Lyrics: 100% depression
Instrumentals: 100% happiness
Question: is this album cover the inside of the house on the first album cover?
yes!
awesome.
This makes me so happy and sad at the same time.
Matt G I asked my self the same. It would be so symbolic... and cool
Moments of excitement in the past ten years: 1) The Force Awakens 2) new American Football
Wow, I didn't know you liked this stuff as well?!?!? AWESOME!!! I love your channel as well. Good stuff good stuff.
Haha I saw this guy wearing an American Football shirt in one of his videos and made a comment there. Anyways yeah neat to see him here as yeah I like the Star Wars though I never got too obsessive about it, good times.
I remember watching your videos a long time ago and realized you had one of American Football's song playing in the background. So it was a trip to see your comment about their new song.
"I've Been So Lost For So Long"
I've been so lost for so long
Every street's a dead end
Every sign points behind me
If you need me, don't
You can't trust a man who can't find his way home
My impaired intuition is telling me just to give in
If you find me
Could you please remind me
Why I woke up today
I feel so sick
Doctor, it hurts when I exist
This isn't the pain I'm usually in
I hope it's not contagious
Maybe I'm asleep and this is all a dream
I can't believe my life is happening to me
If you find me
Could you please remind me
Why I should wake up tomorrow
This is me reaching out to you publicly
So what else is new?
Maybe I'm asleep and this is all a dream
Doctor, it hurts when I exist = mood
I always thought it was
"This is me reaching out to me. Publicly or in someone else's dream".
And some how those lyrics resonate with me so much more.
let's all wait another 17 years to realize this was actually good
"Maybe I'm asleep, this is all a dream
I can't believe my life is happening to me."
Ooooovverllly
Draamaaaattiiiicc
lol
I think that's the point lmao this is emo music what do you expect
you missed the reference so hard
ok calm down no tears please
okay yeah I did fukc in my defense I was stoned off my ass when I wrote that comment
Damn. This is their song that hits me the hardest yet
i need another 17 years to understand this song.
Hows progress
Only 11 more left
10 left
2023 how's it going
9 left
doctor, it hurts
damn weird seeing you out in the wild. love your channel!
After 17 years... They really haven't lost much sound. Vocals are more mature but that's not a bad thing. I instantly thought of 'Honestly'. Can't wait
Big THX to the tumblr kool kids, twinkle daddies, stayhomeclub, and Starbucks playlist for playing Never Meant.
Because of y'all the masses are wising up that American Football was/is a fantastic band. And I'm thankful that of my longtime favorite bands get to continue on after so many years w/ festival runs & new songs like these.
Blessed.
Yeah and hopefully they will do a regular tour across the states and hit up smaller places.
+creekandseminole Word.
Its September...that time of the year we pull out the album and cry to The Summer Ends...but this year is different. for the first time in 17 we have a new song to listen to. and it fits so well in this moment. Viva la American Football
RIP Dylan Johnson
I wish you got to hear more of this
"I can't believe my life is happening to me"
fuck
Why does this sound like this would fit into a car commercial or a shitty teen romance movie?
I definitely see it in a indie romance flick
You mean you couldn't see Never Meant in a shitty teen romance movie? Hell. I'd love to direct that movie just for the honor of having that song in my movie.
They even did a shitty teen romance video for it!
***** Absolutely and I love every second of it because it takes me back to high school but it was still a shitty teen romance video.Does that make sense?
"you can't trust a man who can't find his way home". Gorgeous lyrics from emo sad dad.
I've listened to this song countless times (It's actually one of my favorites lol) and the 'I feel so sick' part gets me and stops me dead in my tracks every damn time I hear it
Something about the delivery of the line and that extra guitar track just adds something indescribable to it.
im already crying fuck
you know that feeling you get from seeing an old friend for the first time in a long time? yeah, that's how it felt to listen to this song. very excited for this record.
love the guitar, But I feel like the rock like drum sound isn't as good as the old jazz sounding drums. Plus I personally think that the vocals make it sound like country music at times lol. But Still Beautiful Song :)
Autumn night I agree kinda disappoints me but I will try to enjoy it anyway.
Nothing about the album disappoints me... Matured voices, calmer sound, just sounds so beautiful like this is what their sound has been missing. I'm so proud of where they have came, the only disappointment I have are for the other fans. As if they expected anything brighter, they're obviously not going to have the same sound after 17 years, this is perfect. I love you guys. Come to Missouri!
Great song.
Needs more tambourine and melancholy trumpet.
Tru
just wait and see
you must be 'the one with the tambourine', or maybe 'the one with the wurlitzer' ;)
Michael Torrez c'mon they just can't re-do what they have done. 20 years have passed by
Let's get an American Football, Braid, and Boys Life tour please. All three bands have reunited and It'd be so sick to see them all. Departures and Landfalls by Boys Life is one of the great 90's emo records of all time.
I can't like this comment any more than I have!
Hey, I "liked" it too.
split braid/hey mercedes set plz
SDRE, MINERAL, AMERICAN FOOTBALL
American Football / Braid / Christie Front Drive / Knapsack. That would be a huge tour ever!
"doctor it hurts when I exist" damn dude.
Absolutely fantastic! 🙏😊
American Football is one of the bands I love the most. Their eponymus debut album has changed -and saved- my life.
I still remember when I first listened to "Honestly?", It was so fucking shocking to me! And all those beautiful tracks such as "The Boy With The Tambourine", "Letters & Packages", "Never Meant", "For Sure".... Do you know what I mean?
After checking this out.... damn it! I can't help feeling kind of disappointed. It is good, but it lacks of the American Football vibe that blown my mind. It is more oriented to Owen stuff (which I like as well, but in a different way).
Still I hope I see them live at least for once in my lifetime.
well, we'll see for the rest of the album. but the amount of hype they're getting for this album will just make it terrible. too much buildup leads to disappointment. and obv they can't recreate something from 20 years ago
"give me the gun" is very good and better than this track, imho.
Looks like the vocals will be mixed in this Owen esque way. Not really a fan. The two instrumentals are amazing so far, but really hate the vocal delivery and mix, especially Give Me the Gun's vocals. Ruins the amazing instrumentation.
Yeah. But I mean not only the vocals, the overall production is really bad.
I love this band so much. Kinda sad that I'll never watch them live...
I can hear the influence this band has on modern bands like Movements and citizen. This is exactly the type of music I’ve been listening to for months now
Unpopular opinion probably: These guys didn't need to release a new album. That being said solid track.
I don't think they felt they needed to, they just wanted to do it
Glad they did
I get where you're coming from, but I don't think that it takes away from the fact that they released a legendary album almost 2 decades ago.
I love this song but it reminds me too much of Owen and not enough of American football. Still looking forward to the rest of the album though. Im glad they reunited
Yea. A lot more emphasis on Mike's voice. I mean... I want this album to be AF album 2 not Owens 7th album.
Well Mike was 19 when he sang on the first AF album back in 1999. So obviously he's going to sound more like his recent stuff on Owen than he did back in the day.
+Noah N Yeah your right. idk I just want this new AF album to be worth it. The song is good but it's no but the regrets are killing me.
Not to mention that American Football was originally only Mike, so it was essentially Owen. I like it. Can't lose with the Kinsellas.
It wasn't only Mike in AF. There was Steve Holmes on guitar and Steve lamos on drums.
Was about to go out to the club with the boys. Now i'm on my porch thinking about my life....
The feels are real
Honestly folks, I can't remember all my teenage feelings. FOLKS.
おかえりなさい
FUCK right when I just got emotionally stable again!
I was expecting something far less here. Wow very good.
Why were you expecting something less
Cause it's their first song in 15 years, probably
BigElephant Meh that's fine. MBV gave me hope that a band could still do good after that long break. Huge breaks are actually a good thing in my opinion.. just not that long of course.
MBV?
Rushingdash Yeah
"maybe im asleep and this is all a dream... i cant believe my life is happening to me" ------- wow
People tear into bands that cover subject matter they deem inappropriate for their age, but as someone who was way late to the show I really appreciate it. I don't have to wait 17 years for a second album, and I get to experience AF blurry-eyed at the bottom of a fifth of liquor in the prime of my early 20s.
No sé qué pensar aún.
A no decepcionarse!
Play Hallelujah Junction: 1st Movement for 1 second then let this play with it. It's beautiful
This is so different than the first album, but it's such a good song that I don;t even care.
Vocals are too loud in the mix
right?
+Jackson Willette maybe because their last and only record you can barely hear vocals :P
drums too
Nah, you're just used to the vocals sounding like they're far away. Lol. You'll get used to it.
I think they sound real good
Goddammit, guys, get your text formatting game together
I've started going back to my emo self it has never lefted. Also this band is absolutely awesome 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I've been so lost for so long
Every street's a dead end

You can't trust a man
Who can't find his way home

And I exist
I hope it's not contagious

I can't believe
Life is happening to me
If you find me
Would you please remind me
Why I should wake up tomorrow
This is me
Reaching out to you

So, what else is new?

If you find me, would you please remind me why I woke up today? I feel so sick, Doctor, it hurts when I exist. This is the pain that usually ends, I hope it's not contagious.

Sums up the failure to launch generation
No kidding...
Haha, so insightful, blame the millennial generation for the downfalls of corporate capitalism.
Thomas Bryne I didn't blame anybody for anything
duhh nangis :((( ....
am i childish or what, and why everyone relating this to your teenager years, i mean im old enough and this song still hits me like a truck.
IT'S HAPPENING
Yes it is
Lyrics:

I recently got into American Football in the last 4 months or so and I think their self titled is a masterpiece from start to finish and imo this dosnt sound as good as that but I'm still really looking forward to listing to this album plus it's being released on my birthday so that's a pretty good present lol
I would need a second heart to handle all these feels.
The lyrics are good, the vocals are totally more in the forefront, though. One of the reasons it was so believable from a depressed standpoint was because the vocals were almost a whisper. Sometimes I speak like that when I'm sad. The drumline is totally out of place. I feel like it's so upbeat. The tempo, too. One of the coolest things about the old album was the math rock repetitive guitar progressions. Every once in a while I'd listen in on the background and hear the second guitar doing something spaced out, and it was great! It wasn't always on tempo, or crisp, but I liked how it wasn't confident. It went with the subject matter, and built a story and a feeling around the lyrics. This just feels..... hollow.
vocals are way too fuckin' loud, this is just another Owen album that we didn't want to hear
Lower vol on vox n drum. Pretty good though
What if we kissed in the American football house? 😳😳😳
no... unless?
Listened to about 10 seconds just to be sure and then immediately pre-ordered
GAT GAT GAT, YALL KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IT ISSSSSSSSSS
This is just an Owen song with twinklier guitars
Disagree! Arrangement sounds distinctly American Football to me. I love it.
All Owen songs are really just American Football songs in an alternative universe. Same sensibility, different instrumentation.
+Lawliet Jayson Owen to me is the continuation of American Football if we were to put it into context of a person living his life. Listen to Never Meant and then the cover of Never Meant by Owen and it's like reminiscing on the past. Pretty smart.
I don't agree with you on this one. Saying that is reducing AF to Mike, and I like the original AF album because it's Kinsella sensibility mixed with Lamos musical drumming and Holmes twinkly riffs.
And more interesting time signatures and tunings.
(Tried to get the lyrics. If I get some word wrong, feel free to correct me.)

Thank youu👌🏻👌🏻
So what else is new* in that last verse
I fucking love it. their first album has been the soundtrack to my life for so long. thank god. and new owen. and new bon iver next month. it's gearing up to be an epic winter of great music
This means a fucking lot to me.
Something this beautiful is not meant for this world...
i think the knack for musicianship is advancing to a certain caliber, not that it's always been impressive. Kinsella's voice fitted his straightforward writing style in the first album, i'm not too intrigued by what he has to offer vocally in this song alone. I'm hoping to see more good out of the album itself
Hayley Williams is listening to this song now.
If American football is reading this, did she hear your public plea? You did ask in the song
honestly this is so true to American footballs sound. sure mikes voice sound more on the Owen side but that's just his developed voice. the American football stuff was recorded before he fully matured his voice.
the only thing that would make this even more American football would be some melancholy trumpet.
habrá que escuchar owen para comparar o q
Stephen put down the tele and got a jazzmaster, i can't say im fond of that
sounds more Owen than AF
i hope they just call this album "american football" yknow
It is self titled
yeah its self titled. just considered "lp2"
Are people actually complaining about this? It's NEW American Football! ENJOY IT!
Kakashi I want to but I can't hear the instruments- terrible production
I dont get why there are so many negative comments about this album, it sounds great to me!
iam here because of hayley williams tweet
C'è ancora speranza in me.
il problema é che il primo album é inquadrato in un periodo totalmente diverso dal nostro, per questo suona "più moderno". ma d'altro canto non possiamo aspettarci che il sound resti dopo quasi 20 anni lo stesso :/
HOLY FUCK
Yeah I suppose this sounds more like Owen stuff, but at the same time just recording and all of that jazz has changed a lot since the frigging 1990s or even pre social media revolution. It does still have some American Football vibes though and that's good.
17 years I've waited...
hello, the song is beautifull, are you planning a south american tour?
if you come here to argentina it will be also a great dream come true for us!
This is a good track! Nothing like Never Meant, but definitely better than Silhouettes. I really enjoy it, but the vocals are off
Is it just me or does this sound a lot different from their first LP? Their first LP was more math rock-ish and had and was a bit more melancholy and the vocals were more indie/emo and this just sounds completely different I just can't exactly explain why it sounds different. It kind of sounds more like pop or something Avicci would make i'm not sure what it is. Is it just me?
The mix and the vocals are pop oriented (I like the song though). Mike's musical influences have also changed in times. He was way more into alternative indie music back in the days
+Théophile Richart Ahh I see well I hope the rest of the songs on their new LP are more indie/alternative since i'm not really a fan of modern mainstrean music which is what this sounds like. I can only hope though
drop the kick snare kick snare and you have a good song
The important thing is the house has made its return.
I've been so lost for so long
Every street's a dead end
Every sign points behind me
If you need me, don't
You can't trust a man
Who can't find his way home
My impaired intuition

And I exist

And this is all a dream
I can't believe
Life is happening to me
If you find me
Would you please remind me
Why I should wake up tomorrow
This is me
Reaching out to you
Publicly
So, what else is new?
Maybe I'm asleep
And this is all a dream
I can’t believe my life is happening to me
sounds like christian rock localised for secularized groups of the general population.
The music is exactly what I want from an American Football album, but I think the vocals are just a little too far in the forefront. There was almost a sound of defeat that came from the quietness of the vocals on the first album that was really endearing and heartfelt.
This isn't "cultural marxism," right? It's too beautiful, and too American to be considered as such.
Do you guys realize how deep the lyrics are
The delivery is definitely deep, but the lyrics inherently by themselves are just standard depression.
deep af
So far so good. Heard rumblings of new material for awhile now. I'm gonna approach this new lp with a bit more care. It took years for the first album to turn into a classic for me.
I disliked the the first lp first few rounds I heard it. But after some growing up and personal experiences it clicked for me. It was the soundtrack 17 year old me needed at the time, approaching adulthood. My this can be the next soundtrack to the next chapter of my life
Is it me or has the singer changed the way he's singing since the first album. I always thought he sounded different when he was doing the Owen albums.
well he was in his 20s when recording the first LP and now hes 40. voices change.
It's definitely just age. He was 21 or 22 when they recorded the self-titled and he's 39 now. If you listen to every single Owen album in chronological order you basically get to hear the changes his voice has made throughout his 20s and 30s.
Just when you thought you'd escaped the throes of teenage angst. Thanks a lot, Kinsella!
For real though, I really like this single - even if it sounds more like Owen than AF. It's like seeing an old friend for the first time in years, as one commenter put it; it's different but the same.
Took me til i was 24 to find this song at such a perfect time in my life breaking free into adulthood a little late but eh late bloomers are welcome too?
UNA GIOIA
Algum BR?
The drums are too loud in the mix, but the rest is good!
the kick drum right xd
Oh lord, am i ever ready for this fucking album.
[Verse 1]
I’ve been so lost for so long
Every street’s a dead end
Every sign points behind me
If you need me, don’t
You can’t trust a man who can’t find his way home
My impaired intuition is telling me just to give in
[Chorus 1]
If you find me
Could you please remind me
Why I woke up today?
[Verse 2]
I feel so sick
Doctor, it hurts when I exist
This isn’t the pain I’m usually in
I hope it’s not contagious
[Bridge]
Maybe I’m asleep and this is all a dream
I can’t believe my life is happening to me
[Chorus 2]
If you find me
Could you please remind me
Why I should wake up tomorrow?
[Outro]
This is me reaching out to you publicly
So what else is new?
Maybe I’m asleep and this is all a dream
