    • @paulstuddert3323
      @paulstuddert3323 4 года назад

      In a nutshell, yes, closer to the original sound. Part of the overhaul of 3801 was rebuilding its whistle to its original condition. To me, it sounds like its original whistle recorded in 1943 in the Cinesound short "Monarch of the Rails" (it's on RUclips). Of the preserved 38s, 3813's whistle was awful; 3820's was high pitched, like 38s recorded in Phil Belbin's colour video of steam on Cowan Bank in 1959. Personally, I think 3830's whistle is wonderful. It should be great to hear 3801's overhauled whistle live.

    • @SuperRede4u
      @SuperRede4u 4 года назад

      I've read that the sound of the whistle being different is due to the higher steam pressure in the boiler being back to factory specifications. Previously the boiler pressure was reduced in later years for safety reasons. The higher boiler pressure gives the whistle a different tone.

    Interesting how the diesel-electric is like a bulldog and oozes power, but is not exciting, but the steam engine, appears much less powerful, but it communicates the work it is doing in a manner that just sounds exciting. One is just a powerful machine, but the other wheezes and pants like an animal breathing hard.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 4 года назад

      Robert McGuire That is an interesting suggestion. I did a little research and the answer is complex. The steam engine is simpler. As built, 3801 had 161kN of tractive force, but during the restoration this was reduced to 141kN. The 44 class diesel electric has a power output of up to 1450kW which is 1950hp, but the maximum tractive power varies between180 and 209kN for the first 60, and was 195kN for the last 40 locomotives. It appears that the diesel-electric has less outright engine power but much greater tractive power at the rail. Thus with less engine power it would still have more pulling power up this incline.
      As interesting trivia, the famous Mallard train that has the world steam speed record had 157kN, so the 3801 when built was slightly more powerful than that well known locomotive.

      Todd Hartill-law If I remember correctly, in this case 4490 is there to provide extra “load” for the load tests. If it has dynamic braking, they can use that to give 3801 more resistance as she pulls the train... if they’re not just using the loco brake on the diesel. Either way, that resistance means that they can test 3801’s strength without having to make up an entire train of carriages/coaches.
      But once 3801’s in regular service, then I agree with you; let the old girl run unaided.

    • @steeltrap3800
      @steeltrap3800 4 года назад +1

      It's mostly present for two reasons as far as I know: to provide backup in case the steam loco fails when on main line runs (pretty sure that's a regulation that applies to all heritage engines) and also to provide all the electrical power for the carriages.
      On load tests they can also use it to provide extra resistance through using dynamic brakes, as Mew pointed out, plus of course to control running down the hill in these particular down and up tests.
      I've seen 3801 on main lines many times (I grew up looking across the reserve where the major rail embankment is between Eastwood and Epping; on a calm day you could hear the whistle and hint of the engine coming up from West Ryde through Denistone and up to Eastwood), singly or double heading, and the diesel was basically at idle at the rear.
      Haven't seen 6029 yet. Must do that some time.

      Yeah, I suspect you're correct now that I think of it. I just watched a great bit of video on 3801 and 3830 double heading with a service vehicle (something like a Hilux with ability to run on rails) driving alongside and varying speed. They had 9 carriages (I think) and no diesel.
      I wonder if it's a case of a single loco needs it but doubles don't? Or perhaps it depends on the line they're using? Or it might also come down to electrical requirements of their cars, as some might need much more than others. Don't know, but presumably could find out if I went digging.

    Is the locomotive under power as well? If so, then that is several tons of unnecessary extra weight. Unhook it and see the weight difference. Plus, each car weight tons, try and replace them with all aluminium cars and see how lighter and fast the steam locomotive will go. Add extra passengers and see that the locomotive still has lots of power. That diesel locomotive wasn't really necessary. (9:30) Still following old ideas?

      This was a load trial, the diesel was on the end as a backup and as extra weight
      This was not a speed test

      Nah, not a good way of thinking there, is it? A diesel locomotive as a back up? On a private railway? As extra weight? For a rebuilt steam locomotive? Why not add more cars? And why do a weight test when that old girl has had a new life. If you had been bed-ridden for weeks and I gave a heavy job for you to do, would you feel rather incapable of doing it without first getting the energy back. That steam locomotive is still the same train that hauled ass in the past and would have been pulling the same heavy loads 60 years ago.

      @@mickcarson8504 it’s a requirement to do load trials every time a locomotive has major work done. But going by your comment you’re a armchair expert who doesn’t understand maintenance side of the railways at all.
