When I was a kid (30+ years ago) my sister and I used fishing poles to fly our kites. worked great. You can back-reel to let more line out instead of opening the bail.
I flew pole kite in Walmart parking lot two weeks ago. YES FRICKIN'AWESOME!!!!

This happens when seagulls steal your baited hooks. The flock of seagulls tends to not come back for a few hours when they see their buddy getting manhandled after being pulled from the sky by an invisible force.

Hey Lou how about you use a spinning reel but don't open the bail BUT take off the anti reverse and just back reel to let out the kite or reel it in. ( you might have to open the bail to get it started )
I bet you could of used your drag instead of flipping the bail over

Bait caster I would not use a spinning reel at all way to hard opening the bail with kids forsure I use a ice fishing rod with a Abu Garcia Bait caster kinda expensive to fly a kite but hey its for the kids and kids having fun is priceless my 4 year old loves it
When I was a kid I did the same thing for seaguls fishing rod and a bread ball the seagull swollen it hole then start the fight lol
Within ten minutes the line comes free from the bread in the seagulls belly and comes out rinse and repeat!! Lol I'm sure you can get in trouble so I donno about the birds stick to the kites people
