  • An old Hollywood actress narrating her scandals? It should be a book I love...right?

I know this review is old, but I just finished Evelyn Hugo and I’m browsing reviews for people who weren’t as enamored as I was.
I think the telling not showing was a big one for me. I personally had issues with her true love as I never felt that relationship. We’re told they are in love, but never really shown it.

I agree! It's a huge problem when you don't really buy any of the relationships in the book, but especially the main one that's supposed to be driving everything.

I know this comment is so late to the game but....THANK YOOOOOOU for being one of the only people to be unimpressed by this book. I was so disappointed by it! I've been looking for ANYONE else to share this opinion. It was so underdeveloped and all the characters were completely generic and hollow. It was rushed and seemed to rely on controversial identity struggles to piggyback the book to success because the actual writing and plot was weak. It's shocking that sooooo many people praise this book and gush over it!

No worries on the lateness, I think the comments for this video have become a safe space for people who weren't into the book. I'm glad other people enjoyed it because I think the premise is truly wonderful, but it was hard for me to finish. I've always wondered if maybe the audiobook is a better reading experience for the book.

Haha a safe place for those who didn't like it--here I am! And I read through audiobook and it was still bad. Honestly, I wondered if I may have been more forgiving reading the print version, because hearing the dialogue out loud really dialed up the cheese. 😬

I just finished this book a few days ago. You said everything I felt. One of my complaints of the writing was the detailed descriptions of clothing that was unnecessary. Like we just have to know what a character was wearing just because. As if the clothing choice would affect the story, but it doesn't. For example like the description of Monique's clothes at home. It wasn't even her changing into a more comfortable outfit but 'I wore *inserts items*' and that was it. It was quite jarring for me to randomly know about clothing choices. When it was at Evelyn's movie premiere, of course descriptions of gowns would be perfect because it connects to the fame and the glamor being told.

Great review. I searched far and wide for anyone willing to point out the lackluster writing in this book. Evelyn is great, but there are so many poorly written characters surrounding her, and on top of that, the sentence structure and word choice was just really not working for me. Inelegant is exactly the word I would have chosen to describe it.

Thank you! I know other people love this book, and I never want to take away from that, but I do appreciate finding other people who had the same reaction as me :-)

I didn't enjoy the novel because of what you said and the ending. You explained in a very calm and intelligent way.

I know this is old but just finished it and am shocked how popular it is, I was so underwhelmed.

I agree, the writing wasn't enjoyable, and Evelyn's character was probably the only reason why people like it

I really while how you expressed your opinion about the book. I really loved it and to be honest didnt find the things you saw as a problem something that would be bothered by them but now that youve mentioned them, I would have to day that I actually to agree with you. Some things about the book couldve been better, yes but still the book was written well enough to be both enjoyable and empowering. Great review :)

I agree completely. The trend is continued in her following book, making your comment about narrative sameness even more valid. I felt it wasn't as grating in this novel, although it certainly was noticeable, but by the time i finished Daisy Jones and the Six, it was truly ironic (meaning that in a book centered on the viewpoint of 6 different people, all with different recollections of the same events, it is a bit funny that all of them ultimately sound the same).

There were so many clunky sentences in the book that I tended to read them, read them out loud in disgust, nearly give up, and then shoulder on. 3 out of 5 stars. Show, don't tell, Ms. Reid! Excellent review.

I love stories about glamourous women too. have you watched Poor Little Rich Girl with Farrah Fawcett? it's a TV mini-series about Barbara Hutton. last I checked it was still on RUclips.

"Crashing in like the Scooby gang" is just great! Quote of the week! Your review is great. I've been trying to decide if this was really going to be a book I wanted to read. It wasn't on my TBR, but it was on my radar. I have to wonder how predictable the reason Evelyn chose her is...

Haha thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed that. I will say that the reason wasn't something I predicted..but I also wasn't really trying to figure it out too much as I was reading (though that might be more about my own apathy).

Great review, intelligent and thoughtful. Totally agree with you, wish I'd DNF'd it instead of persisting.

Fantastic review! I also hate when authors don't trust the reader to come to conclusions together. I still might pick this up

Thanks! Sometimes when I get frustrated with a popular book, I get like petty and aggravated when I see more people picking it up..but either I'm maturing (doubtful) or this book is really compelling because I don't think I'll be upset if this ends up on everyone else's favorites list.
