I had my first Borzoi for 15 years. He was a 4 month old when I got him. Potty training was hard .I was constantly cleaning poop. One time the last time I was cleaning poop, he was investing how I was cleaning i was crying silently .He leaned over and locked a tear from my face. He never pooped in the house again.
I absolutely love borzoi and fell in love with them in 6th grade (I’m in 9th grade now) and I read this book called “Lara’s gift” and it’s about her family breeding borzoi’s and stuff and her falling in love with them but anyways i hope to own one once older and done with collage so I will have time for it!
Ohmygosh, thank you! This was brilliant-so many great tips, plus your additional comments in the description box. Love the tip about walking the puppy first before bringing him home the first time. And mental stimulation in addition to physical. ...For throwaway blankets, I’ve started buying some super cheap sheets/blankets/towels at the local thrift store. Thank you again-I really appreciate this video. I’ll be bringing home our boy zoi in about 3 weeks, so excited! :)
My silken can pull like a draft horse, so the martingale didn't work out. She had coughing fits and looked back at me in horror like I was doing it. I've talked to a few other silken owners who said the same thing. Silkens are known for their talent at weight pull. Gee I wonder why 😒 I'm posting this because of the lack of silken videos on RUclips. I watched some of your videos on borzoi, videos about whippets, and averaged them out in my head. So if someone else is considering a silken, just know that you might need a harness. I've trained her not to pull most of the time but she still does when she sees squirrels. The silken windhound discord is a great source of info and I wish I found it earlier. Happy noodling everyone!
Thank goodness, I was just wondering whether or not a harness might be better! I really just want my future silken's collar to hold her info, a tractive GPS device, and I want it to be pretty (more jewellry than a walking device; definitely still a martingale but a pretty martingale.) I've never been comfortable with walking dogs with just a collar. 😬 Anyway thank you thank you thank you for your comment!!
Do you think a harness would also be better for scent hound (basset /mixed)? Like she can pull through the collar and I hate for her to choke. I don’t use choke and prong bc they scare her. (I did use those in the very beginning for like 2 weeks when I got her (she’s 4 and I got her at 4 yrs). I use a flat collar and her block head makes it no issue for slipping out but wondering if harness would be gentler for her. ❤
Great video, been enjoying the whole series and this has been super helpful. Very timely as well as we're bringing our Borzoi puppy home in just under 2 weeks time. Super excited, can't wait :)
Can you do a video about how to discipline a Borzoi? I’m planning on getting one soon and this is one of the areas I feel really unsure in. I know they are sensitive and require a gentle hand. I want to make sure I’m communicating in a healthy way that makes boundaries clear for them but isn’t a going to hurt them emotionally or physically. Thanks!
I’ve been watching your videos for weeks now, and I have learned so much! Thank you for all the work that you put in to all of your videos. We are bringing home our first Borzoi in 2 weeks. He will be 12 weeks old and he is already a lapdog. The links with this video were also welcome-I had never heard of the bark mat but I’m adding it to our checklist. We have had retired racing Greyhounds in the past and we have one 11 year old Greyhound girl right now. Your tip about paying extra attention to Esper when you got the puppy was great. Thank you!
I LOVE borzois! Learn from my pain. Have an emergency plan, make sure the person willing to take care of your dog in case of emergency really means it, put the emergency plan in writing, hand out several copies. I had only a verbal agreement with a person who said she would take care of my dog in case of emergency but instead gave her away. That heartbreak is much much worse than my brain cancer! I miss you Talinn!
I'm sorry your pet sitter gave away your dog?? What?? My goodness on top of the hell of cancer you lost your Borzoi. I can't believe that happened to you. Fuck Cancer btw. I hope you are doing okay.
@@hmac163 a bit more info. It was and still is terminal brain cancer and the pet sitter is my identical twin. Didn’t want to take care of her after I got out of the hospital and I still had rehab to go. So she took it to a dog pound. Can you believe that?!? A dog pound for a borzoi. Thankfully a friend went to get her and took her to her vet. But the vet loved her so much she just kept her and wouldn’t give her back. A vet. Her vet. Took my dog while I was recovering from brain cancer surgery (baseball sized tumor) and would not give her back. After six months fighting cancer and for her my borzoi was so used to her new home they talked me into letting her stay. She died last year so I never got to see her again. Incredible but true. How selfish people can be.
No I am not ok but I am headed to Heaven so actually it is what it is and I am on my way to heaven. So grateful I believe in Jesus or this would make no sense at all!
I've ordered the martingale collar for Arlo. It's coming from the US, so will get here eventually. He slipped out of his collar this morning and was like wheeee... only for a moment, he didn't race off, phew. My old doggy (staghound) had a martingale, I still have it, but Arlo needs his own. cheers from Australia!!
@@esperborzoi same. I can take him off leash in a couple of safe areas where I live. Yesterday was near there but on the footpath. I live in a quiet area and he didn't run off.. I've bought... actually this'll be my third martingale collar from the US as Perry had 2 over his life.. 1 from eBay and two from the regal hound. Cheers! Ps your doggys are looking lovely..
I over exercised my german shorthair in the first 6 months. I took him to the dog park to play for 1-2 hours a day. He needed more rules at home and human/ public socialization. When I did more obediance training he got more mellow at home. He is an excellent service dog and goes everywhere, but strangers and kids hes super cautious with.
Hi love the videos! Just a trick for sighthound and lurcher owners. Stop buying expensive dog beds! Buy a memory foam cot mattress. Mine cost £20 on Amazon Perfect for “ bony” dogs who needs comfort!
Thank you so much for the info! My puppy is arriving in 2 days. Cant wait to send you pics! Also I'd like to thank you for recommendation of the Purina Pro Plan food. I got the Large puppy - Athletic breed kind. And my vet said that is currently the best kibble on the market. And a good one for borzois. One question, since I dont think i'll be able to get a martingale collar for my puppy yet, Is harness a good option?
Pleeeasseee send me pictureeessss!!!! Ora and Esper both LOVE purina pro plan - best poops ever. When Esper escaped from her regular collar we immediately got her a harness (this was the first day we had her, lol) , They definitely work, and I know a few people who use them regularly. My only concern with harnesses is that they can be more secure, but they can encourage tugging since the dog feels secure pulling against a lead - this is not a borzoi specific fact rather more in general. You could try both, or start with a harness until you get a martingale.
Hey I'm planning on adopting a borzoi once I move out of my current place, I was wondering if you could make video summing up the costs of everything. Maybe upfront cost and then continual costs with dog food, treats, toys etc.
I can do something to address this, but aside from the upfront cost (the price of the dog) Borzois do not cost more than other dogs, in fact, they could be cheaper - for a giant breed they don't eat that much, they do not require any fancy grooming, and a lot of them could care less for toys, they are also a very healthy breed so (hopefully) vet bills are small as well.
Do you live in a large apartment and have space for them to roam outside? I really want a borzoi but I've seen breeders having puppy requirements with a certain yard size and a fence. The live in a medium size home and I have a backyard that isn't so big but I do plan on walking, exercising, and letting the borzoi roam in a fenced area. I feel like this wouldn't be enough for the breeders though :(
I do live in an apartment, and never had an issue. We have many dog parks nearby too, and I dedicate a lot of time to exercise. A lot of borzoi breeders require yards ( and i can understand why), but if you can show that you are going to give exceptional care, some of them will overlook that. I put an article about borzois in apartments on my website www.espertheborzoi.com I hope it helps!

Borzoi: Lying on couch. 'Owner': Sitting in the floor.
this dog looks like it understands everything you're saying man. so mature and knowing. what a graceful animal :)

Great tip! They are bony and need padding!
Dogs grow feet first then hindquarters then forequarters. At about 6 to 8 months they have a higher backend.. that's normal not due to stress.. X
Great information and advice thanks for sharing!
love the borzoi videos!!!!!!!!

Lock down wasn't good time to get a dog, wrong. You go back to work and dog is left or you're too busy to care for it.
