You are SO right about the gold service being better than 1st class. What comfort, and what a view! If I wanted to eat on a tray attached to the back of the seat in front of me, I'd get on a plane 👎. YOU got a CIVILIZED meal. REAL FOOD ON REAL CHINA PLATES WITH METAL UTENSILS, A TABLECLOTH AND CLOTH NAPKINS. RELAXING dining at a dinner TABLE. I haven't seen that on an American train since the 70's! 5 star restaurants couldn't do better. Thanks for making this AWESOME video. I'll put this trip on the bucket list.
A very well documented and narrated train journey. Fantastic foot stomping music in the background. My wife and I did the RM journey from Vancouver BC to Jasper way back in 2007. And yes, it was in Gold Leaf class. We have fond memories of that adventure. Thanks Jim.
Actually, they don't run the Seattle to Vancouver train any longer. I didn't know it at the time, but I was on one of the last Seattle to Vancouver runs that they did.
My in-laws did the trip from Vancouver to Banff. It was their last trip together. Mom was already sick and my brother in law had a fit that she wanted to travel still. But we encouraged them and they loved it. It gave her some wonderful memories to get her thru her final days which came about a year later.
My wife and I took the Mountaineer Gold Leaf from Vancouver to Jasper, then luxury motor coach on to Calgary. Loved (almost) every second of it, even though it was shortly after the huge forest fires, so lots of smoke lingering. Nights spent in mostly 4 star hotels. You will have a great time!
Driving back and forth from Vancouver to seattle, it’s a treat to see everything on here, I see all the time ,Everett,Bellingham, Blaine, chuckanut dr, peace arch crossing
How fun !! I've taken Amtrak from Ohio to Montreal and back as my high school senior class trip (1980). Then from Ohio to Texas for college. Then from Flagstaff back to Ohio in 2011. I just love it !! Thanks so much. I wouldn't change a thing.
My wife and I took the gold leaf service from Vancouver to Banff for our 50th wedding aniversary. It was a 2 day trip with amazing scenery. Service and food is excellent. However, the only down side was the noise level in the dining car. To many hard surfaces makes for a very high noise level while you are eating.
My wife and I did the Snow Train trip aboard the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto in Feb. 2018 (loved it!). I will have to do this trip too. The food, and seeing the trains is be a huge part of the experience.
My husband and I enjoyed the Gold Leaf from Vancouver to Banff. What a beautiful ride that was. My husband was a train buff and this ride was a gift from me to him on Valentine’s Day.
Thanks, Mark! I'm definitely a fan of the Rocky Mountaineer... and jealous of those who have been able to travel on it for more than just one day. My trip was just a day trip from Seattle to Vancouver. It was a great day, but I look forward to doing a longer journey from Vancouver to Banff at some point.
Five hour journey on that train just wouldn’t be enough, a two or three day trip, heaven. Thanks for sharing this interesting and entertaining film of your trip. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
I rode on the Rocky Mountaineer last year and it was the trip of a life-time!!! I rode from Vancouver to Banff, which was a two day trip. After a few days and traveling a little north on bus, I rode it from Jasper back to Vancouver. That was also a two day trip.
I've travelled on Amtrak train (even former private RR Company before Amtrak merged) for 51 years. So, I go once (sometime twice) a year in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if on time or delays. Train travel is a blast and amazing trips and friendly people.
Ahh, memories. We experienced a Gold Leaf Rocky Mountaineer package across Canada from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Vancouver. The actual Rocky Mountaineer train was from Banff to Vancouver. We thought it would be much longer than 2 days and 1 night. Our whole trip was memorable though. I love Canada. 🇨🇦
I’ve always wanted to ride this train. I used to live in Kamloops and my friend Rob Lamb, who was a teaching assistant when I was in high school, is also a Mountie and he would always ride his horse towards the train tracks near Riverside Park and wave at the passengers. I used to follow him and the other Mounties and do it with them. It was fun!
This looks AMAZING! I love love love train travel. And its so good to see old rail traditions carrying on, seeing the old stations, and seeing more than just Amtrak on the rails today.
The week we were in Seattle, the smoke from the fires up in BC,shrouded my view of the city, but what a city, traveling from New Zealand to the west Coast, from Vancouver down to Eugene,is something i'll always think fondly of,we took the Amtrak from King st to Eugene,it also had a big viewing carriage, fantastic scenery, can't wait to go back there.
I traveled on Rocky Mountaineer in late April from Lake Louise to Vancouver. Our trip actually started in Calgary and we bused for two days through Banff to reach Lake Louise. We did Silver Leaf and we were very happy. The food was great, and they are constantly serving you throughout the journey or providing commentary. Drinks and snacks are included. I will tell you that we also did the VIA's Canadian on the same trip and the food is even better. Hard to believe.
Love the trip from Calgary to Vancouver. Flew from Boston to Calgary, then train to Vancouver. Overnight in Banff . Truly one of our best vacations. My wife just corrected me, bussed from Calgary to Banff then train. Sorry, still was a great trip.
Some superb ultra wide angle videography, accompanied by very well composed commentary. Kudos Jim. You are sure to enjoy the Vancouver to Banff journey. The wife and I did Vancouver to Jasper in Gold Leaf back in 2007 and we still remember it with great fondness. We are also keen cruisers, but I guess cruising is on hold till the current health scare is all sorted out. Happy Travels.
I don't think there's any reason to not book cruises right now, due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Cruise lines won't be cruising to China until after this outbreak is over, and that's the only place where the real danger lies. There's no reason to fear a nice Caribbean cruise right now, for example.
I rode this from April 19th to the 20th this year! I was in Silver Leaf which is just as friendly as Gold Leaf. Unfortunately for the ending from Banff to Vancouver, it rained so the people in the Gold Leaf had a nice view of rain going down windows as the train snaked into Vancouver. My experience is 10/10 on the journey and hospitality of the staff. It was amazing. I got a Rocky Mountaineer HO scale GP40 and a Gold Leaf coach which costed a lot of money but for how much the overall trip was, it felt right to spill the expensive amount and receive both. Now may I also add that Rocky Mountaineer passenger coaches are somewhat on the rare side. As for the GP40 in the paint scheme, probably just the same rarity amount. That was the second reason to get both. The third was to make my first luxurious train experience as memorable as possible so having a scaled-down replica of some of the Rocky Mountaineer equipment was the best way to remember. After all, it’s the train itself as a model. Two very expensive high-quality ho scale models. If you have the money, want amazing scenery, want to relax, and want a vacation of your money's worth, take a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer. It'll leave you with amazing memories from years to come
I’m rediscovering how great train travel is. Amtrak should be though of as a national institution. Highly recommend Seattle, Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Amtrak 3/1/2 days great time SF to NYC $219 (senior).. Jim your voice sounds. Mr. Rogers-esque or a third grade teacher! Very nice narration.
You and your wife have a luxury ride on the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train from Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. I love the Canadian Anthem playing over the speakers of the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train!🇨🇦🚂🚃 The BNSF freight train is pulling freight cars full of coal. Coal is what was used to power the steam locomotives back in the days when steam trains were common before the diesel locomotives take over. You compare the BNSF diesel locomotives in the lettering of the BNSF Railroad in two different colors, one in black lettering with a swoosh underneath it and one without a swoosh underneath it and yellow lettering. You now have a BNSF diesel locomotive in your collection of G scale model trains, the one in black lettering with a swoosh underneath it. And I also love the King Street Railway Station is beautifully restored!❤ The Canadian Anthem 🇨🇦 to celebrate the founding of Canada is different than the American Anthem AKA Star Spangled Banner to celebrate the founding of the United States of America, North America.🇺🇸 As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!
7:59: I noticed an Amtrak diesel locomotive in front of The Rocky Mountaineer passenger train! That's because the Rocky Mountaineer locomotives are not equipped with PTC or Positive Train Control the day when you and your wife, Kellyn Zim boarded the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train from Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!
Besides the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train lead by an Amtrak diesel locomotive that has PTC or Positive Train Control, there are BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Citirail, Canadian Pacific diesel locomotives and VIA passenger cars and freight cars from different railways including BNSF!
I and my family rode the train from Vancouver to Lake Louise in June of 2019 and it was fabulous. One of the young ladies (Ashley) I spotted in your video was the car attendant on our Gold Leaf car. She and her co-worker were superb in their service to us. I would do this again in a heartbeat.
Nice video. Back in 2013 I made the journey across Canada, firstly on The Canadian, from Toronto to Banff, then on the Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver, followed by the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island. A great trip - this has brought back memories. Thank you.
It was - it was early September, and the weather was beautiful. Trips to Niagara, Sulphur Mountain, and lunch at Chateau Louise. My only complaint (!), and that of others, was the growth of trees which spoilt the view along many stretches of the route. The return was by air - Victoria to Calgary, then back to Heathrow.@@JimZim
About ten years ago, we took the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver, BC to Banff, Alberta; then by bus up the ice fields parkway to Lake Louise and Jasper; then another train right out of the 1950s National Geographic through Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, etc. all the way to Toronto. Nice trip.
In all of the 30 years I lived in Seattle, I've never departed from King Station. Always took Amtrak to Portland from Tacoma. I'll have to look into this ride the next time I visit home. Thanks for making me homesick for 2.38 seconds! 💙💚
Anybody else get a "Risky Business" vibe off the first music. How fitting considering there was a (clears throat) train in that movie too......... Does that upper deck get hot with the sun beaming down on you guys??? Man what a beautiful train. Now I'll need to add that after I do my Coast Star Light Amtrak trip......
The train has a fantastic air conditioning system that keeps the upper deck comfortable for the entire trip, no matter what the weather is doing outside.
We had wanted to take the grand-kids on a train ride & were not sure which one to take! Thank You for posting this video, it helped us make a decision!
How lucky you and your wife are to get to do such luxurious traveling. You must have had to work really hard and I’m sure you deserve it. There’s a train car that used to run up the Gold Coast it’s called the Tamalpais and it’s a fabulous Art Deco 1920’s sleeper car with a fantastic glass and chrome bathroom. I always wanted to go on a ride on that train. I did however get to take the Amtrack from California to Seattle back in the 90’s and it was really fancy I got a sleeper car and had all my meals in the dining car just like yours for a fancy meal. The rest of the time I spent in the bar car. I love traveling by train and I’ve been on a number of cruises. I took a first class suite on Carnival I think I don’t remember the name of the vessel but we had a large three room suite at the back of the boat with two balconies it has a whirlpool bath and was really luxurious and I went to Jamaica. Well my traveling days are probably over but I sure did enjoy all the places I went. Thanks for sharing
I've never ridden aboard the Rocky Mountaineer but my lady friend and I have taken Via Rail's Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver. I agree with you. The service is wonderful. It is similar to Pullman service aboard American trains before The Pullman Company closed it's doors.
So much fun! My wife and I chose to take our 20th anniversary in Seattle for ten days in the beginning of July 2013. We had not been to the Pacific northwest and after some research decided to come here (from Wisconsin). Besides exploring Seattle we took the Amtrak Cascades train to Bellingham (not to Vancouver as we didn't have passports). We left the newly restored beautiful King St. station and savored AND wallowed in the very nicely done cars with comfortable seats. Beautiful views traveling north along the Puget Sound Pacific Ocean coast. We arrived at Fairhaven which was a charming restored small town adjacent to Bellingham. Beautiful old buildings with many interesting shops and restaurants, very walkable. We took a local bus a couple of miles to this pleasant oceanside city. Much to stroll and experience. Good food, bakeries and COFFEE. We took local buses through the dramatically landscaped hilly Western Washington University campus. Very friendly town, also with lots to see. Stayed overnight and had a relaxing ride back to Seattle. I would get a passport and love go onto Vancouver. Another trip, another time.
Great video and commentary Jim. So nice to have our American neighbours ( I live in Victoria) travel across the border and visit B.C. We have so much in common. As an addendum, Michael Portillo's Great Canadian Railway Journeys from Kamloops to Banff, also on the Rocky Mountaineer, is available here on RUclips.
Jim i did the Vancouver to Banff trip last year and it is unbelivable. Coming from a part of Australia where we dont have very tall Mountains and its only the second time Ive seen snow in my life, i had an amazing trip on that train and as you say the staff are a wonderful group of people. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your trip and hope to see some videos of your adventure. And i did the Gold leaf too
On Burlington Northern rails, the freight trains have the "right of way" (not passenger trains), because Burlington Northers OWN'S the tracks. That is also true for Amtrak trains. We rode them to New York from Washington State and they continually are stopping for freight trains to pass.
Solid review Jim. I was watching this with my boys who LOVE trains and they let out a huge sigh when you said it was for "couples" not for kids!! Would love to take the whole family on this ride one day!
Jim you did a great job of filming the entire trip. I truly enjoyed it. Your commentary was very clear and legible. Wish to see more videos from you if possible. Of course I did like and subscribed you.
Unfortunately, the Rocky Mountaineer doesn't do the Seattle run any longer. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was on one of the last of their Seattle runs.
5 лет назад
I was born and raised in Seattle and Puget Sound region, and it really warps your mind when you grow up thinking that type of scenery and landscape is "normal", especially when I had to move to the East Coast as an adult and realized many parts of America are flat and ugly. Looks like it was a fun train trip up to BC!
It is a lot more efficient and faster to stop and start passenger trains after meets than it is to start and stop two mile long freight trains! That, and because the freight railways own the tracks, are the reasons freights have in most cases priority.
That's right... they've discontinued their service between Seattle and Vancouver. I don't know why. I didn't realize when I made that trip that I would be among the last to get to do it. It makes it even more special to me now! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do it before they stopped making that Seattle to Vancouver run.
Lovely video. I lived in Vancouver for 10 years and have driven North and South of the border several times in my car. I wish to do this trip. I hope I make it in splendid weather as yourself
I really enjoyed your video to sleep by lol, seriously though really nice work Jim, it was nice to see a glimpse of my hometown right across the border! Thanks for posting!
I am a train geek! and not only have you made a great video, you have given money to Rocky mountaineer cuz Ima get a ticket as soon as possible! wish I lived near though...
Of all the train service for people, is this train the very best? If so, is there other trips in Canada and the US? It is now Feb. 28, 2021. Are people allowed from the US into Canada? Are there stops to get out and enjoy Canada? Is this train still working during the pandemic? Really enjoyed what you filmed!
A word about RMRX Priority in this case, it only applies because the Seattle train was operated as an Amtrak charter, thus Amtrak's preferential dispatching extended here.
Loved the video and caught this train's passage as it rolled by the defect detectors on the BNSF Scenic Sub, North of Seattle. Locally, train fans and crews also refer to the "swoosh" with a less flattering "doorstop" moniker.
VANCITY, moved here from Texas 22yrs ago….great scenery here …won’t disappoint

Very nice, but the most magnificent beauty of the Rocky Mountaineer is from Vancouver to Banff. Absolutely incredible scenery.
What a lovely journey.

Eljackster, that sound nice. Proud to see Your contribution. Congratulations 🌹🙏
When were they built?
Do they look extensively refurbished to you?
eljackster .....what year?
Are they the biggest passenger cars in the world? (Or at least the tallest)
Thanks!
Thanks, William! I appreciate that.

Beautiful scenery but choice of background music ruined most of the video for me.
WWU student here! Glad you enjoyed our town and campus, it’s a beautiful place to be :)
What a brilliant train! Thankyou for making this video Jim ❤
Very well documented and narrated journey.
And i did the Gold leaf too
Absolutely stunning cars. On my bucket list
One of the best train videos. love your narration & the music. it felt like I'm travelling with you.
On Burlington Northern rails, the freight trains have the "right of way" (not passenger trains), because Burlington Northers OWN'S the tracks. That is also true for Amtrak trains. We rode them to New York from Washington State and they continually are stopping for freight trains to pass.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Taking the Rocky Mountaineer is on my bucket list
Excellent video & great commentary. Keep up the good work !!!!
I really enjoyed this video I love train videos. I am a total train geek
Great video...Great special effects (music). And of course what a great train experience.

This guy's voice could cure any disease
Solid review Jim. I was watching this with my boys who LOVE trains and they let out a huge sigh when you said it was for "couples" not for kids!! Would love to take the whole family on this ride one day!
Cool 😎 good video
Thank, looks like a wonderful trip.
Heading into a dining car and eating a luxurious meal sounds like a splendid idea!
Jim you did a great job of filming the entire trip. I truly enjoyed it. Your commentary was very clear and legible. Wish to see more videos from you if possible. Of course I did like and subscribed you.
Thanks Jim, great video, did not know this train served Seattle, I thought only Canada.
Unfortunately, the Rocky Mountaineer doesn't do the Seattle run any longer. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was on one of the last of their Seattle runs.
Amazing choice music and commentary. Great to see my hometown of Vancouver from a trains view. Amazing scenery.
What a cool video, thank you for sharing.
Looks like it was a beautiful day. Thanks for posting.
Wow, great shots and fantastic voice explaining everything in detail. I will be watching more of your videos. thanks !
So happy to see this exists.
Great video and I was just looking at their website, so they don't go to Seattle anymore ????
That's right... they've discontinued their service between Seattle and Vancouver. I don't know why. I didn't realize when I made that trip that I would be among the last to get to do it. It makes it even more special to me now! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do it before they stopped making that Seattle to Vancouver run.
Jim Zim well poo, I would have done this
Gold leaf of course 😍🥃🍷🤪
Lovely video. I lived in Vancouver for 10 years and have driven North and South of the border several times in my car. I wish to do this trip. I hope I make it in splendid weather as yourself
This looks like it was a really fun trip
Looks amazing!
This was an awesome video!
I hope you get to do your July 2020 trip. I'll watch for it. We took a train down from Vancouver to seattle after a cruise. It was fun too.
You can find the answer to a lot of those questions at www.rockymountaineer.com/
Fabulous presentation, as a professional voice over, it’s been a real treat watching listening to. Thank you
Great Narration!
Its good video to watch
super journey i like train videos
Excellent Footage HUGE Like, beautiful On Board Footage 👍😎
A word about RMRX Priority in this case, it only applies because the Seattle train was operated as an Amtrak charter, thus Amtrak's preferential dispatching extended here.
Loved the video and caught this train's passage as it rolled by the defect detectors on the BNSF Scenic Sub, North of Seattle. Locally, train fans and crews also refer to the "swoosh" with a less flattering "doorstop" moniker.
