- It's time to Pokemon Go...to the polls and vote for the name of Utah's NHL team! Owner Ryan Smith tweeted out a link to the poll, with a list of 20 names to choose from. Which will win? Time will tell. But not only that, the team found out its NHL Draft fate and showed off exciting new plans for downtown Salt Lake City.

Yeti is so much better than Yetis
I feel the exact opposite. It should be plural because there's more than one Yeti. It would be like calling them the Utah Cat instead of Utah Cats. Bears, Eagles, Ravens, Penguins all are plural.
Both sound corny af to me. Nothing rolls off the tongue imo better than Utah Zion -- but not sure if it is allowed because it might have some religious connotation.

They'll be named and uniforms by early August. With that many names, they already have everything planned for at least half of the names. They want to sell merch as soon as possible and definitely before the start of the season.
That would be the smartest decision for hype & business. I really hope this is the plan, but that's not what was in their disclaimer about our inaugural season. I doubt we'll be named this year.

Arizona Diamondbacks wouldn't like saving Black Diamonds for baseball, I'm guessing. For hockey, Utah Mammoth would rule.

I know you don't love Venom, and I don't know why tbh, but I think that name checks all the boxes you wanted in your vid about the Milwaukee Bucks. It's agressive, it fits with the area, you can choose the colors you want and it's original.
For the names ''Caribou'' and ''Mammoth'' my main problem is that when you decide to go singuliar, it's because you speak about a ''mythical animal'' like the Kraken and Yeti, per exemple. It's why I love Venom too. I think it would have been better to put Caribous and Mammoths.
But at least, now we have a couple of good names so I'm like you, my faith is back haha

Caribou has really grown on me. Could be cool. I voted Mammoth, Caribou, Outlaws and Venom. I had heard a rumor that Cutthroat was also on the list, I was disappointed that it wasn’t.
With recent tragic events in hockey cutthroats could be really insensitive.

@@SLCPuck I think venom is the least likely of the ones I voted for, also the more I think about mammoth the more I like it.
I really hope they avoid classic Utah Jazz colors.

Yeti / Mammoth / Blizzard / Caribou. Only real options. Most of the others just seem to be tossed in to make it look like its a huge fan vote of 20 options.

I only voted for 3. Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom. But I'm mostly done caring. Even if it's a name I hate, I'll get used to it. I'm going to buy all the merch anyway. I hated Yeti when I first heard it, but I'm getting used to it since it's talked about so much. Just give us a name. Any name!!!

I voted for Black Diamonds, Mammoth, Mountaineer's, and Blizzard. Don't like Yeti. It sounds good but has nothing to do with the state or people, also thought Freeze was interesting, considering we had an indoor soccer team called the Freeze back in the 2000's.

What a way to fail the debut! Coming out colorless with no name & identity...Really bugs the hell out of me. But I hope the wait is worth it.
They’re not failing the debut. They’re doing it the right way. There was a rush to get the team out of Arizona but now they can take their time and really nail this branding. They can’t get it wrong, there’s only chance to get this right and make something that’ll last forever.

Outlaws is just so unoriginal. There are 3 or 4 other minor league teams that are outlaws and several other sports with outlaws as the team name. We can do better.
Bodie Brazil, another sports channel, claims there are 13 other pro sports teams in North America alone with the Outlaws name. For that reason alone, I can't support it.
@@UrbanPorcupinebrodie brazil is pretty inaccurate with a lot of things and has some pretty bad takes imo. If the standard is to avoid a name that no team has from beer league hockey to professional lacrosse then I would argue that’s an impossible standard to hit.
Disclaimer, I like outlaws because of it’s connection to the states history and as a cool hockey mascot with penalty boxes and fights ect.
But as far as originality goes, if you list active organizations Outlaws is number 100 on most common mascots database at 41 teams in north america. If you only count professional teams like the Womens football alliance, Texas United Football league etc only 7 have the name outlaws. None in hockey. Outlaws is less common than Redskins which is ranked at #70 on most common mascots. Behind Oilers (80), pioneers (35), blue devils (29), rockets (37), hurricanes (61), bombers, yellow jackets (75), REDS (77), thunderbirds (85), Hornets (21) and the like. This isn’t as common as you think, especially in hockey.
