Microbiologist here. 90% rubbing alcohol doesn’t work to kill bacteria, rather 70% specifically is most effective. The issue with 90% is that it evaporates prior to disrupting the cell wall of the microorganisms, meaning the bacteria will look definitely affected by the alcohol but it won’t kill them because the barrier that protects them remains intact. Higher percent alcohol isn’t more lethal to bugs, it’s actually less effective than 50% alcohol.

for those wondering, how it works is gram negative bacteria, which is the majority of common bacteria, has a thin protective layer made of peptidoglycan. alcohol can penetrate this layer and destroy the genetic material within the cell and effectively destroy it. gram positive bacteria have a THICK peptidoglycan layer that cannot be penetrated by common sanitizers such as alcohol. they can usually only be killed by extreme heat or strong acids/bases. that is why rubbing alcohol and household cleaners say “kills 99% of bacteria” because they can’t sell strong enough chemicals to kill gram positive bacteria seeing as it could cause severe chemical burns. this is also why hospital instruments are sanitized with both chemicals and heat.
