So instead of mowing the lawn I just need an army of turtles?

Our friend Waffles the sulcata tortoise (a MUCH bigger species than me!) does just that! His humans don't need to mow their lawn anymore! Well, actually, Waffles was so good at mowing the lawn that they don't have grass on their lawn anymore...
You can follow the adventures of Waffles and his tortoise and bearded dragon siblings over at ruclips.net/user/WafflesTort ! Waffles also posts every day on his Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr!

I love how as soon as Kirby sees the dandelions he/she goes into super nom mode! So cute! 💜 PS- Will Kirby grow larger or is this his/her full size?

I don’t know if this helps but it’s a male from what I understand , so I’d say it’s almost full grown, but I wouldn’t say he can’t grow more. I have a female Russian tortoise, like the one Kirby is and they can grow much bigger. Adult Male’s shell is about 6 inches long, while a female’s is 8.

@@thenightmare7316 Thanks for the info! It helped a lot! I've seen Russian tortoises for sale at Pet Stores and they were usually quite pricey. What's the life-span on them? Sorry for all the questions..I just love animals and love to learn. I've only ever had reptiles. :)

@Saul Lockyer (Disgybl 2019) I was thinking at least 50 years. Thank you! :)

I am indeed a Russian tortoise (aka Horsfield's tortoise), and I am indeed a boy (confirmed as of last month: thewhimsyturtle.tumblr.com/tagged/gender-reveal/chrono)! Also correct that my species lives for a long time. We have heard that Russian tortoises can live to over 100 years old in captivity! So if all goes well, I will far outlive Mom.
Size-wise, my shell is currently 4.5 inches long, so I have more growing to do but probably not an awful lot more. I am small for my age because I got super sick as a baby (thankfully I am all healthy now!), so it remains to be seen whether I will always stay on the smaller side or eventually catch up. Either way, the answer is clearly MOAR NOMS!!
Last but not least: If you are considering getting a Russian tortoise like me, please be careful about buying from a pet store. Many pet stores, especially large chains, sell wild caught tortoises. Wild caught is bad for the individual tortoise (imagine the stress of being kidnapped and surrounded by loud scary giants), the species (every individual lost means lost genetic diversity and future generations of offspring), and even for you (the stress of capture and new environments means higher vet bills). We strongly encourage buying from a reputable breeder or adopting from a rescue! We also highly recommend russiantortoise.net for excellent, well researched, and up to date care advice for Russian torts. It's our go-to!

@@thewhimsyturtle Aww, I’m sorry you were sick as a baby. Glad you’re better! Thank you SO much for the info! Very glad you got to nom some delicious dandelions. And thank you for educating on the down-side of wild caught animals. Always adopt or buy from a reputable breeder. :) Thanks again, Kirby and Mom! Have a great day!
