Looking down on this, the reason why Jason didn't work and was removed after the 1st season was because he felt like a part of the audience, laughing to all jokes Hammond and Jezza threw out, and lacked the sort of charisma and precense what May has. When May arrived, he brought in that sort of sarcastic nerdy side of things, and fell perfectly into the group with his quirky and unique personality.
I dont know what work Jason had done before this but Clarkson and hammond had both been presenters before hand - Jason more likely didnt want to do the full time share of presenting and scripting (also perhaps looks although I wouldnt bet on it), and when the blithering idiot came in, not only was he someone to laugh at but since he went on full time doing more work and being a bigger part of the show, there was no need for jason to be on for news segments anymore Or he just didnt want to work for the bbc/found other employment and we're overthinking it Still, even in this barebones format here, a million times better than the shit reboot after a manager/director/whatever got what was coming to him
When Clarkson was fired from Top Gear, May and Hammond went too, then later all joined the Grand Tour. I think this is because Top Gear / TGT is only marginally about cars - and became more about three mates making fun of one another and going on adventures. The uniqueness is in their relationship together. I really couldn't imagine Jason of S1 being one of the three going on the Africa special or travelling through Africa in dune buggies, can you?
@evan williams I'll add an addendum to that. It was also back when people could laugh at jokes that might be "bad". Jeremy has always been like this. Nothing will ever change. And I don't want him to. He's fucking hilarious.
@@TheRealCake Apparently so... it was a tense situation at one point and clarkson and Andy Wilman wanted hammond to stay but the end and to be fair it was the right move.

At the beginning of series 2 James was similar. I'm sure if they kept Jason on he would have become more involved.
