At one point in my life, I was certain this world was headed toward an end, and it was no place to bring children. This song, it's emotions, played a major role in changing my view. It was so loving, warm, and emoted so clearly how real love is, I changed. My heart changed. A few years later, I married. 9 months and two weeks later, my little girl came into this world. She has two brothers. And hearing this song still hits my heart so hard, if not harder. Thanks Brent.
I saw Brent play this live in Charlotte with his daughter by his side. It touched me so that when my son was born, this became his lullaby. No You Are My Sunshine, it was I Will Take You Home. He's 23 and I still belt it out from time to time; so does he.
Goosebumps like Volkswagen's. Brent you were the best the Dead had IMO....again IMO, no BS debate needed here...let the legacy of Brent Mydland live forever.
Umm, Brent was torn to pieces from going through a painful divorce - and the thoughts of being separated from his lovely family/daughter were just too much for him, like so many, he self medicated = it was a mistake, not a plan.......you might consider toning down the judgments till you walk in someone else's shoes.... Peace be with you, yours and theirs too... TDK
I saw Brent with the Dead in 1990 after that I did 1 show with Bruce Hornsby on keyboards but that was it for me after 5 years of East coast tours I was done. He's always been my favorite member. 💓 I didn't really get it till 30 years later but now that I. Do it's even more sad. Love you Brent. I self medidicate too. I'm sure if I'd been in his place I could see how this could of happened. Rest my brother.
From a man that loves Brent I ask with respect in mind....is this why or how he ended up doing down that path ? No judgement given what you said it makes a bit more sense to me
@@JosephKeenanisme 😐 I assume you have never had your children used like pawns in a game of pain and misery it's a multi generational pain hope you never understand
Gosh, this song always makes me tear up, and cry so sweetly. The Grateful Dead gave Heaven's Rock Band three great keyboardists and singers. Bless you, Brent, and thank you for your music-- your heart and soul too good for this world.
My Daddy used to sing this to me when I was a little girl. I'm all grown up now, with a little girl of my own, and every time I hear this song I still cry.
Amazing Pic. There is nothing like the relationship between a Father and his little girl. The Dead were amazing with Brent and as Phil said they never really caught the flame very often after Brent passed. As the Beats said, nothing good lasts.
My Daughter...Jessica was barely 2 years old when I heard this song on the radio (sitting in the car with her in a car seat) after they announced Brent had died...I cried....and still do........ every time I hear this
God I how I remember this show so very well, so much energy, strength and community. God its what The WORLD NEEDS NOW. Real Love... I miss you RIDERS, NFA ..
Now that I have a lil girl... This song tears me up when I hear it. It's become my daughter's & I song... just hold her & dance slowly to it. Simply beautiful... Thanks Brent for such a meaningful song, RIP. Forever Dead... Always Grateful... Peace
I've been there so many times with my little girl .... she's all grown up now graduated from college and out in the world on her own but she'll always be my little girl and I will always hold so dear those precious moments when she was so young and I held her with all my love as I gathered her in my arms and chased away her fears . Brent had a way of getting right into your soul and bringing all your feelings to the surface . So loved and so missed may he rest in peace . I hope that somewhere in the ever after Brent Jerry pigpen Vince and Keith are jamming giving all that therein lies joy and a grateful smile carried on the ripples of cosmic waves forevermore. May peace be with us all.
Wow this photo 😭🤣😏 I have 2 daughters and can't imagine them being without me. I cry Everytime I hear this. I have 2 sons too, though, nothing like having like daughters. Brent's vocals and playing were perfect. Rip Brent
this song (with just a few word changes) was 1 of my favorite to sing my son to sleep with when he was little. worked like a charm every time! RIP Brent, you & your songs are still thought of & missed!
This makes me cry. I can remember being at a show my my hubby and he played this and Norm had tears streaming down his face thinking about his little girl.
Man I always choke up when hearing this. I have two girlsand a granddaugter. I would kill for them in two seconds, the loves of my life. RIP Brent and Jerry I will always be listening forever and ever.
a friend of mine was discussing this song before a show....he didnt like it at all... well of course the dead played it that night.....and he had tears in his eyes...great song.....just great...
So lucky to have seen a few versions of this up and down the east coast tours. Last time seeing Brent was in Noblesville, Ind. Always thought the band was just hitting some strides again during the last couple of Brent's years with them. Getting tighter, bringing out all the oldies, etc. Remember the video screens showing pics of Brent's kids and how he always had one of them propped on his keyboard. You just knew he always had them in his thoughts while on the road. Miss you Brent, it was fun.
I remember how special being at this show was....when the crowd responded to I Will Take You Home just gently rocking back and forth, like everyone just kind of KNEW they were experiencing something magical -- just didn't realize the depth till a few months later....like Brent was saying "goodbye"..... may the four winds blow you safely home, Brent....RIP
I wanted to play this at my dad's funeral but my sister didn't know what the grateful Dead where about. I begged her to just listen to this song. All she would say we're not playing any grateful Dead at dad's funeral. A week after the funeral I was listening to the song she starts crying what's this song. I walked out
I have so many photos of my 1995 wedding, and we made tie dye handkerchiefs for all the groomsmen including my Father. It was an awesome wedding where we only played tapes from other shows after the meal. Everyone commented on all of the music. The reason I replied to your post is because I know what it's like losing your parents, and it's simply fantastic that you have that memory of your Dad. Even though he is not here anymore, you have that. Keep it close for life. Karen
Father's Day 2012 is just 5 days away. I have two daughters, 17 and 10. I don't often cry but if you don't get choked up a little listening to this and seeing the picture that goes with it you may want to check your heart size like the Grinch did....
i remember making a friend listen to this song back in college ('94). and then having to explain the meaning. the picture is from "without a net". i just pointed to the picture, and explained, " father daughter, she's here, he's not." i think he finally got it.
Boss this is a band that was trying new shit, this is a wonderful era of a band, the voices aged, still willing to learn new technology..not willing to fall by the gutter as painful as it was for them to go on tour..they did. This is my era,I fell in love with them in this time. Born in 69 Biatch
Brent Was an amazing musician. His daughter was and is probably a lovey gal, now grown, I am sure, Sorry to his Daughter, his Widow, and all of his fans, Sorry to the rest of the Band mates, The sad honesty, Brent was raw like Jerry, he had his demons, who does not. Jerry left us an impression, not only in his art, but his music. Brent left us his music, which Jerry was a fan, I am hopeful, Brent's Little Girl is doing just fine.....Peace All
If I could have the experience depicted in that photo with my daughter I would be the happiest man alive. Apparently drugs are a lot stronger draw than I will ever imagine.
@my2greatgirls beautifull! u picked the best song ever! thats sumthing thats gonna live on in ur heart forever! mine too! im cryin just thinkin about it! so beautifull!
I loved Brent's voice. Some people have to die to find the peace they're seeking. Brent's death was a great loss to all of us left here. IMO, some of the GD's best years were when Brent was on the ivories.
Nor is it relevant they were both great in their own right collectively they reached into the souls of so many with a greatness we will never be so blessed to know again. may they both rest in peace
Brent was the best keyboardist (and maybe also the best singer) the Dead had. Jerry knew it, and loved him. We can see lots of eye contact between them two in videotaped concerts. They shared some special kind of complicity, to say. But I wonder... a guy who writes such a wonderful lullaby to his daughter... why in the world could he shoot speeball to death ?
"Another of Brent’s originals was the heartfelt ballad “I Will Take You Home,” which was written with lyricist John Perry Barlow. Myland led a poignant rendition of “I Will Take You Home” during the second set of the Grateful Dead show held on September 15, 1988 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mydland started to play “I Will Take You Home” and after singing the opening lines, he approached the song’s verse: Daddy’s come ’round for his darlin’ again / Hold my hand with your little fingers / Daddy’s loving arms gonna gather you in. At that point his daughter Jessica was placed on stage next to her dad and sat on his piano bench for the duration of the song." www.jambase.com/article/remembering-grateful-dead-keyboardist-brent-mydland-performing-will-take-home-daughter

Agreed brother
It's a heroic portrait of the pain of addiction.
You just described life.

@@longislandcerealkiller6385 agree, if it weren't for pig there'd be no dead but brent is equally special
Brent and Pig share the number 1 spot. I don’t make the rules. Keith and Donna can straight kick rocks tho

The Jerry equivalent of a keyboardist.
Not by a long shot.
