Didn't expect this collab! Imo Elliot is a breath of fresh air in the cycling scene, were everyone is so anal about training plans, FTP, race results... The dude just enjoys cycling, he's still ambitious but he does it for the passion and telling a story and making cycling look good.
Great episode guys - Elliot was really articulate and loved the clothing and brand chat. Nice to see someone be honest about loving the aesthetic of cycling and pushing that side of his content. Keep the YT vids coming VC.
South Floridian here. He is 100% right the doping culture in the masters racing scene is totally out of control. A great example is looking at time trial results and quite often the 45-50 cat winner will have better times than the 30-35. Reason is that if you have decent health insurance it will cover pretty shady "anti-aging" doctors who will put you on heavy anabolics plus who knows what else. So all these rich guys in the master 45-55 scene are on rocket fuel. It's not as bad in central florida, but there are plenty at every race. Easy to detect IMO, when you see a 55 year old with a 360w FTP who was never a pro or anything close in his youth, you can be sure he has quality health insurance.
By your estimation would you say these "TRT" guys are just only taking TRT doses, or is it more like they are doing full on steroid cycles, or is it they did steroid cycles in the past, and thus they have to be on TRT for the rest of their life?
@@JohnSmith-ck5qk the one cyclist I know who is openly doing it said its a "one-way street" so it sounds like TRT for the rest of their lives to permanently stay around some arbitrary very high level, at least the way his doctor has him set up.
It's not necessarily just better health insurance. By 45-50 guys are further into their careers, have made enough money that they can pay cash for the TRT and have more free time to train.

Re our Australian group rides being early morning here: I think our summer heat plays a big part, along with the traffic considerations. Over summer, when cycling is most popular, getting out and back before the peak heat (often 35+ degrees Celsius) is far more enjoyable.
I've always ridden early mornings, both in Sydney and in Viet Nam. In Sydney it's to avoid the traffic plus I had a job at the time so on the road at 5, home ~ 7:00-ish. In Vietnam it's because of the heat plus my cat likes her brekkie at 5am😂
Class - remember meeting Elliot in the bunch of a 3/4 race near Cambridge 7 years ago. Only guy up for a chat and a laugh in a pack full of weirdly serious 40 year old blokes 😂 Big up palace crits: no better place to learn how to race a bike
the powerweave bibs are phenomenal.. I reach for those first (weather permitting) If you can find shadow arm and leg warmers those are my goto when it's not quite cold enough for tights . Also merino wool baselayers are where it's at.
The chat about start times for group rides is a bit hilarious - maybe the 6am start is popular because people have regular 9-5 jobs during the week, and other commitments on weekends?? Also avoiding the traffic and heat as others have pointed out - rolling out during peak hour is mental 😂
Not sure what ride he is referring to. As a London based rider, the only group rides I know if here start at 5:30. One exception is a ride in RIchmond Park that starts at 7:30 but the park ride is relatively safe from a traffic perspective.
+1 for the light weight full length bib tights. 100% a must in spring and fall in Vancouver! I have to admit that I didn't think I was going to be all that interested in this one... But, this was a great podcast! Really interesting. Thank you!
Great interview - nice relaxed and honest discussion ….. I’d only dispute the group ride start times in the UK - anything later than 8am is frowned upon from my experience (have raced Nationals on road and track)
I rode RADL GRVL on 35mm Conti AS TR Slicks at 35psi (63kg rider). I didn’t puncture but lost minutes on the descents…. It was the right tyre until we hit 88km and started descending….. that rocky descent was new this year and I wouldn’t have run slicks if I knew how bad it was.
Jesse Coyle and the mudguards…. Got a funny story about this. It was in 2018 and I worked in Belrose. We did Akuna twice a week. I was reasonably fit and did Akuna anti-clockwise climb in 9min. One day some dude who clearly needed a haircut 3 weeks ago with mudguards on his bike overtook us right at the bottom of the climb. Since I definitely don’t get beaten on my favourite hill by a guy with mudguards I went on the move…. He put a minute into me that day. Don’t judge a guy by his mudguards.
really liked elliots insight into cycling + cycling influencers etc. I was not familiar with him at all. Love his training methods, and like that he picked the c68! Neat to have a younger person pick this bike. Chris, you can get into this vibe! You obsess too much on marginal gains! Vibes dude!
Being from NZ I usually go on my weekend rides at around 1pm in the afternoon. In Winter because I like to wait for it to warm up to its maximum temp( around 12C usually which is much nicer than 1 to 5C at 8/9am. And in summer it very rarely gets over 30C so is still quite nice. Stevie Williams passed me up one of the climbs the other day when he was training here before the tdu, which I found interesting so more on pro-hours. Although when in Sunshine Coast(only place I've ridden in Oz) I went riding at 5/6am every day to beat the heat as it got too hot much past 8am. Also the sun rises straight up into the sky being nearer the equator so its much lighter much earlier. In NZ its a lot lower in sky so gets light much more gradually. So I can see why Aussies go cycling early generally- I would if I lived over there. But yeah when I did this smallish charity ride/race in Buderim I did notice everyone seemed to have top of the line new bikes, which isn't the same in NZ, where its a lot more mixed with old and new.
Winter gear for 9-15 C, thermal bibs? Thats barely arm warmer temp. Love the pod. Cheers from Canada. Also just wear regular bibs and pull on some running tights on top 1/3 the price of long bibs.
Dual carriageway TTs are less dangerous than many standard road TTs; traffic still passes at the same speed but have a separate lane to do it and you don't have to face it coming at you on the wrong side due to impatience.

I have Rapha, Assos and Santini. For bibs / winter tights and winter jackets I rate Assos and Santini way above Rapha, for jerseys it's not so clear cut and I go by colour / sale prices, baselayers I go Assos because they last so long with many washes. The lower tier Assos are as good as mid to high tier in other brands, in Santini and Rapha the lower tier is a long way behind their top level gear in my opinion.
Very similar to you! - tops are pure fashion, what ever fits and I like the look of. Bibs are Assos just tried their Millie GTS short (which is 2nd bottom of their line up) and they are amazing value and better than anything i've tried from the other brands in terms of quality. Base layers: the ex-assos R&D guy started the company Q36.5 and I'm very impressed by them (the shorts just didn't fit me very well) - I've yet to wear out one of these base layers and the versatility in winter they give you is amazing. It's all good fun!
