| Brazil struck gold at the 2021 FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League, coming back from a set down to beat rivals Poland in four 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-14) as the competition wound down on Sunday at Italy's Adriatic resort of Rimini.
A brilliant scoring performance by Wallace de Souza who bagged 22 points after attacking for 58% (18/31) and adding three blocks and an ace was key to Brazil's convincing win that boosts the confidence of the South Americans who next head out to defend their Olympic title at Tokyo.
Brazil overpowered Poland in both blocking (9-7) and serving (6-3), but in the end it was their attacking efficiency that made the difference: 52% (54/102) to 44% (44/101).
Poland made a break to turn a 5-6 deficit into an 8-6 advantage after a great dig by Kurek followed by a kill by Michal Kubiak plus an attack gone long by Lucas Saatkamp. Poland carried the lead into the second technical time out, but immediately after that back-to-back kills by Wallace de Souza brought Brazil level again.
But then Wilfredo Leon rotated to serve, sending a direct ace on libero Thales Hoss, and Kubiak blocked Wallace in the very next rally taking Poland to 23-20. All they had to do was sideout twice (on kills by Kurek) and the set was theirs.
Brazil reacted quickly and opened up a three-point lead by the first technical timeout of the second set. The Olympic champions built on that to extend it to four by the second technical timeout with an ace by Mauricio Souza on libero Pawel Zatorski.
A series of great digs by Fabian Drzyzga, Mateusz Bieniek and Leon, with kills by Kubiak and Kurek turned the set into a rollercoaster, tying the score at 18-18.
Douglas Souza was called in to replace Wallace - just for one point - putting an end to Poland's five-point run with a kill for the sideout, as Brazil recovered and once again shot off to a three-point lead for 21-18. They kept Poland at bay and reached set point with two to spare - Leon sending the last on the net.
By now, Brazil had built momentum. They went into the first technical timeout of the third set with a lead of two and never looked back, gradually widening the gap to stop at an impressive +9 as Mauricio blocked the Poles three times and Wallace got six kills from nine swings in this set alone.
Poland seemed spent as they went into the fourth and Brazil were already on a roll, taking the very first point and never once falling behind as they continued to extend their lead.
A 7-1 run from 15-12 brought Brazil beyond the reach of Poland - and by then it was just procedural. Brazil got a sideout for their 23rd point when Kubiak served on the net, Lucas Saatkamp served an ace on Leon and Bruno Rezende made the final dig before, very fittingly, Wallace delivered the last kill.
It was Brazil's first medal in the history of the VNL, after twice losing in the bronze medal match.
For Poland it is their second medal, after their bronze in 2019 when they beat Brazil in the third-place playoff.
Earlier on Sunday France had snatched the bronze medal with a sweep of Slovenia.

Well with serve we can agree, he's not so good at it and also it's exhausting when every player serve on you (well know tactic vs Poland now :D ). But in block, if he's at his normal performance he is almost unstoppable like Wallece, Leal, Kurek and even Lucarelli were in this match.

Mate, look how many titles he won, and at his stats in career. If he's playing at his normal lvl he's is harder to stop than Wallece, Leal, Kurek or Mikhaylov. Actually, he was at it about 2 years ago. I always wondered if his age was real, but no one ever disputed it.
He was blocked and neutralized. Volleyball is a mental sport. Wallace's single block killed Leon's confidence.

Leon was shellshock this game. He seems not able to perform when he is attacked defensively. Only Kurek was able to perform all game long for Poland. On the other hand, Brazil played a very well rounded game. Both Leal and Lucarelli is better than past showing and Wallace was phenomenal offensively.

Great game by Brasil and a well-deserved win. The third and fourth sets were just pure domination. I'm Polish and I didn't expect that as today Poland's squad was considered to be the strongest. In previous games in VNL, they often played Team B or even C. Today, Kurek played well but Leon was totally switched off, almost to the level of embarrassment. Semeniuk as substitution wasn't of any help. You can't win at this level if only Kurek's site is working properly. Brasil had better service, reception, attacks from left and right, the middle, and great defense. Congratz. For Heynen great stuff to analyze before the Olympics which is a priority this season. Wouldn't be surprised if both teams meet again in the finale.

Well I see most of Poland matches, and as a Pole these awards are bizarre. It was first good game from Kubiak, and he got an award? Many people in Poland wondered why he was playing instead of Śliwka and Semenikuk (champions league winners with ZAKSA) with such a weak form. He had trouble finishing his attack throughout the tournament. This is more controversial than Bruno, cuz plz think about it, on the example of the final - Bruno was playing left-right, left-right most of the time. Brazil is not playing like old Brazil all the time. Of course, there are times when they go to the attack "bench" and these players are still technically savvy, but the Brazilian game is now more physical than it used to be. Oh and ofc Wallace should be at least solo MVP. Top 2 attackers would be enough gesture to appreciate Kurek.

it's not hard to be out of this world when opposite team plays complete garbage and that's what Poland show us today. Leon was nowhere to be seen, Kubiak as standard (complete trash), Drzyzga was just a shadow of Bruno and the only man that stood up against Brasil was Kurek. So yea maybe next time Poland will play some voleyball instead of being a point deliver team.

Na igrzyska mogą dopracować formę.Za dużo błędów własnych. Brazylia się całkiem odkryła i na olimpiadzie mogą się przegrzać. Za wcześnie załadowali wszystkie działa. Na olimpiadzie może być zupełnie inaczej.

I didn't undersatnd why Drzyzga took Kurek out of game. Kurek was the best attacker of the team and still he received much few balls.

Tem tbm a questão do Leal, o cara se transforma em jogo decisivo teve jogos na fase de classificação em q ele parecia um jogador mediano.
Falou e disse. nossa seleção atua conforme o resultado q ela precisa e conforme o nível do adversário. Alguns jogos q o adversário era inferior a nós fomos mt criticados por perder sets, como se isso fosse a coisa mais absurda do mundo. Vide o jogo contra a Rússia. N precisávamos ganhar e n ganhamos. Nossos meninos n se cansaram na partida e chegaram cheios de gás contra a França q por sua vez tava confiante pelo último resultado em cima da gente, mas deram com os burros n'água pq na hora do vamo ver foram comidos com farofa.
