Icaria is famous in Greece for its laid back mentality. Eg there is a bakery where the baker is not present. The products are laid in the bakery and you leave what you owe, self service style. If someone steals, the bakery shuts for sometime as punishment :)

I was there in 1988. It is not the most scenic Greek Island but has far fewer tourists and it does not look like it has changed. One day I was sitting on the beach and saw a person swimming toward the shore about a quarter mile out. I just assumed it was a young man. Then a women came out the water who was at least 90. Every day, all the shops close down around 10am, they walk home, have a mediterranean meal, take a nap, and walk back to work around 2pm. Some of the natural hot springs that flow to the ocean are slightly radioactive and supposedly therapeutic. The food was the freshest and tastiest I had in all of Greece and dirt cheep. There's a nude beach on a remote part of the island where dozens of Europeans camp for days and weeks at a time. There's a little cafe above it so you don't have to bring supplies. You don't even need a tent because the nights are warm and there are no Mosquitos as I remember. It was a taste of paradise but I was only there a week, but after watching this I am now thinking "why the hell did I leave?"

Free flowing, low stress life with natural, local foods and strong community feeling! Of course that's the secret to a long, happy life.
I think most of us know that intrinsically but most of us are born in to the fast-paced, ruthless competitive world and economic system that requires high stress and all the other ills.
So, while we learn something important from reports on places like this, we we may want to move there, when I see places like that, I hope that we can ALL start to live more like that wherever we live. In order to do that we need to change our socio-economic system to allow for that sort of lifestyle.
That part will be the hardest, but if we can do it, the most worthwhile.

I think the difference is that they don't have stressful competition. Schools and jobs have become a place of stress because of all the competition. Even relationships have become a competition. Everything is a competition in our modern society one way or another. People on the island probably don't have that bad sort of competition. They still probably have competition in some things among each other, but they probably have fun with it instead of pulling their hair out of worry over the future. On an individual level it is better to not have that kind of modern competition environment, but that also means there can be little progress in comparison. Competition breeds progress after all...

I dont think you need to live in that island to live a happy life. My mom has told me stories of when she was a kid and lived in Mexico. She would wake up early have some eggs, feed the pigs, feed the chickens and help my grandma do chores around the house. Then she would take the warm food to my grandpa who took the goats into the mountains to graze. She would walk back home and play with her siblings. I think people can live long as long as they eat healthy, stay active, and feel great about themselves.

Despite this none have been named as "the happiest place in the world" due to the happiness index operating on totally different standards that don't take mental health and well-being in to account. two things id like to point out. nothing is inherently wrong with the things you point out Americans have. chemical pesticides and GMOs especially. however, the sheer amount of meat, sugar and fat Americans consume is just insane. combine that with the high-stress environment and a religion/culture obsessed with getting everything done before a happy death. I'm really not supprised that the Islanders with their no clock culture deal a lot better.
as a second thing. maybe it's a generational thing? as you said people have been living there for ages and with 9000 inhabitants the genetic diversity on the island is probably quite low. maybe living so healthy for so many generations has changed their DNA to deal better with the increased average age?
