I wish that more men's suits had brocade patterns on them now! What's a true shocker is that once upon a time men had useless pockets.
Oh, oh ma'am... I love the regal nature of you two. But.. Specially how your hubby is having fun in this one . Love the whole outfit too.
The higher the hair, the closer to god.
I love how when the wife does the clothes she makes it look all pretty and elegant but when her husband does it, it looks like he's showing off. "Suave! Handsome! Hello ladies!"
:changes wigs: "Because he's worth it..." Loreal in the Restoration Era
Lol “ because he’s worth it”
Wonderful! He looks like Brian May from Queen in that wig!
Brian's hair IS one of the wonders of the world.
“What is it? This wig not big enough? Cue THE big wig!”
Did a gentleman of his status dress himself? I expected to see a servant assisting him. Still, a very enjoyable change to see a man's ensemble on this site.
Who else thinks men were way more better dressed back then?
Keeping in mind we're looking at clothing of the wealthy elite here, it certainly still feels like the range of textiles & accessories considered "appropriate" for male attire has shrunk drastically of recent decades! Even if you go back & look at what guys were wearing in the '60s-'70s, it was WAY more colourful & out there? 😆 I live in hope that as our social ideas about accepted gender stereotypes keep broadening, hopefully one day guys will once again have access to something more interesting...?
The ancient Egyptians wore long curly black wigs as well...Shaved their heads and wore wigs because of lice problems. .Amazing how the problems and solutions were the same over thousands of years.
I am honestly surprised the hat stays on over all that hair without hatpins 😂
How blessed you are to have found a man who shares your passion you both are so wonderful
I wasn’t looking . He found me I suppose
Is that where the term "bigwig" came from?
I was wondering about that too? Seems fitting.
It really is so much fun to see these videos in eras where the phrase "Do you think this is too much?" just doesn't seem to be common vocabulary. And still the look as a whole is elegant. Thank you for sharing!
We ladies should all have a cute guy to play dress up with! I love these videos showing how people dressed in the past- they're interesting! Thanks for doing them! 💖
2:00 The exaggerated swagger of a baroque lad
This is fabulous! :) That big-wig change at the end, of course, a must. One cannot, CANNOT, be seen in public with less than the best, biggest, curliest, longliest wig ... ;)
I’m curious when and why things such as lace, ruffles, floral patterns ribbons and bows became “feminine”?
Beau Brummell my dude. Changed men's fashion drastically in the direction of sober colors and simple lines. hespokestyle.com/beau-brummell-fashion/
Even for both sexes during 1700s, but moved to the feminine side during the 1800s
When things become cheaper or more easily available is when they become feminine. The more rare or expensive an item was to produce, the more likely it was part of men's fashion.
It's interesting that floral patterns and long hair came back in the '60s hippie styles, as a revolt against the suit, but only for young men.
Definitely should do more menswear videos
I would want to dress like this and walk into a Baroque orchestra
He's so cute and a good sport as well.
This is fabulous! Your workmanship and design aesthetic are superb and Lucas looks great! Thank you for posting!
Looks very much like a pirate. In a good way.
Ravishing! (as always, duh!)
Hubby needs to be featured in more videos with you!
Just WOW! Doesn't he cut a fine figure, a well dressed gentleman indeed!
WAIT I've just realised....that guy from pocahontas was wearing a WIG!!😯 (why have I just realised this now?)
Male fashion at that time was so cool. A shame that centuries later it was decided that male fashion had to be boring
And far less complicated--THANK GOD! All of those BUTTONS...those frilly cuffs Might as well wear a Depend under the pants...no way to get all of that off and the pants open quickly enough to piss.
@@weedermann Well, they managed somehow.
LOL...literally this is where male fashion evolved from and stopped. Its basically just a three piece suit.
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 how often do you see a three piece suit now? I'd say fashion has devolved into pretty much an undershirt, underwear and sandals now...
European fashion at this time was influenced largely by Italy and France, who prized opulence, loud colours, complex patterns and new combinations. England was the next up to influence fashion and they toned things down a lot in terms of colours and fit/silhouette. America has been the latest fashion influencer of the west and they've ruined everything with their obsession of all things casual, though they did strike a nice balance between masculine, feminine and casual in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. I personally think England did it best but I respect France's upper class for pushing the envelope and constantly innovating and experimenting.
Despite the extraness and opulence of the outfit, it's still more practical and elegant than anything these days
idk about practical haha
It's nice to know the men had quite a few layers to wear as well.
I can't help but wonder if hundreds of years from now, people will be making similar videos of "how to dress like a 2010's gentleman".
Is there such a thing? People today, dress whatever crappy way they want. In my neck of the woods anyway. Plus, it's not only, about the look but how you carry yourself as well, that make you a TRUE, lady or gentlemen.
My Best. Out.
Probably not if the woke mind virus manages to continue shifting culture the way it has. There might be far more unfortunate titles like "How to dress as a 2020's non-binary Streamer". Fashion is dying and we have to reference and embrace history to save it 👍
Youd haveta be macho to pull that off and I bet they were, dueling and sword fighting. But also romantic; serenading, writing poetry and drafting bridges and such.
See Baldassar Castiglione The Book of the Courtier on those subjects.
I could so comfortably wear that to work, a delightfuly distinguishedl gentleman.
Thy big hair doth make thy outfit
Thank you for making this! The ladies' clothing is always interesting to watch but we need more gentlemen out there too!
my name is... my name is... my name is cHarLes the SecOnD
Because he's worth it :D
It was a wonderful time for baldness
A sort of forerunner of the modern men's suit, which has changed amazingly little in the past couple of centuries... still, nice to see some men's fashions, and the restoration is one of my favorite eras of fashion :-) Somehow, despite the frills, this doesn't look feminine at all. Edited to add: oops, maybe I should wait to watch the whole video before I comment...
It's sad how we degenerated from frilly cravats, fashionable jackets and chemises to white shirts and skinny jeans...
I so wish skinny jeans would die...
How did they eat with those ruffly lace cuffs? How did they move them out of the way?
I was searching for this comment because I was wondering the same.
THE big wig ... fabulous!
It’s actually a very handsome look for a man
You can certainly see why people of means would have a valet!
This was the "sober" version? Literal fancypants!
The actual clothing is beautiful!
How did gentlemen keep their wigs on - especially when riding?
Ugh - imagine all the lice, cooties and bedbugs living in those wigs! While I’m nostalgic for the good ‘ole days I’d have trouble dealing with the ‘realities’ of life back then - even if I were rich!
IIRC, wigs were popular because of lice-- the wigs could be taken off and de-loused by boiling them.
kkoup35
There was a doco series, History’s Worst Jobs- a profession relating to wigs got a good mention in that.
i like this fashion.
This makes me think of Samuel Pepys and his diary 🪶
Excellent job! All that and then to brave the filth of city streets, the coal dust, the dirt: practical, not at all, but that wasn't the point, the point was status and social cred. Long before credit cards, these clothes would have got you more clothes, food, lodging, credit!
Please do more men's videos. There is not enough out there. 🖤
Puritan voice: big wigs are SINFUL!
This gentleman looks more like a Cavalier than a Roundhead to me.
@@ragnkja If you put a mustache on him, he could be portraying the Merry Monarch himself.
Those floofy cuffs would have driven me bonkers. Can you imagine how much food and muck they'd end up falling in?
The wig change cracked me up 😂😂😂
bring back ruffles and silk ribbobs for men omg he looks STUNNING!
To the manner born! Really enjoyed this insight into how men of that era got dressed.
With some minor changes in proportion, this look seems to carry through to the late 18th century, a hundred and thirty years later!
Great video! Did the men use anything to keep the wigs attached? Especially when riding/hunting or anything active? I guess they never kept their real hair?
Thank you, thank you. I'm writing a novel set I. 1662. I can't find much information on clothing of this era. This video is very useful, in fact I downloaded it for future reference. Thank you once again. I would like to see a video of a women's dressing. The wig came into fashion when CHARLES II wore one. He was going grey early. It wouldn't do to have a grey haired monarch on the throne!
Thank youA however you shouldn’t be able to download them at all, they are copyrighted - only pirate equipment would be able to rip the video off....
Bonnie Garrison try and find an old novel called Forever Amber by Kathleen Windsor, it’s a colourful tale of the times, considered ‘racy’ when published by quite safe for adults now!
I dont think thats really the case anyway. I'm pretty sure he just picked it up from the court of Louis XIV when he was in exile...
If the pockets were impractically low, did they use them? What “necessaries” did men carry in those days?
The second wig is significantly better! This restoration era kit looks truly fantastic.
I love this style for men!❤
Huzzah! More gentlemen’s videos, yes!
What a cool husband you have!!
Handsome gent.
I wonder who had the job of knitting those fine long socks. Must of taken weeks to complete. What a job.
oh yes, there will definitely be some ladies in love after todays walk through town 🥰
Thank you for real history and not imagined history.
Happy I'm not the only one who thinks this guy is dressed way better than men dress today
I LOVE the outfit! When he put on the BIG WIG, I thought of that movie I saw earlier this year called: THE MINIATURIST. Don't know why, but I like the 17th century clothes that men and women wore. Thanks for sharing this video! ~Janet in Canada
he is such a good egg to do this. you're one lucky lady.
Those large sleeve cuffs look like they'd become annoying/dirty very quickly! I suppose that was part of the point of them, to show you didn't need to do anything and could affor to keep them white
They probably had little bib covers for them, say if you were an account or draftsmen prone to smudges.
I love the hair!! Once the wig went on, it just completed the outfit. I initially had reservations about the look, but with the wig and the hat everything came together perfectly. (:
Rather wearable today, except for the sash & breeches! I wear a mix of 18th & 19th century clothing! Brocade is King!
He looks great!! Your work is beautiful. I have long curly hair just like that, so basically Restoration men are my hair-twins haha!!
I want such stockings 😭
those cuffs would drive me crazy
twirl time is one of my favorite times
This is similar to how I dress when I go out
What a dashing gentleman! This video was so entertaining!
A question about both wigs. Are they made from horsehair, longwool locks or synthetics?
No gentleman would be without his Smallsword
All of those buttons! But, why should women be the only ones with fiddly bits?
You make some of the coolest videos on RUclips! Thank you for teaching us so much about the past!
I think he was enjoying himself too much, playing dress-ups. Such a dashing gent. It was nice to see men"s clothing. :)
You look great with all these clothes and especially wig!
Just started watching a play in class today, and it’s costumed in basically this era-so cool coincidence to see what really ought to be there in this video!
This made me actually laugh out loud a few times! Great presentation, would give 100 likes if I could because you are worth it :))
this made you lol?
Well done again, These clothes are nice but complex
I think I sprained my finger clicking onto this video!!!!!! Absolutely stunning!! He's so in character!!!!
.....the accompanying comments are my absolute favourite!!!
It seems to be the early design of modern men's suits.
Because it is
Agghhhhh so many buttons!!!!😫😫😫😫
What a stunning outfit! Love the BIG wig he chose.
The hard part is once they got dressed , no matter what century, they probably had to pee ! so many layers back in the day!
Please do a gentleman from the Tudor era, please! (1550 or so?)
SOBER BREECHES! where's the fun in that?
So handsome! And that blue ensemble near the end was just gorgeous! 😍👌
Would love to see more vids like this and with some fancy high heels too. Just love the aesthetics!
Very handsome and authentic. The last still with lighting and backdrop is very painterly. I say chap, well done❣️
My favorite part is the hat!
