My baby girl came from a rescue center. She was quarantined for 14 days and delivered to us apparently healthy (she had 3 months). 5 days after being at our home, she was admitted with panleukopenia after suddenly starting to vomit and refusing to eat. She stayed at the vet for seven days and survived. Luckily, we had already placed her in a separate room when we brought her in and she did not infect our other cat. Now she is super healthy and weights more than our 10-year-old cat.

As long as they actually did a 14-day quarantine, it is basically unheard of that panlukopenia raises its head. Usually after 7 days you're in the clear. Unfortunately it is extremely easy to carry on your clothes from the outdoors, on your shoes, touching another animal outside that has the virus and then coming home etc.

I got a new kitten and he had lessions, vet told me not to quarantine because he seemed fine (had skin lessions and ear mites tho). I placed him with all my cats and then.. the plague was released, he had ringworm. My 2 cats, me and my toddler got ringworm too... After 4 months of treatment and hundreds of dollars everyone is finally healthy again... Quarantine your cats people, it's vital.

I guess he wasn't showing symptoms when the vet examined him (like Hannah discussed from 2:27 ‐ 3:00), but you'd think your vet could have recommended quarantining anyway, just as a precaution.

Quarantine is so important! I know so many people who just adopt cats and "chuck them right in" -- potentially exposing all your other cats to illness or parasites. It's so important to observe them and make sure that they're healthy before introducing them to your other cats. And those 2 weeks are a good amount of time for slow, gradual introductions (such as feeding each other on the opposite side of a door) to make sure they get along behaviorally, too.

    I love Piccolino's ears.
I remember one year, in our rural home, we kept hearing a cat crying outside in the snow. Our cats are indoor/outdoor, but we took a head count, all were accounted for, and the meows continued. So we set a live trap and caught a fully mature intact black fluff-ball cat. Since our cats were presumed to have been exposed to him, we didn't quarantine. Ultimately we regretted that decision, not because he brought disease to the other cats, but because he was incompatible with them. We got him fixed right away, and ear clipped as we weren't sure if he would adopt us or not. I was wheelchair bound at the time from breaking my leg. The day after he was neutered, my 80 year old dad was trying to socialize him (We called him Midnight at the time, later changed his name to Nightmare). In sauntered one of our cats, and Midnight turned into a monster. He got so enraged by our cats that he lashed out and bit my father. I didn't see it happen, and dad minimized his injury, but a couple hours later he told me he was going to go to get it seen by a doctor. (I couldn't drive, as my leg was broken).
Literally ten minutes after my dad left, Midnight/Nightmare was visiting me when another of our cats walked into the room. Recalling father's experience, I went to gently push my cat away so he wouldn't interact with the new cat, and Midnight saw my hand and launched himself at it, biting my hand and hanging by the mouth from my hand. I was able to remove him from my hand, and had to call my husband to come help (as I couldn't walk). Hubby did the most expedient thing, he put the new cat out the front door and within half an hour, we knew we had to go to the ER. My hand swelled up like a catcher's mitt and we had to do some aggressive treatment to get the spreading infection under control.
We still feed Nightmare outside, but he's not welcome as a member of the household. Luckily I was able to overcome the bite and the limb and life threatening complications of the bite. I have to say that when you have a broken leg, having a hand that doesn't work makes life much more difficult!

OMG you poor thing! I totally agree, two weeks is not much if it gives you peace of mind, not only with potential infection but also socialization. I love Hanna's setup with the plastic dividers - the animals can get curious about each other before they meet.

When fostering my second litter of kittens I had did a 2 week quarentine during which they were tested for all kinds of things. Flash forward to 2 days after I introduce them to another litter only for them to start developing concerning symptoms... it was panluk and now the kittens have been all over my apartment and cat. We were lucky and only lost one kitten from the group that developed panluk late and none one else thanks to Kitten Lady's older videos on quarentine and how to advocate for sick kittens to busy shelters!

Yes thank you for mentioning the phone. Idk how many times I have to tell people they gotta clean their phone too ! Also take the case off, clean the phone and the case!
When I worked in a covid outbreak I would wipe anything in my purse I touched, even if it wasn't in the area. I would come home and immediately strip all my clothes to throw in the laundry and hop in the shower after my work day. It makes a difference! Kept a separate pair of shoes for work. Wiped down my glasses even though I was wearing goggles.
Honestly if you're trying to prevent a spread of something, no amount of sanitation is too much. Take what you think you should be doing for sanitation and do it double

I cannot express how important quarantine is when introducing pretty much any life into your home. I once made the mistake of not quarantining some fresh water plants for my aquarium. It turned into a complete algae fueled nightmare as I had inadvertently introduced a particularly aggressive species. I was also risking the lives of my shrimp, as parasites could have been present and infected them-- where a quarantine period would have mitigated that risk substantially.

I should have done this with my new cat. I thought he was screened for all parasites per the rescue group. The rescue group said he was having diarrhea because of the rich food he was being fed. Because of covid, the soonest I could get him to the vet was a month after adoption and unfortunately he had giardia. And because I thought it was a food issue, I exposed my resident cat to this while I was doing slow introduction. She luckily didn’t catch it, but I still feel terrible about it. The rescue group wasn’t at all apologetic - I called just to warn them about the exposure to the other cats and they didn’t seem to care.

When I got my kitten we made my room kitten proofed and put all her things in there. We have another cat in the house so we wanted to keep her away from the kitten until she was ready. The kitten was around 2 and a half months old at that time and we got her from a pet smart. She seemed healthy until we got home and a day or so later she started sneezing and coughing and scratching her ears constantly. We took her to the vet because I was thinking she had ear mites because I watched one of your videos with the symptoms. We took her to the vet and turns out she had a cold and ear mites. At that point the two cats had already met each other with booping noses and stuff so we were lucky enough to have our older cat not to get sick. Glad we had caught this early on because she got a cold around 2 weeks later. 😅

I love your work! Sadly can't watch it at the moment, because our youngest cat, which we also raised with a bottle, got hit by a car one month ago, only being one year old. I miss him so so much :(
But since he wasn't feeding on bottle anymore, I wanted to raise some other kittens with a bottle. Which aso sadly, with my job is impossible unless I bring them to work everyday and feed them there. ...

Question about clothes you use in the quarantine room: do you take them off and leave them right outside the room (say on a towel or a designated bag) or do you have to wash them immediately especially in the case of panleuk/ringworm? Going in and out of the room multiple times I would run out of clothes and I'm thinking if I keep them in a designated are and then disinfect that properly would that work?

    • @okashi10
      @okashi10 2 года назад +4

You could try what some shelters do with volunteers -- each volunteer wears a long apron over their clothes, so after interacting with the kitten, you can just throw the aprons in a designated bag/bin and wash them at one time. And if possible, keep the kitten in an area with hard surfaces that you can disinfect.

I found a 3-week-old baby and I have two adult cats at home. The vet said it should be quarantined for 3 weeks. It looks healthy, but how you say it, you never know. I have so many questions! But I’m only going to ask one... I worry because feeding it is very difficult. I see your baby take the bottle so easily, but my son fights, it is difficult my that introduce in his mouth the bottle. In fact, now I use a small syringe (1ml), after struggling to accept it and take the formula. The problem is I have to fill it many times so I can take the amount he needs... so every new take is a new fight. I have no idea why he does it and if there’s anything I can do. I hope you read this message.. I want my new kitten to grow up happy and healthy.❤ Thank you!

I wonder if I only quarantine 1 more week or 2 more weeks. It doesn’t help that with the huge room they have to play in , their favorite activity is to stick their paws under the door to try and paw at my cat.

I know you likely have a separate video on these diseases, but are you ever concerned about the spread of the "mighty three" FIV/FeLV/FCov? The first and last aren't the major issue but especially FeLV seems to be tricky.

Oh, YAY! Hannah just had to make sure you weren't going to give bad germs to any other furrball micro-ninjas. You know what this means now.... right?

Really good video! Keep up the good work!
btw did the audio mix get a boost in the high frequency? The high pitch parts of the video kinda squeek. Maybe its reverb from the big room?

I found a kitten over a week ago. I'm looking for someone to adopt it, in long island N.Y. . He was trapped in a rose bush, I had no idea you were supposed to quarantine I've had him for over a week he wasn't quarantine he was in a separate cage so I guess that's a type of quarantine. He appears about 5 weeks old weeks old.

Thank you. This was super helpful! I didn't even think of the shoe thing! I am caring for my second orphaned (single) kitten. With my first I didn't have any other pets and didn't have to quarantine (or at least wasn't knowledgeable about it- I had a lot to learn). I now have a resident cat (the 1st orphaned kitten. He's 6!) and dog. I've had the kitten for a week and I hope I didn't infect my house by not protecting my feet. Do you have a recommendation to disinfect carpet as I've walked on the carpet in my house since then?
On another note, she went to the vet yesterday and he said to quarantine her for 4 weeks. He wouldn't give any dewormer meds because the fecal sample I gave wasn't big enough and he doesn't know specifically what worms she may have. You and several other rescuers I've talked to recommend treating at 2 weeks old. Should I buy some locally and give it to her anyway? Or wait until I can get a big enough fecal sample?
Update: in case anyone is reading, she has roundworms! I should've just given her the pyrantel when I got her and she'd be getting her second round by now 🤦‍♀️ and in the meantime while I was getting a fecal sample she had some diarrhea and vomiting (yes I did take her back to the vet). I could've possibly prevented that if I'd just given her the meds when I got her.

I’m sorry to hear that :( I agree, I would have given her the pyrantel anyways it’s a very safe medication. It just stays in the bowel it’s not systemic.

@@ALT-vz3jn thanks! And the vet wanted to charge me $30 for .5 ml (one dose for her weight at the time). I ended up buying a whole bottle for $25 and could treat several litters for that price 😂 I learned my lesson!
