Great stuff, but what if the snow is firm or icy, and you can't push your skis into it.

Vivian, are you always skiing with toes locked? I did that for years and then blew my ACL a couple of years ago and now unlock them almost always. In super firm, no-fall terrain I still lock them.
I am not Vivian, but interesting to notice that he is using very minimalistic race-type bindings in the last years on all his skis.
Many of us do.
