This don't work for me either .... BUT it did put me on the right track. I changed the output to 'Open GL output for windows' and set Deinterlacing to 'off'. That did the trick for my footage. My footage was Prores 422 50i. Good luck peeps.
This is a problem caused by the Direct3D Video Acceleration engine Try switching away from that in Preferences --> Input/Codecs --> Hardware Accelerated Encoding to something like DXVA 2.0 or just disable it outright
This worked, but only for the first video I try and play. Once I try and play another or even try and open the same video again it stutters all over the place. Any reason why?
Doesn't work. I've used automatic, and automatic is default btw I'VE FOUND THE SOLUTION!! 1. go to forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=146534 2. Follow InTheWings instructions!
the problem was it went green by changing one thing in input codecs before it went flashing . After that it went green aand then black finally I managed it right.. preferences ------input codecs -----hardware accelerating -----disabled ...enjoy the VLC.....
Audio works but video doesn't so either change your hard accel to disabled or throw yourself into macs failcase system and let it auto detect but be warned it can fuck everything up cause... apple.

Thank you. This solved my problem with playing certain MKV files that had flickering green frames.
resolved my problem immediately, thanks. it does seem to just be the MKV format that was having issues.
Didnt work for me sadly
Does not work. This issue is not limited to VLC but also Windows Media player
