Great video and advice. I often use a full minnow or minnow head when fishing locally here in NW or most everywhere else. But on Winnipeg I normally put no minnow at all on my rattle bait or spoons. I do put saltys on my jigs but I usually just have a hair treble on it is all on my other lures I keep it moving the whole time though. But admittedly Winnipeg is in a league of its own imo and the eyes there often have an aggressive attitude like I’ve never seen out of a walleye.
Thanks very helpful tips , booked for webster SD Waubay area jan 10th never been there do you have any video's for info on that , just left scheels in Lincoln Ne with a cart full of clam jigs & sppons tackle
@@michaeln2386 the tails can be more durable especially with frozen minnows. I sometimes like the added bulk by using the head and the tail on places like Lake Winnipeg.
I’ve always hooked my minnow head going through the bottom of the mouth and out through the head. You do the opposite. Do you think there’s a difference?
I wish those treble hooks were always a little bit bigger on all these ice fishing. Lures... Small treble hooks when you put the minnow head on... I always have to change them out and put a number eight or even a six sometimes.... Too much of the hook is covered with the minnowhead on those small hooks..... All the companies make that mistake...
@@williamradleyjr2577 I have played with that for some extra noise and it does make it harder for fish to twist on the hook but what I have been playing more with is split rings tied with braided line so that there is no noise and the fish can’t twist off the hook.
This is great Jason giving tip's on walleye fishing, thanks not many like you.
Never thought of any benefits to leaving half the minnow
Thank you.

do you ever hook through the back so the minnow is horizontal with side to side action?
@@ryannielsen6102 I do that at times but mostly with frozen or salted shiners.
I've been on some lakes where a live minnow hooked perpendicular to the spoon outfishes every other presentation. Notably on light flutter spoons.
*disclaimer:* no minnows were harmed during the production of this video
Any strategy in hooking the tail piece along with the head? I have done this a few times but can't say it really helped or hurt.

on a hot bite, I've run out of minnows and started using the pieces of tail. Still caught fish just as good, but thats a hot bite.

Great tips! What brand bait cooler is that? How's it hold up in the cold?

How bout adding an extra split ring between spoon and the treble hook.
