CharmingHomer The flex is not even bad and the trackpad has already had a firmware update. None of your reasons are deal breakers honestly. But nitpicking is the name of the game. My only complaint is needing to remove the motherboard, but again it’s not terribly difficult.
i used a macbook pro for 4 years, used the trackpad a lot. I just got a gs65 and have used it for a couple weeks now. the touch works like a charm i don't really feel a difference tbh. It's not that big of a deal.
CharmingHomer wow. It's like you took to heart literally the only minor flaws this laptop has.. the flex is only at the top where you aren't really going to press 😂
I know it's been a while but I thought I would clear up a point. GSync doesn't work *at all* past the refresh rate of the monitor. So that comment doesn't make any sense. All that GSync, or any adaptive sync screen, does is adjust the monitors refresh rate to the FPS of the full-screen application *up to* 144hz in this case. So if your game is running at 130fps it will set the refresh rate to 130hz. This removes screen tearing and dropped visual frames. As soon as you exceed 144 frames any adaptive sync is useless as you're running past what the screen can draw. 60fps+ only matters on a 60hz display per the aforementioned functionality. Now, regular v-sync is different, it will cap the frame rate at the monitors refresh rate. Usually adaptive sync (GSync or Freesync) work together with v-sync to ensure that the display is always outputting exactly what it needs to, no more, no less. To summarize, unless this Laptop can run all games at 144fps all the time, some form adaptive sync is useful for getting rid of screen tearing and frame stuttering caused by the monitor running ahead of the gfx chip at 144hz. I don't understand why they would put a 144hz panel in there with no form of adaptive sync if games are only getting up to 70fps.
That's because if they did that it would cause the battery to last much less than the usual 6-7 hours I get from my workloads, which I am extremely grateful for. I think anyone who is looking for a laptop values portability and battery life over minimal screen-tearing when playing games.
Hey Dave I just wanna say you are a huge influence on me. I bought the Asus Zephyrus GTX1080 soon after your review and I have to say my experience is 100% accurate as what you described. You are a very technical and objective youtuber. I find myself enjoying your content more and more. Thank you for your awesome work and hope to break 2m soon!
Hey Dave, Just bought the RTX 2060 version the other day from Best Buy while it was on sale for $1650. I have a pretty beefy desktop at my house but I travel a lot and wanted something I could game on, and since my Dell Vostro from like 6 years ago was starting to get long in the tooth I pulled the trigger on this. I love that it is subtle enough that I can use it at work and in Masters classes and it doesn't scream GAMER! The battery is better than expected, I can be away from a wall for a little over 6 to 6 1/2 hours without an issue. The performance is more than adequate, but I will likely be upgrading to dual channel ram and adding another SSD soon. All in all, I'm very happy with it, and your review was instrumental in me buying this laptop, so I suppose I should say thank you, and MSI should thank you as well haha. Thanks
@Moh_SplodzZ Haven't noticed anything. My one gripe is that I will have to upgrade the ram, since it comes with 16gigs single channel which cripples FPS in certain games. Battlefield V, for example, I'm pegged at 60 FPS, but have seen that with dual channel, I'd be getting closer to 100 with max settings Edit: scratch that, I’m a dumbass. Somewhere in my battlefield settings it was locked at 60fps, switched it to 144 and now I’m getting in the 70s-80s on high settings.
I have the 1060 variant, and mine came in as dual channel 2666mhz 2x8 sticks. Just swapped those out for 2x16gb sticks. I’d assume your 2060 variant would be the same being already dual channel. Its just the earlier models were single channel.
@@oppaoppa9092 Not really sure, I keep it plugged in a lot since thats the only way it utilizes the 2060 (uses integrated graphics to save battery when unplugged). I actually haven't had the battery completely drain even once while I've had it, as the battery is about 6 hours and I'm usually only away from an outlet for 4-5 hours at most.
The reason gs65 hardware customizaton access difficult maybe because they make the mb layout facing up, not like any other laptop brand usually do. Actually its pretty good idea, so they could make the air intake grill on top not at the bottom so it won't be a problem if you put the laptop on your lap or on a not solid surface, it won't muffled the intake.
I work at a school and students are always asking for this one, but the biggest negative didn't get pointed out here, because you couldn't get into the rear cover. The reverse motherboard makes most of the hardware inaccessible without pulling the whole board. Couple that with MSI only selling a 1 year warranty and we just can't recommend this to college students who aren't always the most careful with their laptops.
Is MSI's RNA and customer service decent? I've been deciding over MSI vs Gigabyte vs Asus for the new 6 core max-q laptops and I think RMA/Customer Service is the deciding factor.
im having msi gs65 and for 6 month i have keyboard issue. and when i searching for it in internet. there's more like me. dissapointed with $2000++ MSI Product
MSI is horrible, I live in Canada so service will definitely be slower than the US. Quality, Customer Service =bad. My MSI GS 63’s motherboard died in 1 year and 3 months. Got it replaced. 8 months later, mother board died again. This time, MSI got my laptop and tried to cheat me out for not replacing the motherboard, claiming physical damage and bull crap like that. I kept my laptop in mint condition, the plastic wrap from the beginning was still there. Carry it in case whenever i am out ( hardly out), I treated it with such care. Finally the agreed to not charge me for the mother board, which they wanted $1400 for, the laptop was $1800 when new in 2016. But they claimed that my wifi antenna is broken, my wifi was working perfectly before I sent so I am sure that they must have break it and tried to charge me $100, which I had no choice but agreed to pay. Always though Razer was the worst, but MSI is right behind.
XVI I never owned razer but my friend bought a razer blade and it broke after one and half year. But luckily he bought it at the microsoft store with extended warranty so they refunded him.
Just got this bad boy for $1000 flat because it was an open box. Previous owner had it for less than 24 hours and it was discounted because he lost the manual. Super happy with it.
A comparison video would be nice but in my opinion they are not worth it to buy. Unless you have tons of cash to blow or OK with ending up with a $2000 paperweight. MSI and Razer laptops have hardware problems more than they should. Lots of horror stories with Razer but I personally haven’t experienced it myself. My personal experience with MSI GS63 laptop was horrible. My laptop had 2 years warranty. My motherboard died after 1 year and 3 months, got it replaced, and than 8 months later it died again, right before the warranty was out. I bought it a retailer, and around the first year they took care it themselves instead of sending it to MSI. The second time, they sent it out to MSI, MSI tried to cheated me out to not replace the motherboard, the retailer had to fight for it to replace it. My wifi was working fine and they said the wifi antenna broke, and wanted to charge me $100 for it. The probably break it in the process and claim i broke it. I kept my laptop in mint condition and always carry it in a case so I had a hard time trusting them but ended up paying anyway. So MSI customer service is no better than Razer.
xze i have a gs70 stealth 2015, and i’ve had a constant problems. it’s a good laptop no lie, but it’s not one i would buy again, a dell xps would be a dream laptop for me. my stealth has had the paint wear off, hinge break(the hinges are a big problem with msi), driver issues, and my boot ssd switches from taking 1 minute to boot to 10 second boots at will. the razerblade is even worse than msi, they’re a literal paperweight because of their thermals
Bought this a year or so ago. It is great from a performance standpoint. It looks awesome as well. *However*, the build quality is horrible. The pressure required to click on the track pad feels very inconsistent. Worst part is that the audio jack on mine started having issues few months ago and the warranty is already up. Definitely a hardware issue that is *very* common if you look around online. Tons and tons of posts of others having the same problem.. Bottom line I see why Dave gave this a great review after only spending a short time with it, but in the long term there are definitely more reliable and better quality laptops out there for the price..
I've loved this laptop so its hard to say but you're right on. I've had this unit for about 3 years and after about 2 years of light use the hinges plastic screw housing just sheared off. I still use it daily but I've had to glue the hinges multiple times. I have a setup with a monitor now because i don't want to move it anymore!
This is my first gaming laptop and I love it. Only 3 problems: one, the lid is curved from the right side, 2 mines has Ethernet issues. It won’t connect to a wired cord. I have to turn off my PC, connect the cord, then turn it on for wired gaming (my home WiFi is trash), which is insanely annoying. And 3, this thing gets insanely hot. Other than that, solid laptop.
Okay what the hell is up with every RUclips and the stupid bell notification? At least Dave did it in a subtle way rather than some others who put 'PRESS THE BELL ICON NOW PLS' In the intro of every single video
2:56 “This one is very difficult. I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but I couldn’t get in there.” *chuckle* -Dave Lee 3:20 “I’m sure you can get in there, it’s just not an easy thing.” -Dave Lee
Kawvy From my experience MSI laptop stay pretty cool for a thin and light but everything else, never buy an MSI again. Here my story: Don’t!! I bought a MSI GS63, mother board died in 1 year 3 months, got it replaced, 8 months later, mother board died again. The second time MSI tried to cheated me out, saying the mother board died because of physical damage, such BS. They wanted to charge me $1400 for that and the laptop cost $1800 new. I kept my laptop in mint condition, even the plastic cover from when I bought it was still there. I always carried it in a padded case, because that thing is fragile as hell. After telling them about how much care I have taken to protect my laptop, they didn’t charge me for mother board replacement. Then they told me my wifi antenna is broken, probably such BS, they probably break it, but it was only $100 and I really don’t have a choice.
Paid a hefty premium for this laptop, after 5 months of content creation I am experiencing hinge problems and the chassis is bent. Keep in mind that I take good care of it and use it on a daily basis
Yup, same. Msi needs yet another year or two to perfect this chassis. In addition, at 20C ambient temp, the gpu easily hits 80-85C under full load, not the 69C Dave showed, I am unsure why.
Just ordered one, getting it tomorrow. I went for the 32gb with the 1070 (maxQ). I looked at the higher spec GPUs, but for what I do/play, it wasn't worth the extra $$ for a 2060, 1660ti or higher with 32gb ram and LESS SSD storage. I would rather have the ram, lots of SSD storage and keep it in budget. And I like the size is kept down with the maxQ.
I've been wondering if this could be the kind of laptop that I would get. College will start soon but I'm very new when it comes to PC's so I dunno if this could support recent fps gaming, oof.
Frazzle Face me too. I’m about to sell my school laptop & gaming desktop to combine them into this one power station for school. I think it’s gonna be an amazing purchase
So the weird thing, I ran my Spyder several times on the screen. I got 97-98% each time. It seems almost impossible but I can only report what the Spyder colorimeter was reading. I noticed that other reviewers also had really high adobe RGB values like 95%+ It is a very good screen but maybe the AHVA panel is throwing off the colorimeter reading
Dave Lee No you're probably right on. The last AHVA panel I had was the same way and it was noticibly more colourful. The resellers probably just have the specs wrong (like they typically do). I am curious now if this is a different panel than the one in the new Zephyrus. I figured all these new laptops were using the same panel but the Zephyrus claims to have an IPS panel with NTSC 72%. It's probably the same panel as the GL503. Did you happen to get the panel ID number on the GS65? Really looking forward to reviewing this one!

Hi Dave, do you have any problem when gaming on this laptop, in particular, Overwatch? I've only got my hands on the laptop for one day so I test my only game Overwatch but I experience pretty bad FPS drop and stuttering. I tried changing profile to performance in the MSI game centre software and crank up the fan but still experience the same FPS drop and stutter. The game setting is on low for everything, as I play competitively so I don't care much about graphics for a fast moving game like overwatch. I played on a 240hz Benq monitor connected via HDMI but I can hardly get FPS over 140. When the FPS drop happens it goes down to around 100 and the game stutters. My previous laptop, an Asus GL502 with GTX 1060, easily runs at 160+FPS albeit I get the occasional thermal throttle due to poor heating design. I have another issue where the Nivida control panel will only detect the Benq monitor but not the laptop display. Whereas the Intel graphics setting would only detect the laptop display and not the monitor. On the windows display setting, I can see both displays and set to extend to these displays. Do you have the same issues and suggestions on how to fix it? Appreciate if anyone can help, I spend a lot of money on this laptop and it's disappointing that it's not even close to the performance of my last gen Asus ROG GL502. I know the hardware is more than capable as my friend got the Gigabyte Aero 15x v8 which pretty much have the same hardware but he has only tested on the 144hz laptop display. However compared to the Asus GTX1060 the performance gain isn't that much, maybe 10%. For those looking to get this laptop, I agree with a lot of what Dave has said, the build quality is good, very thin, light, portable (relative to my Asus GL502 obviously), and looks great. Screen colour is good, the keyboard feels good although I feel it's a bit shallow, but that's just me. However, compared to the Aero 15 the keyboard feels slightly better, the aero 15 feels slightly mushy. It runs at a much cooler temperature compare to my Asus and similar to Aero 15. The fan can get loud though. The CPU is much faster than the 7th Gen for sure.
I think this thermals in this video are a lie man. That's impossible. And your laptop throttles, that's why you're getting fps drops. Can you please run any rendering program that uses cpu? Install gpu-z and see the temps and voltages. If the graphs look like combs, it's throttling. Please post your results here.

I think this is my next laptop when the next generation of gpu comes out I currently use the gs60 with gtx 970m, not offering hdd is almost a deal breaker I intend to pay 2400sh or even more but having less than 2tb internal storage is really bothering me I already upgraded my gs60 to 2tb hdd and now I can breath, but 512 gb is too low for me and 2tb ssd are too expensive to justify my use which is mostly games and browsing
I have it, it runs literally every game on ultra over 100fps. Rainbow on max gets around 120, fortnite epic settings gets around 90, no game goes below 60 or even near it
Shaurya Nain very nice, little flex, the screen is nice, it feels just premium if that makes since. I’ll be posting some gameplay soon of testing with the laptop, it’s a monster
@@oy45um Absolutely it does, MSI's control center uses an automatic fan setting which allows it to easily cool the laptop if it ever reaches high temps, which normally it doesn't. And if fan noise is a problem for you, control center's got you covered as it has different presets for meetings, gaming, and just casual settings. It's an incredible laptop.
Hmm not sure about Linus' numbers but I use the same battery test loop that I've used for all my laptops. Mix of Reddit, RUclips, excel use. Exact time was 5hr 51m. Screen at 250nits.
Given the history of previous laptops from all manufacturers, and if what Dave states is true and it is indeed an 82Wh battery, then only 2-3 hours doesn't seem right considering it's only a 1080p panel without gsync (even if it is 144hz), 5h seems more plausible, more than that then I guess it depends on brightness levels, keyboard lights etc.
Really like this one. I hope this black and gold color scheme spreads to more of their lineup. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for your awesome work and hope to break 2m soon!
good placement for AC connector. Cant wait for the new model next year and AC plug located in the middle of the keyboard!
Stocklee Imagine it being inside the laptop itself.
I guess they had to put it there for whatever reason. It's really bugging me as it should all rightys.
You should be cast as Tintin, and Lew as Captain Haddock 😂

True
Hey Dave,
Just bought the RTX 2060 version the other day from Best Buy while it was on sale for $1650.
Thanks
Kevin does it thermal throttle or heat up alot
@Moh_SplodzZ Haven't noticed anything. My one gripe is that I will have to upgrade the ram, since it comes with 16gigs single channel which cripples FPS in certain games. Battlefield V, for example, I'm pegged at 60 FPS, but have seen that with dual channel, I'd be getting closer to 100 with max settings
Edit: scratch that, I’m a dumbass.
@@jeffdmsl No unfortunately, I ran a hardware scan and it is indeed single channel 16gb
0:58 Now Dave can instantly remove marks from his laptop in a single move.
Showe the secrets of your dark magic!
Is it just me or should this new aesthetic be used for all their laptops??
50+ likes on a Dave2D video, momma I made it
Yes please it's amazing
I think it should! This is way sleeker and I do like its looks.
Yes, except the speakers place.
Always though Razer was the worst, but MSI is right behind.
xze what’s your experience with razer? I was thinking about getting the new razer blade 15.
XVI I never owned razer but my friend bought a razer blade and it broke after one and half year. But luckily he bought it at the microsoft store with extended warranty so they refunded him.
xze ohhh okay thanks
Just got this bad boy for $1000 flat because it was an open box. Previous owner had it for less than 24 hours and it was discounted because he lost the manual. Super happy with it.
One word.. IT'S AWESOME! and is certainly my next laptop. Thanks Dave.
3:19 that's what she said
old but gold
Compare the Razer blade (2019) and msi gs65 (2019)
Stanislav Knyazev lol what’s wrong with 1080p 144hz/240hz or OLED 4K?
blade is wildly overpriced
xze i have a gs70 stealth 2015, and i’ve had a constant problems. it’s a good laptop no lie, but it’s not one i would buy again, a dell xps would be a dream laptop for me. my stealth has had the paint wear off, hinge break(the hinges are a big problem with msi), driver issues, and my boot ssd switches from taking 1 minute to boot to 10 second boots at will. the razerblade is even worse than msi, they’re a literal paperweight because of their thermals
TuxKat their thermals are pretty good lol?
The Screen Of This Laptop Curved At 3:49

Looks a bit like lens distortion to me.
Mr. GareebTheGamer yeah there are some laptops that have curved screens

Thank you for doing this review! I just got this laptop and I already love it!
Victor Boesen how is it now a year later?
Dave you are the nicest guy on youtube, not attitude just facts and such a pleasure to watch. thanks for another great video!
Dave i'd like to say that u r really one of the best reviewers i've ever seen in my life
Such an amazing and detailed review. Inspired by you.
Just bought this laptop and I'm hella excited for it to arrive!
Other than that, solid laptop.
why do you all release these videos when I am about to sleep? T_T now i need to watch this with the linus one too
allaricluy lol because he lives in the other side of the planet
Linus says that the g-sync hardware is inside and that it could be activated unofficially
But where u live tho?
the UK

Okay what the hell is up with every RUclips and the stupid bell notification? At least Dave did it in a subtle way rather than some others who put 'PRESS THE BELL ICON NOW PLS' In the intro of every single video
Do a video on the dell G Series laptops; they are really good!
Finally after 2 years again I am seeing this review but in my Msi GS65😊 Thank you Dave❤

Zephyrus m and Aero 15x are objectively better
Except for its poor thermals, keyboard ergonomics, and speakers
Edit: Referring to only the aero 15x here
Kawvy shut up
@@nortonfamily6711 but need to shell out few more real bucks for em. :P
Kawvy From my experience MSI laptop stay pretty cool for a thin and light but everything else, never buy an MSI again.
Here my story:
Don’t!!
Just bought mine. Excited!!!
I use the 6 cores for parallelizing neural networks training, and that GPU is awesome.
Love the reviews. Best laptop in your opinion for 1500-1600 or less for moderate gaming and work use ?
I just got one :D :D :D SO EXCITED
Paid a hefty premium for this laptop, after 5 months of content creation I am experiencing hinge problems and the chassis is bent. Keep in mind that I take good care of it and use it on a daily basis
What about the battery life? how many hours are you getting?
@@mikenight3096 6hrs on 1080p video stream. 1hrs 30 mins gaming
Yup, same. Msi needs yet another year or two to perfect this chassis. In addition, at 20C ambient temp, the gpu easily hits 80-85C under full load, not the 69C Dave showed, I am unsure why.
You can actually remove that logo with nail polish remover / acetone, instead of getting a skin. Works like a charm.
How has this worked out for you as a purchase? Would love some feedback
Nice Review Dave. aRGB 97%? Is that legit? All other manufacturers with that same screen are saying 72% NTSC which is roughly the same % in aRGB
So the weird thing, I ran my Spyder several times on the screen. I got 97-98% each time. It seems almost impossible but I can only report what the Spyder colorimeter was reading. I noticed that other reviewers also had really high adobe RGB values like 95%+
It is a very good screen but maybe the AHVA panel is throwing off the colorimeter reading
@@Dave2D I'm such a huge fan of yours from Nigeria. I have been watching and liking most of your videos for about 2 years now, way before you hit 1 million subs 😉 and hoping that someday, I would be able to save enough to purchase a gaming laptop of my own. Hi Dave, great review! May I ask if you know the MSI laptop Thunderbolt USB C support power delivery? Can it be charged using USB C chargers?
Aequitaserz I think it does support but it's useless as thunderbolt charging is capped at 100 W and this beast needs much more than that to charge while gaming
Linus says that the g-sync hardware is inside and that it could be activated unofficially
Just wait for Nvidia to certificate that new 1080p 144hz panel. They will "unlock" g-sync with drivers update.
I like Linus but his voice hurts me 😧
Waited 3 months for this to become available at B&H, today it did and Friday i receive it in the mail.
Love how the touchpad is centered with the home row. And no keypad means the home row is not shoved to the left. Could be a good dev machine.

hey Dave! can you please tell us if there are any backlight bleed on this beast?
CoffeeAddictGuy I own the msi gs65 and at least on my unit there is almost no backlight bleed. It is only noticeable when the screen is completely black and the room is also dark. Otherwise you will never notice the bleed because it is so little.
This is a very nice looking laptop. I saw an ad on Instagram and was quite awed. Doesn't look like gaudy crap like their other laptops.

Or the 2080 maxq lmao
Daniel Huang I'm still waiting for some reply
I think this thermals in this video are a lie man. That's impossible. And your laptop throttles, that's why you're getting fps drops.
Can you please run any rendering program that uses cpu? Install gpu-z and see the temps and voltages. If the graphs look like combs, it's throttling. Please post your results here.
Try undervolting?
my laptop has the same problems, I fixed it by serviced it at the service center requesting for it and for thermal replace
Daniel Huang if you’re having problems running over watch then there’s something wrong..this laptop can run top of the line games EASILY.
The only reason why I still watch Dave is because of the entertaining hand gestures

Just use an external drive. I've ran games off my WD passport and it runs just as well~
replace your old 2TB HDD in to the new laptop if you want to buy it with small SSD capacity
Yeah. I need at least 1tb and i don’t even have that many games. I do use a few autodesk softwares which do use quite a bit of memory.
review the new msi gs65 with the i7 9th gen gtx 1660 ti .. pls
I have it, it runs literally every game on ultra over 100fps. Rainbow on max gets around 120, fortnite epic settings gets around 90, no game goes below 60 or even near it
Not Kodex how’s the build quality of your machine ?

Shaurya Nain very nice, little flex, the screen is nice, it feels just premium if that makes since. I’ll be posting some gameplay soon of testing with the laptop, it’s a monster
@@simpy968 I am considering to buy this laptop, but my biggest concern is the cooling. Since it's a very thin laptop does it have good cooling ?
@@oy45um Absolutely it does, MSI's control center uses an automatic fan setting which allows it to easily cool the laptop if it ever reaches high temps, which normally it doesn't. And if fan noise is a problem for you, control center's got you covered as it has different presets for meetings, gaming, and just casual settings. It's an incredible laptop.
I saw LTT's video and they said the battery life was like 2-3 hours, not sure who to believe, any opinions?
jinwei ooi Linus doesn't do actually battery tests he uses benchmark software to test the battery
i see, thanks
Hmm not sure about Linus' numbers but I use the same battery test loop that I've used for all my laptops. Mix of Reddit, RUclips, excel use. Exact time was 5hr 51m. Screen at 250nits.
Ok, thanks for the info!
Looks to be a really beautiful and balanced laptop, gonna buy when it comes to stock in my country.
