      Yes the Russians supplied the Republicans and Communists against the Nationalist or Fascists whom where supplied by the Italians and Germans. You had the T26 and BT5 for the Republicans against the Nationalists whom had some old Renault WW1 tanks, some crappy Italian L3/35 tankettes and German Panzer 1 tanks. Later in the war they used captured T26 tanks. Overall the T26 was the king of this battlefield the BT5 could not use there great mobility due to the terrain and quite a number of them where destroyed and it was the terrain that caused the tanks to only be used for infantry support.

    Don't forget it's service during the Spanish Civil War,where it proved to be extremely efective against not only Pz Is and CV-33s, but infantry and fortifications (the tanks would drive to point blank distance and shoot HE through the MG ports). Although they mainly served with the republicans, many where captured by the nationalists (aided by poor combined arms tactic implementation by the republicans, in a very similar way to the soviet problems early in the Winter War). General von Thoma, chief of the Condor Legion, offered 500 pesetas (500 times the daily pay of a nationalist soldier) from his own pocket for each T-26 captured in working order a testimony of how much they were valued.

    An interesting detail is that the Winter War actually saw these tanks used by both sides. Finland had some 30+ original Vickers 6-tonners purchased before the war. They were bought without guns for budget reasons and originally fitted with short-barreled 37 mm Puteaux guns from Finnish Renault FT's, but they were later up-gunned with Bofors 37 mm guns and later Russian 45 mm guns. Some Vickers/T-26 tanks were still in use as training tanks in the 1960s.

    • @peabase
      @peabase 11 месяцев назад

      They still are in use, as targets. I fired an M72 LAW "kessi" at one in the mid-80s, with two companies of conscripts in attendance. The T-26 remained unhurt, because the (expired) rocket fell short and hit the berm underneath the tank. It didn't do me any favours reputation-wise.

  • @robertguttman1487
    @robertguttman1487 2 года назад +1

    "...the armor was a bit thin..." The main thing one has to take into consideration about the T-26 was that it was actually a 1920s-era tank design that was being used in a 1940s war. Consequently, instead of comparing it with 1940s tanks, such as the German Mk III and Matilda, it aught really to be compared with late 1920s tanks such as the French Char B1. In that context the T-26 looks very good indeed. The only problem with it was that the Soviets kept using it far too long after it's "sell by" date.

Most sources call these up-armored T-26 "T-26E" or "T-26e" just like the KV-1E with its additional armor-plating. Same happened with some T-28 and T-34.

    'Talvisota', the Winter War. The movie depicted the fighting along the fixed Finnish defensive lines rather than the more fluid hit and run tactics the Finns became famous for, cutting the Soviet attacks to pieces. In the movie the defenders really got hammered by everything from tanks, artillery and heavy bombers, but they gave as good as they got.

      Not sure if it applied to the T-26 yet, but the Russians designed their tanks to be easily salvaged, so I would imagine it wouldn't take as much as other tanks.

    There were many variants of these tanks, one of the most interesting and less known Imo was the TT-26 or teletank, a remote controlled tank armed with flamethrower and poison gas.

    Good content and delivery from Mr. Fletcher as usual, but this one fell a bit short in my opinion. I was expecting some insight on Spanish Civil War or the Battle of Dubno.

    The T-26 was used a lot in the Spanish civil war too I think. Dominated the German and Italian "tanks" met there.

    Far fewer officers were actually killed during the Great Purge. What really crippled the Red Army was a massive expansion program which left them with a lot of officers with zero experience. You throw in the general chaos of combat and things fall apart fast.

    These and the BT series made up the vast majority of Soviet armored forces at the beginning of Barbarossa. Over 10,000 of all T-26 models were produced up until 1941.

    Man I just love Mr. Fletcher. If the museum really wants to make a killing here you go, Have a Night out With David Fletcher, build a bar inside the museum and charge people to drink with David all night. Charge for beers and entrance. Who here would not love to hear the stores and such after a couple beers? You'd be printing money.
