"It's not about the note that you play but about being able to make the audience lean forward in their chair and feel their heart beat a little faster..." Brilliantly stated! You sir, are a poet.
Hi Joe. Thanks a lot. I'm 54 yo and for the first time in my life I'm learning play piano and improve my raw english. So your videos are very helpfull for me. Fantastic. Thanks again.
This is my favorite piano piece of all time and you did a fantastic job explaining it. I like that you made sure to point out that this is a song meant to be played SLOW. A lot of people seem to miss that very obvious point even though it says right there on the music sheet "SLOW and PAINFUL". It really bugs me when pianists try to play it allegro and all "happy-go-lucky" type feel. It's not a happy-go-lucky song so PLAY IT WITH PAIN AND SADNESS IN YOUR HEART GODDAMMIT!
Really appreciate this series Joe. I'm 41 yo, has just decided to learn piano, and this video has helped me significantly, providing both joy and motivation to continue learning.
Thank you monsieur, this song really breaks my feelings and tears are not far from falling, I feel like I forgot something so important in my life that inside of me someone is screaming when I listen to this song.
I've been teaching this to one of my students for a while now and I always like to reference other pianists to confirm I'm approaching a piece properly. I have to say that you're one of the very few who play it the way it's supposed to be played, with ONLY the left hand playing the chords, as it is written. Hard to believe most performances/tutorials here on youtube miss that entirely.
i have this app that monitors my sleep using the accelerometer on my phone, and this is my alarm. a beautiful way to wake up. thank you for putting this up! i cant wait to learn it
Hi Joe....I'm a guitar player, but I'm trying to learn the piano, and this is my first attempt at any piano at all...I've got parts 1 and 2 nailed down fairly well, and now I'm on part 3 of this piece which is taking the longest so far...thanks so much for posting this and it's a great tutorial...I will check out your other tutorials too (actually I've already checked out some of your Coldplay pieces, but am mainly trying to focus on this Satie piece for now)...ok thanks!!
This is awesome!!! I 've learned it right away… Very detailed and taking time showing every pieces of the note… I loved it… Thank you again and God Bless!
Cassidy Glad to help. I'd encourage you to keep using your ears though - always good practice. See if you can line up what you hear with what is written.
Ha, I was working through the beginning of this piece earlier today and I totally thought about that progression from "Old Friends" as I was trying to hash out the beginning of the song. For some reason I was set on using my index finger for the low G and D, not my pinky. I think that will help me a lot to make the change up to the chords. great video!
Thanks for this lecture. Your hands showing and your comments make all the difference for a noob like myself. Also thanks for the SG tip I love that song now (probably the first SG song I really pay attention to).
Thanks for teaching us this hauntingly beautiful song, The Canada Wildlife Service regularly plays it for their educational TV vignettes of the beaver loon and other wildlife.,
Joe, The "broken chord" you speak of is F#minor. So, using the Sustained low D note with the F#m chord gives you the nice Dmaj7th sound. Great Lesson. We ALL appreciate the hard work you do ! Thanks, GS
+Joe Raciti I really love that you chose to do a tutorial on some of erik satie's music. he really is underrated. Do you think you could do some more of his pieces? i'd especially really love if you did je te veux ( i want you) it's one of his more popular tunes and my personal favorite.
SO excited that you did a tutorial on this song! I heard this for the first time a couple of weeks ago on my local classical station. I've been in love ever since. For something similar, look up "Sweden" by C418. Enjoy :). Looking forward to part II!!!
Awesome. That's great. I am waiting for a piece of equipment in the mail to replace a broken part of my recording set up but I'll do my best to get the rest of the tutorials out for this piece soon.
Literally just started learning piano this is so well explained and I love the format. Thanks very much!!! I picked this piece as it's my favourite slow piece. Anyone has suggestions for any good slow standards? Many thanks!
Thank you so much for the instructional video this has helped out a whole bunch on my quest to self-teaching myself to play the piano. Keep up the good videos, you will help so many people. PS. Gymnopédie is pronounced Jeem-no-peh-dee. The end letters of words in French are typically not pronounced.
Hi! Can't wait to play this song im getting my first keyboard (don't worry it's not shit) and im so exited to start jamming with this song anyways just wanted to say thanks for the video
hi Joe, great video btw, I was wondering since you have made tutorials for how to save a life and never say never, if you could make one for syndicate by the fray as it has very good piano in it, keep up the good work!!!!
***** well there are no pedal markings on the music I am using so purists would tell you that I should be using the pedal at all. I would just keep out down the whole time, play slowly, and not play to loudly. Otherwise, use your ears and make your best judgement.
Hey, Joe. Trouble by Coldplay? If you please could do a little tutorial. Its pretty easy song, but I can't work out few sections :/ Hope you can help me :)
Hi Joe, happy holidays I jusy want to say your piano works are simple and amazing and im thankful that you make the videos you do and if I can may I make a request of please, if its not to much trouble to do; My Immortal by Evenecanse, its fine if you cannot I only asked because other tutorials aren't doing it the way you can, its fine if you cannot just keep doing what your doing because you're great at it.
Me too. I really want to learn this so bad. I'm using a Yamaha EZ 30 keyboard and i can't get the aftersound (If you get my point) just like how you play it in your piano. Can you help me please? Or do i have to configure something? Thanks
+Kersean Natividad I'm a complete newcomer to piano, so apologies if I'm completely wrong, but are you talking about the sustain (after you hit a key the note sounds for a few seconds and fades out)? I think you need a sustain footswitch/pedal. I don't have a EZ30 myself, but I had a quick look at the pdf for it and they do seem to be available (they seem to mention Yamaha FC4 or FC5). I can't rule out that there's not a setting on EZ 30 that would do the job but I couldn't find anything on that.
+Dianna Dinh i had the same problem so i kinda stopped learning it last year and then today i randomly decided to learn it again and what helped me was if you count 1-2-3, the 3rd count will always be played alone by the RH. except for the first note of the melody where you only play the LH. tldr; counting 1-2-3 helped me with the loop. hope it helps you too
"It's not about the note that you play but about being able to make the audience lean forward in their chair and feel their heart beat a little faster..."

@@francis72thepro So? Go play Roblox, kid.
I sincerely hope learning the piano is going as well as your English. Good luck and be well.

It's not a happy-go-lucky song so PLAY IT WITH PAIN AND SADNESS IN YOUR HEART GODDAMMIT!
Lol
What alternate universe do you live in where a pianist plays it allegro?
lmao
chill dude, music is art, and art is all about interpretation
LOL!
🤣
Best teacher ever! I can't read music but Joe's tutorials really break things down and make it easy to learn. Thank you!
I'm just attracted to that rubik's cube on top right

WUKONG GOES BANANAS Haha yeah!

I learned the song in 2014 from you, forgot how to play it and now im back for a refresher! great tutorial Joe!
This song has a special place in my heart. Thanks for the tutorial.
I'm learning piano off youtube and this is by far the best youtube channel i've come across! Thanks!
Billy Keane you should also practice sight reading
James_ Trumpeter09 why
Hey how has your piano learning been? I've started self teaching using RUclips and the internet a few weeks ago and I'm struggling
'should always play with some sort of feeling' . You're a great teacher! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I love the atmosphere conveyed by this song. And your tutorial was absolutely flawless

Loved this piece since I was a kid, glad you made this so easy to play.
Personally the only thing I found hard about this song was playing the melody and rhythm at the right speed, I found it really difficult
same!! i keep trying to play it faster than that
Hi Joe....I'm a guitar player, but I'm trying to learn the piano, and this is my first attempt at any piano at all...I've got parts 1 and 2 nailed down fairly well, and now I'm on part 3 of this piece which is taking the longest so far...thanks so much for posting this and it's a great tutorial...I will check out your other tutorials too (actually I've already checked out some of your Coldplay pieces, but am mainly trying to focus on this Satie piece for now)...ok thanks!!

Joe Raciti Are you supposed to lift the sustain pedal after every measure??
***** well there are no pedal markings on the music I am using so purists would tell you that I should be using the pedal at all. I would just keep out down the whole time, play slowly, and not play to loudly. Otherwise, use your ears and make your best judgement.
Hey, Joe. Trouble by Coldplay? If you please could do a little tutorial. Its pretty easy song, but I can't work out few sections :/ Hope you can help me :)
The left hand can be recorded on a DAW track. Frees up the right to master that part.
Do you use weighted keys?

Im having trouble playing the lullaby at the same time as the loop :(.. Any advice?? Thanks
Dianna Dinh Go really slowly and speed up over time as your hands become more comfortable with the parts together.
Thank you :)
