    I have the mini, it's basically useless unless you are cooking just for yourself. I have a medium, which is fine for my wife and I for most things we need, except you can't put multiple items at different temps on it. I have the 2xl, forgetta about it! You can cook anything and everything on it. If I'm giving advice on a new BGE owner, the XL is the one that will take care of nearly everything you need.

    I started with the large. I started off trying to cook pizzas with eggorator. I find difficult to get the egg to the recommended 600 degrees and then keeping it there while I cook 4 medium sized pizzas one at a time. I have 3 to feed the family and an extra for leftovers. It takes much too long because of the extra cook time required to cook a pizza at 425 or whatever. I’ve done low and slow cooks in the large as well. Not great with a large piece of meet. Beer can chicken or a couple of pork loins is great. I so a lot of indirect cooks. The air flow may be a factor as you’ve stated. I recently purchased an XL. Based on the way I cook, I wish I would have started with this one. Low and slow with eggorator is no problem as you said. I spread the coals out evenly, start the fire in the center and it burns slowly from the center out. I think it works better than the large because of the increased diameter. With the large, I would put a lot of fuel in it for a long cook and it seemed not burn as well (long) because the coal is stacked. In the xlarge you can do more more of a snake burn like I used to do in my Weber without actually burning around the perimeter. On the XL, I burn from center out as I mentioned. The XL also has no problem maintaining the high pizza temps. You just get it 800 degrees and then drop in the eggorator, grate, and pizza stone and close the top. It will drop to 450 when you do that, but if you leave it wide open the temp will come back up to 600 in about 15 minutes. I have had limited success doing that on the large. On the XL I can also cook larger pizzas more successfully be cause of the increased airspace. The XL is just easier to regulate. The large has more of a learning curve IMO.

    • @SOCM
      @SOCM 3 года назад

      I must say I am glad I have both the large and XL. It give me more versatility when cooking two dishes for the same the have different egg configuration requirements. Different temps or direct / indirect cooks. Yeah... you can use a moon stones to split your egg for both direct and indirect during the same cook, but I tend to run out of space on the large.

    • @GrillingwithPapaJ
      @GrillingwithPapaJ  3 года назад

      I will agree, the XL is easier to maintain temps. watch how hot it can get, I have had times it is hard to control the climb in temp and it takes a while to cool back down. Enjoy your cooks.

      Why not just get a pizza oven? Ooni or the like. They make for a better pizza #1, fire rolls over the top and forms a better crust, easy to get up to temp between pizzas. It's a small footprint, uses same charcoal/wood, handsome addition to put next to your green egg as I've done mine. Just a thought.
      I've seen the pizzas on RUclips from the green egg, and they all look under cooked on the top. Very little golden brown.

    Papa J, I have a covered, screened in porch attached to the back of my home. I normally cook in the front yard just outside my garage where I store my Yoder pellet smoker (sloped back yard and no outdoor back yard patio). My wife & I are empty nesters now, so I'd like to get a smaller smoker that I can place on the screened-in porch for a chicken, couple of steaks, Tri Tip, etc, which would be very convenient, but I'm concerned about heat, sparks, etc. I plan to keep the Yoder for the larger, longer cooks. Would you recommend one of the smaller Green Egg smokers for the enclosed, screened-in porch? Which one? thanks so much.

    • @GrillingwithPapaJ
      @GrillingwithPapaJ  Год назад

      Hi Ted,
      My concern would be placing an Egg in a screened in porch. Anything with a fire and "sparks" could/would be very dangerous. I know some Eggheads do place the Egg on a deck but use something fire protected for under the egg. I cook in my driveway and bring the egg out for each cook and roll in black when cool (usually the next day). Please do a lot of research about placing anything with a fire on a covered porch. If you are looking for something for just you and the wife, a MiniMax (check my channel for a video about the MiniMax) is a nice cooker and can do a variety off cooks very well. I also like the large if that's not too large - the vanity for that cooker is amazing. Let me know what you do.
      Thanks Papa J

    • @GrillingwithPapaJ
      @GrillingwithPapaJ  4 года назад +3

      As for the next purchase that has a lot to do with the type of cooks you do, size of your family and if you want to do remote cooks. My first was the Xl and second was a MiniMax. The MM allowed me too easily travel and to remote cooks. I still take it on road trips, with its 13" cook surface you can do a variety of cooks.
      As for Temp control, I own one (can't even remember who makes it) but don't use it. I find that the egg does a very good job maintaining temp, just make sure the vent hole are clear and you have a good amount of (quality) lump - and you are off to the races. My longest cook was on my XL - 22 hours at 275. Hope this helps, enjoy... Papa J

      @@robleblanc3492 for me I use what ever seasoning I like or just go with Salt and Pepper. Start breast side down for about 15-20 minutes then flip it over and cook until you get to an internal temp over 165 in the deepest part of the chicken. I find that cooking a whole chicken is a very rewarding cook.

    I have a Large BGE and its too small. The XL should be the minimum size ANYONE buys.

    I think you should give away a large to a subscriber and buy a small.

      Look at the price of your cars. They will cost you money each day you use them. Those grills will last 20 years with good maintenance. So sounds like a way better investment. Most people have 2-3 cars. So why not invest in a few grills. It’s not like €6000 is a lot of money. Good audio equipment cost way more.
