see on the water in busy harbours.

Good to see you back. She really gets along well, very impressive.
What is the worst conditions you have been in and how did Luckyfish, and crew handle it?

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 лет назад +4

Boat handles heavy weather very comfortably. Worst experience we have had is a square faced wave hitting us beam on at 2 in the morning in the Gulf of Mexico. A freak occurrence as we were comfortably beam reaching at 7 to 8kts and doing well. Boat heeled up on her beam ends throwing the two of us across the pod. Zaya thought we were going over as we heeled, and I didnt get any time to think at all, just hit the gaff halyard and dropped the main, licked our wounds and carried on. That is why we love the safety margin built into our low aspect rig. If we were pressing another design hard in those conditions the outcome may have been different. We have weathered more sustained high winds on passages, confused seas and so on, all the time the boat feels very safe. Having a great sense of security on board is one thing that makes sailing the boat such a pleasure. Cheers, Stew

I'm new to this channel, and enjoying it, as the minimalist approach with the serviceable practicality that we enjoyed being able to take care of ourselves, before mass production sold us on specific manufactured replacement parts for everything, which have really run amok. How's she sail in a squall? Nobody gets seasick or do you all keep your left ear plugged at times?

    • @SailingLuckyfish

+Robin - Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. She sails just fine in squalls - we go through a few in this Fridays video. Great collection of stories from Wharram's in severe weather here: bit.ly/2oo6eye Re: the seasickness - it has not really been an issue with us. Tuya was a bit queezy for a day leaving Namibia but aside from that, no-one has been seasick. Glad to have you on board, Stew and Zaya

Go Brian Eno on us anytime!
"On our schooner," Stew said as he grinned
"The Main & the Mizzen are twinned."
    "It's a versatile rig"
"Where no sail is too big"
"For a crew oft' three sheets to the wind."
BTW: Don't know if you have any control over how or what type of ads are displayed
but in the middle of your beautiful vid--the mellow was harshed by a *loud* ad :(
Maybe (just for the Eno-esque vids) you can specify visual ads?

Hi Stew, Zaya. Found your channel just last week and enjoyed watching your adventures from Ep.1. Which has kindled my interest in Wharram designs. I've known about them for 40 years since my neighbour built one in Cairns when I was a teenager but I confess I'd put them in the "oddity"basket - why would I want to build a double hulled Polynesian canoe.... However watching your travels and seeing the boat in action and you guys living aboard has made me reconsider from a number of perspectives and I can see now why they are so popular both from a construction point of view (I have built a small boat - yes, what am I thinking!) and from a sailing point of view. My main reservation is I now live in Auckland (25 years Stew - almost a kiwi : ) and this as you know is not the Bahamas when it comes to climate and I wonder weather a Wharram offers enough shelter from the elements. When you cruise for more than a few days you don't get to choose your weather and I'm not planning on sailing to tropical climes - beautiful one day , perfect the next. Bay of Islands will probably be my distant shore. Thoughts?? Anyway "where" to build a10 - 12 meter cat is the big one at the moment.... Great to see you guys back on the water and Luckyfish straining at the leash. Happy sailing!

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 лет назад

Hi Robin, I too was aware of Wharram designs for 40 years or so and placed them in the same basket :-). It wasn't until reading more and more about the design philosophy and seeing how much it tied into my own conclusions after many years of travelling and sailing that I realised that these misgivings were misplaced. A function of listening to the so called experts and mass marketing media didn't help. A lot of it is smoke, with a different agenda altogether. So that is why we started the channel, to do our bit to give the boat a voice. So it is great to hear that you are having a re-think too. Before getting Lf we considered buying a Tiki 38 in the Bay of Islands but the boat sold quickly. The owner lived on board, bought a mono for more space then regretted parting with his simple Wharram! One issue he had with the Wharram was the lack of insulation in the hulls - winters can be cool there and condensation inside the hulls was an issue. Many ppl do live on them in temperate climates like that - and have a small heater inside and/or insulate the hulls. If you had one for summertime sails out on the Hauraki Gulf and cruise up to Bay of Islands you would have it made ! Great part of the world. I raced and cruised that area in the 70's and 80's and miss the rock oysters and snapper! You could become a member of the Wharram Facebook Catamaran Group and you can tap into a ton of advice and info there. Good luck with the search, Cheers from Stew and Zaya
