All of those much more expensive and in the case of the m1 carbine, much weaker. There’s a reason people still want the sks while the m1 and literally every one of your examples has fallen out.
A friend has one of the Chinese paratrooper models with a 16" barrel and a factory scope mount. It's probably the coolest one I've shot. I really like the ones that take ak mags, as well.
@@boomerisadog3899 I have one that takes AK mags. Its a Norinco, 16" barrel, monte carlo style stock, made in 1993. They aren't military firearms though. They were made expressly for foreign commercial sales, mainly to the US. It does have a chrome lined bore though so it can handle corrosive ammo pretty well. Its a very handy little gun and its pretty easy to shoot offhand b/c its so short. Its roughly the same length as an AR15 with the stock extended all the way. Its one of the first guns I ever bought and they're pretty rare so I'll likely never sell it.
Yeah I have a Yugo SKS also with everything still on it, and matching #'s but you have to wear a glove when shooting it because your hand slides up toward the blade bayonet, and it uncomfortably pokes you, it is not sharp, just annoyingly pokey in the web of your hand. That is probably why so many of them are missing the bayonet when you buy them nowadays.
Just got one two weeks ago. Got the spike bayonet and had to replace the cleaning rod and kit. The field strip was easy but other videos say put the spring in the loose side first. But I will leave that to your discretion. Now when doing a full clean, watch out. The gas spring under your rear sight shots out like a bullet. Had to use my magnet to find it under my couch. I own one. Made in 1953 in Russia at Tula. Bought it for $100.00 at a gun show in Sacramento , California when I station at McClellan AFB back in 1994. Fun to shoot. Good video.
Bought my russian 20 years ago for next to nothing, love that gun. I notice no one ever mentions that the so called intragal magazine is easily removable and can be replaced with larger capacity magazines.
I don't think there was anything "inexpensive" about the SKS especially compared to the AK. Only that life was inexpensive/ lower value and they had vast surplus stockpiles they sold off. If they were made today, the SKS would have a higher price due to all the machining requirements.
Back in the day these were hundred dollar guns. They would shoot the cheapest Chinese steel case ammo (the stuff that used coal dust and Elbonian mud as powder) all day long and most have never seen a cleaning patch. They just work. At one time you could get an adapter kit for 30 round AK47 magazines but I haven't looked for those lately. The cheap SKS disappeared years ago but they're still a solid value even at today's prices if you can find ammunition. Lots of people have spam cans of 7.62x39 hidden away.
Back in the 90s I changed the box magazine out for some kind of pseudo-detachable magazine. I had a 30-rounder and a 45-rounder. It was a chore to swap magazines.
Own two myself: Chinese commercial and Yugo military. Fun rifles, darn accurate, highly reliable, easy to run and maintain, and comparatively inexpensive even in today's market.

Just picked up a mint Norinco SKS a few months ago and hadn't broken it down yet. Based on the comments about the recoil spring I just had to check...sure enough, the previous owner had it installed backwards. Better now. Thanks!
Two mistakes. First the hole in the butt stock is for a cleaning kit. Oil is carried in a separate bottle. Second, the recoil spring goes in with the squiggly end into the carrier, and the straight end toward the rear. Installing as shown in the video can cause malfunctions on some rifles. The translated manual I have from Russian also confirms this. This one is also missing a cleaning rod.
First off, you can tell this video is fake because Caleb's hands are still clean after he field strips and reassembles an SKS :) Also, I'm not sure how much it matters, but every manual I've found for the SKS says the recoil spring goes in the other way. Apparently the gun works well enough with it backwards though, or I assume more people would know which way is correct.
I've never installed it the way he showed. It was the other way around when I bought the gun so that's how I always reinstalled it. I'm fairly certain he installed it wrong.
Love my Norinco. Paid 280 for it about 4 years ago. Cheaper ammo, even during this ammo shortage. Mine in particular will shoot 2.5moa with regular bulk ammo. Cant beat it for the money. Even if I had to pay 500 for one, considering your other options for that price range, its still a great value.
The trap door is for the cleaning kit, Not oil the bayonet holds the cleaning rod in place, Which I see is missing on this SKS, The recoil spring you put in backwards, That also is not completely field stripped you still have to take apart the gas tube also for cleaning.

The bayonet on the SKS can be removed. Remove the pin and slide the front sight off. Cut off attachment and then turn the site around. At this time you have the option of shortening the barrel and still keeping it legal or leave the extended barrel for any cans that you might want to use. Personally I shortened mine, still legal, and put a folding stock on it.
SKS is an excellent rifle for fun plinking. I've run it in local 3-gun matches for fun - thanks to some idiotic laws our magazines are pinned to 5 rounds for any centerfire semi auto in Canada so magazine capacity isn't an issue.

Never ever misfired. A double tap on occasion when it was hot or dirty. Now detachable mags are legal now. Its' one of the guns I would have when TSHTF. Better than an AK in my opinion, better sights and more accurate.
I have 2 SKS's, a Russian and a Yugo. Both fantastic, fun and reliable. They both are in perfect working order. The Yugo were manufactured with an oversized stock for durability I'm guessing for firing the rifle grenade. I bought them years ago when they were cheep and plentiful.
Popular rifle in California since it doesn't have any of the "assault" features. One of the firearms one can get in California without needing special modifications to make compliant. Only exception are the Yugoslavian variants; they have a muzzle device used to fire rifle grenades which makes it super extra illegal in California lol.
On the butt plate. That compartment is for a small tool kit - brushes and punch tool. Your rifle is missing the cleaning rod that goes between the blade bayonet and barrel. I have a similar looking SKS - but mine was made in former Yugoslavia - blade bayonet, and no fake grenade muzzle brake. Good rifle to have!
It doesn't matter what platform you have. Sks, ak, SVT, AR, or whatever else. If you train proficiently you can become good with anything. You can make the case there are better rifles and youd be right, but I wouldnt want smacked with 7.62 x 39 or any other caliber for that matter. In the end just love what you have and train with it. My time in the u.s army I've fired many rifles and machine guns. M16, m4, m60, m249 saws, beating an m16 at 300 plus meters is no easy feet, but sks is a viable shtf fall back and I'd take one anyday, hell I have one. Cheap ammo and you dont need to worry about it breaking on you as most are milled steel. They're fun, vintage old rifles. Works for me. If your going into a battle hope you have an army with you cause no 30 round mag is gonna save your ass without numbers.
Trick I learned watching Jerry Miculek about loading an SKS. With the bolt closed and weapon on safe, turn the rifle over and pop the magazine cover open and just drop 1 - 10 rounds in there and close the cover. No clips needed
For you Tarkov fans you should watch Jonathan Ferguson from the Royal Armory museum do his reviews of small arms used in games vs real life examples. I think they're on Gamespot's youtube channel if I remember correctly. In regards to the SKS. I've probably owned 5 or so over the years and still have 2 of them. Like most of you I remember the "old days" when these things were available for under $100 and they were all over gun store shelves. A quick search looks like you'll have to shell out ~$350+ for one that hasn't been Tapco'd to death currently. Although i'm sure there are better prices out there if you look hard enough. Still a worth while rifle for the money.
3-4 MOA guns, roughly equivalent to the 30-30 but with better ballistics. I once owned a Yugoslavian SKS. Since they had no chromium, the guns were definitely built like tanks. But they were nose heavy and the stocks were short (to accommodate cold weather clothing). They make a fine club if you run out of ammunition.
I like the look of that old Chinese SKS , the stock and metal has a nice used patina , almost looks like a VIETNAM war trophy, has lots of character , best surplus rifle Ive ever owned, very fun to shoot.
good luck finding any shootable SKS for less then $800 right now.. i remember big 5 selling them for $120 and mosen for $65, i was 18 and was barely able to put gas in my truck. but still kicking myself for not getting one or two of each.
Up in Canada here they were less than $200 CAD for the longest time for unfired, still in cosmoline, versions. Now everyone is bitching because the price is around $350-400 currently. For a while a couple places were selling the crates of 10 rifles for $1300, and that was only 6 years ago
Years ago I got a 1956 Tula Sks and 200 rnds of 7.62 for $200 Canadian. Still have it and runs like a top and with all due respect mine looks wayyyyyyy nicer than the chinese one in the video. Cool Video and love the tarkov reference!
You didn't show the simple gas tube removal & inspection or push forward on the rear retainer at the back of the trigger guard loop to remove the barrel & action from the stock using the fork on the upper dust cover as a tool.
It would have been used, They covered them in cosmoline after they were used in Vietnam, Put them in packing crates and sold them to civilians. Vietnam did start with the French during the 50s when SKS's were being produced and shipped to Vietnam.
For a while the low costing sks replaced the lever action rifle as a all round used truck gun, I still have four and wished I hadn't sold the other three.
The trap door was for storing the cleaning kit...not oil. Not an internal magazine. It's a hinged box magazine. The bayonet is not integral. It is removable.
At 1:42 Caleb states he is left eyed dominant. I wonder how many people are right handed but shoot rifles and/or shotguns because they are left eye dominant?
If I had to choose 1 rifel for Armageddon end of times it would be my sks. There made for war. There tuffer than nails extremely acurate and reliable. I can feild strip and clean it without any tools. There's plenty of ammo and priced right. If it was just a small battle like a riot or something I'd grab my AR15 but I'm talking the end of the world where you don't only have to defend your self but to put food on table as well. Did anyone see the movie the road ? Well that's what I mean LOL.
Caleb with the Escape from Tarkov mention, that was unexpected af lol. I love this channel more now XD

Good video, old man.
Love your videos, but your putting the recoil spring in backwards
Good solid rifle.
That’s an awesome gun
Anyone who shoots firearms doesn't know how to field strip a SKS needs to start back to square one a BB gun.
This guy in the video should start back to a bb gun, The recoil spring is backwards
Love these videos!
You actually can remove the the bayonet lug (without damage) but you also lose the front sight, that’s a pinned sleeve over the barrel.
Always found the sks pleasing. Chunky carabine with bread knife attached (chinese version).
gamer confirmed
good luck finding any shootable SKS for less then $800 right now..
i remember big 5 selling them for $120 and mosen for $65, i was 18 and was barely able to put gas in my truck. but still kicking myself for not getting one or two of each.
Too bad Trudope banned “assault weapons” lmao
@@DelGTAGrndrs Man don't even get me started on that clown. Shit stain of Canada will be gone next election I hope
An SKS should be cleaned after 20K rounds, no matter if it needs it or not.
I had a 1955 Russian SKS, it was nevered fired when i bought it back in the 90's, wish i still had it, but i still have the oil can that came with it.
I have a Chinese SKS, would love to get a bayonet for it
Google it and viola there for sale everywhere
Gunbroker has the spiker bayonets for $30.00.
Thanks guys, looking into it now
You didn't show the simple gas tube removal & inspection or push forward on the rear retainer at the back of the trigger guard loop to remove the barrel & action from the stock using the fork on the upper dust cover as a tool.
My brother brought back an unfired Russian SKS from Viet Nam. He found it still in cosmoline.
Amazing!
It would have been used, They covered them in cosmoline after they were used in Vietnam, Put them in packing crates and sold them to civilians. Vietnam did start with the French during the 50s when SKS's were being produced and shipped to Vietnam.
Yo caleb plays Tarkov? That is so awesome
Hahahaha 2:32 I see what you did there Baron!
SKS is a beautiful rifle , I don't care what anyone says!
And EFT reference caught me off guard ! Haha make sure use BP ammo! XD
Damn Caleb, the trap door is used to store oil? The squiggly end of the recoil spring doesn't go in first?
For a while the low costing sks replaced the lever action rifle as a all round used truck gun, I still have four and wished I hadn't sold the other three.
Would be nice to see a variant video of the Yugo variant with the grenade launcher on the muzzle.
The trap door was for storing the cleaning kit...not oil.
Not an internal magazine. It's a hinged box magazine.
The bayonet is not integral. It is removable.
To be fair you do need a screwdriver to remove the bayonet and there’s not real reason to take it off.
First the trapdoor is NOT for an oil bottle it is for the Cleaning kit!
At 1:42 Caleb states he is left eyed dominant. I wonder how many people are right handed but shoot rifles and/or shotguns because they are left eye dominant?
You put the spring backwards :)
You have the recoil spring facing the wrong direction
As well as the Chinese SKS come with a spike bayonet and not a blade bayonet
how about a video recommending mounts and accessories for mil surp guns?(like a good optic mount for sks)
I'm fairly certain the recoil spring is backwards in this video
If I had to choose 1 rifel for Armageddon end of times it would be my sks. There made for war. There tuffer than nails extremely acurate and reliable. I can feild strip and clean it without any tools. There's plenty of ammo and priced right. If it was just a small battle like a riot or something I'd grab my AR15 but I'm talking the end of the world where you don't only have to defend your self but to put food on table as well. Did anyone see the movie the road ? Well that's what I mean LOL.
great point with the dustcover mountable optics. great content from you guys. thanks
What about 922R? I tapcoed mine years ago thinking about 922r. I'm going back .
You're wrong about the coil spring position. I know that from experience
Recoil spring is backwards, snake always goes in first.
Easiest way to remember the snake goes in the hole and the cleaning kit goes in the butt stock
@@al-dc6zd Good tip. 😜
