I live in an aprs dead zone. A VHF in general dead zone actually.
I suppose the way to change that is to start using it.

Jason, I always learn from your videos. But this one was especially informative. I've always wondered how exactly how they Emergency Status worked with APRS. Thanks for such a well done explanation! Fantastic tip on putting in a voice frequency in the message if one needs to use this feature.

Thanks man! It's pretty neat to see it in action and know exactly what would happen if you needed it.

Mic-e status encoding has been around since the beginning of APRS in the early 1990's. APRS is a situational awareness tool, thus the various statuses. The EMERGENCY! status was intended to be a priority status and how it is to be handled by most radio and software clients is defined in the APRS standards. There also a standard for encoding a frequency in your comment such that capable radios and software can tune to the frequency. It's called something similar to QSY function. Kenwood APRS radios made since about 2010 or so support it as well as most modern Yaesu APRS radios. There's lots more to APRS than just sending your location. 73! Randy WF5X

It would be nice if you could use it in a fashion where you flip a switch on the dash from normal operations to emergency. One of those switches we have on some equipment where you flip it down, it works, to flip it up, you have to remove a protector so you can’t accidentally switch to an emergency. That way if you’re out mobile and have an issue, your family who knows nothing and cares nothing about ham radio could make the change.

If the ISS is overhead and running the digipeater, then you could possibly get a signal out.
Of course, you and the battery have to survive long enough.

That didn't really answer what I thought it would. I've got several non-APRS radios that have Emergency buttons. i.e. Kenwood TK-2180, Anytone UV-868

Those radios do whatever you program them to do. Some agencies actually use the emergency function. Mine will cause the radio to change to a dedicated talkgroup and key the radio for ten seconds while at the same time alerting communications that the button has been activated and allow them to hear what is going on. Some agencies use them for other functions like scan or a home channel.
