That said, this last time I watched it, this morning while Keira was still sleeping, I froze the TV on the page from Ainsley’s high school journal. She writes that Sophie is a goddess, wonders if Sophie will ever know her name, and writes that she’s interesting because Ainsley can’t quite figure out if high school is everything to Sophie, or just passing through. From this I figured that Ainsley certainly knew of her, but maybe was always too nervous about trying to make friends with her. That brings me up to some critical comments… I would like to have seen some indication that Ainsley knew, or didn’t know, that Sophie was into women. I think as a viewer I needed to understand that. @@juliahartley-barnes975 Interesting takes by you. Maybe my take is going to be a bit different on some things but that is in no way a critique of anyone. Everyone gets different things from works of art, which "City of Trees" absolutely is, in my humble opinion! First of all a shout out to the excellent cast, particularly Alexandra Swarens and Olivia Buckle. They both were outstanding! Swarens creates so much with so little it seems to me. I almost think a huge budget would be wasted on her talents (though I am sure she would disagree :)). She just goes to the Dollar Store/Target or places like that and buys the littliest things - that have a huge impact. When Ainsley brings all the stuff to Sophies Dad's grave, I mean, that stuff was probably less than 20 bucks. But it helped create a powerfull scene nonetheless. She has stuff like that all through the film. That's because the emphasis is always on the characters in a Swarens production. Their actions and reactions. Their fears, their hopes and dreams. The human condition is examined. And it's examined in a new refreshing way that I've not seen before. She makes you piece together things simply by watching the actors reactions to events. While other filmakers do this too, Swarens cuts the film together in a way that makes sense later, but at first you are lost. She weaves together a road that makes perfect sense, but it only does so when you get to the end of it. People are full of imperfections and Swarens is a master of capturing and examining those imperfections. There are also pauses in dialog that probably would drive hollywood directors/screenwriters insane, but I love it! I think she has invented a NEW type of pause. I'm calling it the Swarens pause! I found it interesting that you say you missed the writing in Ainsley's notebook - expressing her love for Sophie in High School. I thought that was a huge part of the film. It further burdened Ainsley. Not only was she was super shy in school, but she also had a huge crush on Sophie. That was key to me and added to the awkward early encounters with Sophie. The crux of the Film is Ainsley's fear of her past High School days and her perceived failure there. That is compounded with the failure of her unexpressed love of Sophie, which creates so much more tension in the the film until the end when Ainsley finally comes to terms with her (perceived) failures. Regarding Sophie's sexuality, remember it was Sophie who continued to pursue Ainsley - though in a subtle way I thought - early on. However when Sophie asked Ainsley to get some coffee, I think Ainsley knew then that there was something there. Even the first time through (watching the film) there was no doubt in my mind that Sophie had a crush on Ainsley after that scene. But even earlier in the film I saw Sophies interest in Ainsley - but was not sure. When Sophie asked Ainsley to kiss her, all bets were off for me at that point. It was on. I needed no further explaination. And I think that also added to the surprise of that scene. Was anyone expecting that? Not me. But Swarens is never going to hand anyone anything on a platter. She is super good that way. She explains nothing most of the time. And I find that to be exhilerating filmaking! Quite a cut above the usual Hollywood fare. All of Swaren's screenplays that I have seen so far are so well thought out. She is a brilliant filmaker. I can't wait to see what is next!
"People ask you your job right off the bat so they can calculate how much respect to give you." Felt thatttttt, this is a really great film, loved it start to finish. 👏
Took the words right out of my mouth. It’s so true, isn’t it? Hell, I believe I’m guilty of that behavior myself. Logically I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but it happens.
This movie seemed so intimate and emotionally raw, I felt that I was invading their privacy. I can honestly say I was smiling the whole 1 hour and 27 minutes while looking at the screen 👏
It's so rare for a movie to be shot so honestly, vulnerably, and truthfully. There are so many beautiful moments: with her family, how things have changed since high school, and the pain of doubting yourself. This movie is so well done that I almost feel like I'm intruding on watching beautiful moments. It's one of my go-to movies when I'm not feeling great - I love how it feels like real life, and nature is a big part of it. Alexandra creates pieces like this in general, and her acting is so methodical that you really lose yourself in watching. This is what art is about - making people think, reflect, change their stories, and paths. And my straight friends love it so much too :)
100% agreed with every words of yours. I'm just watching it right now, it's so cozy, comfy...something I can relate to really easily. Helps me arrange my thought while watching it...making me smile too.
The down to earth content of this film was pleasantly amazing. This was not just a holiday story, it was an everyday type of story. Nurturing, one to another, is one of life's most special nuances.
I could watch this movie over and over again (already kinda did). Alexandra and Olivia are so cute together. They really depict something that feels so real. Their characters are awkward but that’s also how most first stages of a relationship are. It’s such a heart warming movie that deserves more recognition. Also love that they did looking for her together. I hope they’re good friends irl.
@@Eric-zt8ocrespectfully, that makes no sense. Being lesbian or bi has nothing to do with what you wear during sex or hair length. And sexuality isn't something you get to choose for others. But thank you for your comment! I wish you more education in the near future!
This movie touched me very much ,because it showed how BEAUTIFUL love between two women can be. Loving somebody with all your heart can never be wrong........ :-)
Thank you for this masterpiece. From start to an end it was perfect. Directing writing acting also music was so great. Love to see that you can make full movie with same sensibility and realness like your shorts ones. This really touch me deeply in my soul.
this is really such a good movie, it's so acting, cinematography and dialogs are all so organic, I felt like I was actually peeking at real people's lives, I just know that I will be coming back to watch it over and over again.
I should’ve know they did a movie together before “Looking For Her”. They have the best chemistry. Nothing seems forced, just so natural. Clearly they need to keep acting together. ❤
Thankyou for putting this on youtube.. I was looking for it was not able to find a way to watch it over here in India... Great work by all..! I am in love with everything in and about the movie
this is really cute! I absolutely loved it ! I liked the progression how there was some awkwardness and tension and then they became more comfortable with each other and vibed. Very realistic. Thank you for this film
i am so glad to have stumbled upon the trailer for 'looking for her' and consequently stumbling upon this wonderful film. wonderful writing, acting, and music. this film instantly became my favorite holiday sapphic movie. it is so raw, intimate, and delicate. it truly felt like i was invading their privacy, like a lovebug on one of the branches of the trees witnessing two women fall in love. i honestly can't put into words how this film made me feel. it just so BEAUTIFUL. it's instantly gonna be one of my comfort and favorite holiday sapphic movie which i will religiously watch every holiday now 😭❤️
Omg i love it so much. I’m so glad that this movie came up in my recommendations. I haven’t seen such a great lgbt movie for a long time. Amazing work and very talented actors and actresses
I so loved the girl with the light hair. The chemistry between them was so undeniable that she asked for kiss. If you never ask for what you want, you'll never know. Being curious is a waste of time. Kudos to the girl who asked for what she so patiently wanted. I think she didn't mind the immediate response (the kiss) and the ultimate bliss.
It's been two months and I'm not over it. Alexandra really does have a way with writing and directing.. the whole package. Someone give her all the money to make more like this.
I really like Alexandra Swarens’s writing. Dialogue is never obvious or on-the-nose. I loved the scene with Dad around 1:08:00 - “You keep looking back and bumming yourself out with stuff from the past. You can’t do anything about that. Just take this day and go forward.” Boy, if ever anything resonated more for me.
I´ve just seen City of Trees in the RUclips; the film was a very good surprise and, when it ended, I felt like watching it again. All the actors are great and so is everything else in the film. Dialogues seem very natural and so the way the whole story develops. Many thanks to all who took part in the project - you all did a very good job indeed!
this is what happiest season and even straight Christmas romance films aspire to be it was very well done. Would def recommend it to friends and family and even strangers.
This movie’s been on my list for a bit! I’m kicking myself I didn’t watch it sooner!! Unfortunately, I recently just discovered Alexandra Swarens!! She’s an amazing actress for making the audience feel the emotion’s she is portraying on screen! It is rare for me to physically come to tears at times and only a handful of actresses move me in this way. Naturally I’ve spun into this deep dive of Alexandra Swarens!! Apparently, I’ve been living under a large f’ckin’ boulder! THIS IS MY P.A. Everyone, she is kind of a big deal, to me anyhow, and she should be to you and our community! Seriously, is anybody else mesmerized w/ literally everything Alexandra Swarens is involved with!? She has stared in/written/created/Directed/produced, even assisted on set just because (The fortnight, behind the scenes). Alexandra Swarens please do not stop what you are doing! ❤️
In terms of actual content and quality of the content, there won't be another Christmas movie this year that will even match it's levels! This felt so honest and I have been in the exact frame of mind and state, like Alexandra's! What an amazing film!
Such a good movie. I loved every part of it. I love the reactions Sophie had to Ainsley because you could tell she was remembering everything differently. But when you’re in your own head it’s hard to see that someone else could have a different perspective and recollection of things. I like seeing Ainsley find out she’s wrong and Sophie figuring out how to communicate when things feel closed off. I liked the conversation by the fire. I liked all the conversations in the movie actually. It was nice and had a great flow/openness to them. I like the talk of self sabotage because we can do that so easily with the way things have gone from our perspective. It’s hard to see a way out of that mindset. It can become so ingrained and it takes talking about how we feel or perceive things to change it.
so beautiful. I loved that you didn’t feel the need to make it chock full of a million different angles and cuts. It felt so real, like I was there watching it. brilliant work 🖤🎞📽
Kiara mae, this wrong relationship. The real relationship is between a woman and a man. Love is always and forever beneficial to the body and brings fruits, I mean children, and was not harmful to the body. When this wrong relationship occurs, that energy will be extracted, there will be no benefit, and the right relationship between a woman and a man will give health to both parties. In fact, love has been distorted by this type of human being
@@pysiunia1576 You also support the wrong relationships. Prove to me that this love. But you can't, because inside you, that's not love. Love was not the killer itself, it was not harmful and it has no future. Love is permanent, but this wrong relationship will not last because it is evil, it is temporary. Stand with your country that is against this relationship and stay away from watching these relationships because it has no future
It was posted a year ago, but I just came across it in a movie search and I really enjoyed it. I was very glad Ainsley and Sophie where together by the end, so many LGBT movies end in tragedy or sorrow. When I was young, from a child through young adulthood, I always felt I had to have my career aspect laid out and working perfect because inside, though due to a childhood of pain and blood, out side of my career I was a hollow being with a shelf full of masks I wore for whatever public face I needed. Whenever work wet bad for me, it hit hard because I had nothing to fall back on. Therapy helped immensely when I was older. But I could understand somewhat how Ainsley felt and was glad that she had family to fall back on that seems to me helped her to open up to Sophie. It is a very thought provoking movie and I think we'll made. Congratulations and thank you for giving of your time and energy for our benefit! 😁
Thank you. What a great film about genuine people and natural relationships between them. So simple, so true and so human. Miss this kind of films, love it. 💛

Cute. There's something very real about the writing in this movie. The dialogues seem so raw, the sort that would actually happen in real life. (That Toyland song was a test of patience, of course, but other than that - lovely movie.)

This movie was something classic piece af Art... A woman goes back to her hometown for the holidays for the first time in several years and she is not only met with people from her past, but she’s forced to deal with unresolved feelings too. The story reveals in what shapes a person-including everything from their past, their family, their loss, their regrets and their inhibitions. It is insightful, yet subtle, and sprinkled with love from different angles , The dialogues and the way the movie was shot feels raw and draws you in it's almost like you’re watching someone’s home video. There is no drama added for the sake of it, no grand gestures, no fancy special effects, nor fake sentiments. The family dynamic feels genuine and all the characters are relatable and they fumble in their own ways. Watching this movie is like being invited over to a nice family dinner; it is very homey, satisfying, and heart-warming love story 🏳️🌈🌈 ❤

This was for sure the most honest and beautiful movie I’ve seen this year. The chemistry is huge between them! 🥰
Excuse mam are u lesbian
These girls remind me of my gf and I. Just sweet pure love and care.
Everything Alexandra Swarens does is GOLD. As a Writer, Director, Actress. Everything. Thanks for your great work. ❤️
Omggggg I’m soooooo in love with her❤
as a "bloke", I'm probably not your target audience but I really like this movie and the love story within. 🙂🙂♥️♥️
The down to earth content of this film was pleasantly amazing. This was not just a holiday story, it was an everyday type of story. Nurturing, one to another, is one of life's most special nuances.
I could watch two more hours of this. Love it! Great work, everyone!
They are friends nothing more. No woman is lesbian or bi
@@Eric-zt8oclol I know many women who are lesbian or bi. Including myself.
@@shannon982 you're not lesbian or bi 😂. That's why one always gets her hair cut short and wears a strap. Every woman is straight

❤ the chemistry between them is undeniable. Their next film takes off even farther. Here is to both of their careers taking off. Love them both.
They find the man of their dreams and start a family. That's perfect
i am so glad to have stumbled upon the trailer for 'looking for her' and consequently stumbling upon this wonderful film. wonderful writing, acting, and music. this film instantly became my favorite holiday sapphic movie. it is so raw, intimate, and delicate. it truly felt like i was invading their privacy, like a lovebug on one of the branches of the trees witnessing two women fall in love. i honestly can't put into words how this film made me feel. it just so BEAUTIFUL. it's instantly gonna be one of my comfort and favorite holiday sapphic movie which i will religiously watch every holiday now 😭❤️
Omg i love it so much.
Right I already watched looking for her more than once and i could watch this over and over again too
I really like Alexandra Swarens’s writing.
Thank you so much!!! I was looking for it ..... Everything with Alexandra Swarens is beautiful!!! 😍❤️
Yeah you're right. Alexandra Swarens is great. She is a very very beautiful person inside out. Love her a lot ❤️❤️.
this is what happiest season and even straight Christmas romance films aspire to be it was very well done. Would def recommend it to friends and family and even strangers.
i loved how slowly it goes the romance & personalities were amazingly matching
I love the intimacy between Ainsley and Sophie. Everything about this movie I love. It’s so cute and healing. I can’t stop watching it.
This is such a simple movie and yet it's probably one of the best films i've seen this year.
so beautiful. I loved that you didn’t feel the need to make it chock full of a million different angles and cuts. It felt so real, like I was there watching it. brilliant work 🖤🎞📽

@YUZUTOPFTW6747 watch the movie LOOKING FOR HER
It was posted a year ago, but I just came across it in a movie search and I really enjoyed it.
