Reminds me of my Dad. His work didn’t define him. Some may have thought he didn’t have enough ambition or responsibility. But at the end of his life he wasn’t remembered for being a very good nuclear engineer. He was remembered for how he made other people good about themselves and valued. He probably had no idea how valued he really was.
I love how soft-spoken you are, but every word you say carried so much weight with truth and honesty. Thank you for reminding us that our work doesn't define who we are.
Thanks for reminder. It’s exactly what I needed to hear. I’m in the midst of changing positions and roles in my company and I’m feeling a little lost in transition. Letting go of something that has “define” me for a while will need some getting used to. But your message is a great reminder that my identity, self worth, respect and values should not be tied with my position. The change shouldn’t stop me from continuing to be my best self. Thanks again Sena!
Great video, Sena. Just watched a couple of your videos and really like how you own your space and share who you are and what you believe in. Looking forward to watching some more of your content. Sending best from London.
Thank u, I was troubled over my work and unnecessary expectations … with yr video It dawn on me that I shouldn’t do that and finally understood a lot of things.
Your topic is really great. It made me think about my job and yes it should not define one's life and happiness. Having a good life is all about experiences and the way you give back to people and just beingat peacewith yourself. Its important to have a passion in life, or a hobby which is more than just work.
We are coached from a young age to closely identify with our work, like asking “what do you wanna be when you grow up?” That gets reinforced as adults. We introduce people as “my lawyer friend” and ourselves as “I’m an entrepreneur”. And if our work falls apart, our identify goes along with it! That’s why it’s so important to understand your identity isn’t your work, altho yes your identity certainly shows up in how you deal with the highs and lows at work.
Hi Sena, I would also like to run away from people who behave differently after knowing what I do for a living. If you manage to find a society that looks at us as who we are, please let me know. I love your videos. Motivating. We are in the same wave length. At least now I wont feel I am alone.
Definitely constant identity crises as a working musician teaching in a classroom, doing random gigs, church gigs, and teaching private lessons simultaneously. Can end up going a direction you didn't intend to with something that is supposed to be a passion
yes, I concur with your opinion, one's value cannot be judged by their job position, title, education, etc... but how you associate with your society and human being kind. Everything is impermanent, just be happy and satisfied with what you have in every moment going on your life.
Good job brother, I find that there is a plethora of RUclips channels that are dedicated to shallow, mundane topics, and empty distractions, but on the other hand, you bring up interesting points of views with thoughtful content that’s deep, and shows your intelligent critical thinking skills 👏 Keep up the great work man (bilingual and bi-cultural people have a great advantage in creating videos) The world desperately needs more people like you 🤙🏽 Arigatou gozaimasu!
I am Service To Others. I´m working with disabled kids and just by looking at there faces, when I care for them, I´m pretty sure I´m at the right place in life. In my case, my job defines me, I am STO.
Good advice. Let not yr job (or position) define you. I hv done a variety of low status jobs when I was young. I needed money. Till i saved enough to pursue a degree. Then I took up a teaching job. Never regretted it even tho a teacher's salary is nothing to shout about. The satisfaction comes from seeing young people improve n gain confidence in themselves. In return they respect you. Dont get caught up in a rat race!
I got anxiety as I graduate from uni because not getting 'cool' job like other smarter students.. or born from rich family with inherited business or wealth... when only option is only job that is looked less 'cool' one.. 5 years passing now I have one quite easy job, and two great passive income.. your video summed up my career life.. society tend to look at degree, title, position.. we sometimes forget that they didn't pay our bills. Don't let any unnecessary pressure from them in
I think it's important to understand that your work doesn't define you, but I think some level of financial stability that allows you to live the life you want to live is also important.
Brilliant! Absolutely great outlook and beyond truth. It’s obvious and common sense if people would just take a little time each day to think about things other than money, material things and status.
Passionate of being happy go lucky and laziness, what future of that might become compared to those who work hard to build a purpose in life helping others to be productive in the society
Materialistic people do ask what one do for a living. I never care about what job they have. At the same time, I do not care what people think of me. I do not feel insulted if people do not think highly of me. I know who I am.
Thank you Sena! Your videos make me think about the deep of the life. I always look for people that really appreciate great ideas for living a better life. We need more people that feel and think from the hearth to the brain at the same time. You are a ligth in this world.
Thank you for this. The ideas you put forward in your videos always seem to have been carefully thought through and your presentation style engages the viewer from start to finish.
That's ironic I'm a massage therapist and I always catch myself after I asked this question wondering why is this important after I ask someone what they do for a living I guess it's a way that we make conversation and find commonality but I believe I Better Way Forward is to ask what they're interested in instead like you said
People pay respect to the person who is a CEO because that person achieving that position speaks about the determination and skills of that person. People do need luck to get there too but still, it's unlikely that someone lazy or average will get there.
@@SenaShimotsuma Thank you for replying me. sena san, I totally feel you and somehow I can guess your current situation that you have been facing some culture shocks and difficulties after coming back to Japan. you know what I also had quite similar experience 16 years ago. but I had no choice, just I was supposed to accept the new circumstances after getting back to my country from oversea. so, it is not an advice, I just want you to kindly take my opinion comfortably because I would like to share my previous experiece in south korea and want to talk about how I could get over my wierd situation back then. If I were you...hm.. I recommend you to learn something new, eg. new languages, new sports, otherwise meeting (girl) friend who is willing to share everything with you.
I feel like you're mostly addressing salarymen/women in Japan; but are their some people in Japan who love their jobs? Of course. I've seen tons of work in Japan videos on gardeners, chefs, manga artist, teachers, etc. And they love going to work. I had a professor at university say once that you can choose from two paths. 1. Choose a job you love and don't worry about the money. 2. Or choose a job that makes a ton of money to pay for your hobby and make sure you have time to pursue it. As a teacher of young children, my whole career is extrmemely meaningful to me. It's all about developing relationships with children, parents, collegues. I have a small part in spreading happiness day to day for tons of people. So yeah, I do like my job, and I feel like it does define me.
Great video! Sobering thoughts, challenging while facing the prevailing winds of the culture we live in though. Good reminder to keep trying.

Nice content you've been creating Sena. This is something highly important to talk about it. Our generation has been changing this mindset of work life although there's a long way to. Work doesn't define us.
I wouldn't mind working as a garbage man if that would make me enough money to live a life that I want, and it's nothing extravagant just enough to do things that I can't afford. Like having motorcycle and traveling from time to time. I don't care what others think but being limited constantly puts you back on that "what are you doing" track. Especially "what are you doing with your life" track. Being unable to live like you want brings constant frustration.
Just like what i read from the little prince book by Antoine de saint-exupery.. Talking about the grown-ups; When you tell them that you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, "What does his voice sound like ? What games does he love best ? Does he collect butterflies ?" Instead they demand: "How old is he ? How many brothers has he ? How much does he weigh ? How much money does his father make ?" Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him. I like your point of view on this topic btw:)
This is exactly where I am at in life. It’s my dream to live in Japan in a few years, however I am concerned what kind of life I can live there as a minimalist and stay true to my beliefs since I know it is a work oriented society in general.
Not really sure how honest you are. For the fact that you are so into your body (lifting weight), it shows that you really care about your appearance. You may just talk.
Like if you think your work doesn't define you :)
That's not true. World judges you with your work and status only.
I've faced this all my life.
Wise opinion, i like the quote you share : "your work doesn't define you", "job is something you do, not something you are."
Appreciate your sharing
I think it makes a huge impact. Especially in trying to date someone on the same educational level.

Listening to your voice and how you see life is, so mentally soothing.
Totally agreed! I personally don't like being asked about my job or asking people about their job the first time we talk.
The words that I needed to hear. I'm crying while watching this vid. THANK YOU! Watching from the Philippines
