Here's something interesting that I found on the Wikipedia for Indie Cross. If you look carefully at the crack in the right window while the area is lit up in Bad Time, you can see a faint silhouette of W.D. Gaster.

I'm willing to bet that the main reason that Devil's Gambit is the most popular is because it's the easiest. By that I mean, it's the only one that most people were actually able to finish, and because of that, it's the only one they heard all of.
