Guys with stock radios asking about nav upgrades, check out the Dynavin N6. It's a bit pricey at $750, but it's completely plug and play and doesn't require you routing anything in the trunk. It works with both DSP and non-DSP cars of any year. Plus, unlike the other aftermarket radios for the E39, the distributor for the Dynavin is extremely helpful and will help you out if you run into any issues. Best of all, it looks fairly stock in the E39, without the gaudy "aftermarket" look that mass-market head units have. It has all the modern features that even this MKIV unit does not, like aux in, Bluetooth, modern maps, real iPod/iPhone integration, and more.
Mark IV + 16:9 Display is probably the best upgrade you can do on a pre-facelift M5. Facelift steering wheel, E60 shifter & dashboard are a close second though.
Finally you've upgraded it. :) Following you and your car now for almost 2 years. Very nice work, its nice to see that you take care on your M5 so well. Greets from germany!
Great video! 10x a lot. However do you think that the upgrade is possible when you have the basic, standard Business CD and no computer in the back? How can I check if there is a wiring that goes to the back? Thank you!
Great video on the upgrade! Question for you....I just purchased a 2002 325Ci and it was supposed to come with the MKIII, but the previous owner did an upgrade to the MKIV DVD computer in the trunk. I also have the 16:9 display in the dash, butunder settings it is showing as SW 3 1/50, which would indicate that it still has the MKIII installed. Is there something missing to have this officially upgraded to the MKIV so I can update the maps? Any input would be appreciated.
Hi maite, i am from new zealand, i just bought BMW 530i its a japan import i have seen lot of your videos on upgrading the computer versions, i have DVD navigation system in the boot but on screen i can not find the version of it, i despratly want to change to newer version , just want to know the version 32 that you used will it be good hea..

It is a September 2002' 530i Edition Exclusive in a really good condition, but it misses several features that I'd like to add for a full OEM experience. From the factory it was equipped with a C43 radiomodule and didn't come with any Navigaton for obvious reason. One of the previous owners has installed a 16:9 display, but as I can understand nothing more. The UI is reeealy old-fashioned, tbh I have never seen anything like mine in any videos or photos in forums. Moreover, It even won't show any software version if you go to the settings menu. I really have no idea on what could it be, but it doesn't make sense so nevermind. What I am going to do is to equip my E39 with an MKIV Navigation unit and get the latest UI version for my board computer. Thank you for your job and assistance for all the E39 lovers. Your videos and articles are true diamonds in the whole internet. With huge respect, Jan.
Hi Jan, congratulations on the E39 acquisition! You probably have the TV tuner module that is currently powering your display instead of the navigation computer. You can purchase and install the computer along with the proper wiring harnesses and wiring adjustments, but you will need to do some coding in addition to retrofitting a navigation compatible radio. You may need to update the firmware to V32 on the MKIV, depending on what yours ships with. I have videos about the software update process on this channel. Thanks for your kind words and support!
Thank you so much for reaching out! Wasn't sure if you're still in touch haha So if I got you right, the navigation unit can be installed INSTEAD of the TV module only (not sure which one is it, but I'll look for it). Is that right? With the software upgrade I'm good, already studied your guidance on both RUclips and your website 😊
Since we never got the video modules in North America, I know next to nothing about them. I assume you can replace it with a MKIV... but I have no experience here. @@Yanchick19
I recently had my MK4 computer´s DVD function fail on me giving "error reading DVD" messages on the screen. These units are out of production and hard to come by at least here in Norway. Finally I found a place that sold "factory overhauled" units but for a whopping 850$! Then by coincidence I downloaded the iFixit app for iPhone and bimmernav.com offers the DVD assembly part only to be replaced or shipped for DIY. I did the latter, cost me 250$ and works like new.
thanks for the reply! I'll search around the web i guess and see if it's possible, otherwise i'll settle for the EONON unit which looks similar to the post-facelift unit.
Hi there :) Umm just a quick question. I have a 1998 e39 528i, it has the old fashioned cassette player etc etc and I was wondering if it were possible to remove the screen/cd player from a newer e39 (eg 2001-03) and put it in my car? Would it be compatible or?
Could go with something like this on Amazon: Android 7.1 Car GPS Navigation for BMW E39 E38 M5 X5 5 Series HIZPO in Dash Radio DVD Player support 4G/WiFi/OBD2/DAB+/DTV/TPMS. It gives you all the latest stuff you would ever want for about $300. If you have DSP you can bypass it or get an adapter.
Great video you guys! i have a 1998 BMW 540i and can you upgrade it to a mark 4 GPS Navigation. Right now i have the 6 CD changer a cassette in the front the radio has DSP. If you can make a video about doing this (if possible) great(: or tell me here.
I wanted this screen in my 97 540i/6 but am disappointed to see the tape deck. Do they make them with a CD slot instead? And is there even an aux cable input on these? At least in the rear of it? If I have to run it through the glove box that's okay. If not I'll go with a clarion. A reply would be much appreciated!
Hi Ryan. Looking to do this very soon on my M5 but I have been told I need a TV module unit also in order for the display to be full on the 16:9 or it will be a 4:3 display on a 16:9 screen
The TV module was never offered/used in the US so I am not at all familiar with them. If you use a MKIII/MKIV and a 16:9, it will work in widescreen mode as designed. A MKIII/MKIV on a 4:3 display will compress the video to fit the display ratio which will look odd. And a MKI/MKII one a 16:9 will stretch the graphics to fit, which will also look odd.
is it possible to connect aftermarket amp to original stereo? i want to connect my subwoofer, and i dont want to ruin the factory looks with aftermartket headunit
Wish I had this system in my E39. I guess it would be difficult to wire up a system like that without the car coming with it stock. I know some people install android based Dynavin systems though, problem is it costs a fortune (Still, might be cheaper than the stock system)
Hi Ryan! I was thinking of installing a aftermarket Navscreen in my E38 I will provide a link, what I was wondering is will it fit in my e38? because I have a 16:9 screen just like yours in my e38 today, I found a good looking touch screen that has blutooth aux and usb funktions on the go, also I would like to know your thoughts on it, good bad? Aftermarket Navunit link below. Hualingan 4th Gen Multimedia Headunit in my E53 BMW X5 If my screen does not show DSP does that mean I have the wrong amp or no amp at all btw? Thanks as always you´re the best!
Rasul, that unit should work in your car. An E38 with navigation will have DSP. There is no button for it because it is on the navigation menu. Your amp should be behind the left door in the trunk, it'll be black with the wires coming out of the top. Personally, I would always stick OEM. In an E38/E39 setup, I would go 16:9 display, MKIV navigation computer, SIRIUS XM radio, and the AUX retrofit. I have a video of this on the channel in my 02/00 E39. This setup is very expensive though, I realize that. But that unit should work and give you the results you're looking for!
***** Thx for a detailed answer! I have watched all your videos thoroughly, and yeah the whole MKIV, Sirius is damn expensive xD Yeah I think I have seen the black amp in the trunk, with "button" I meant on the navigation menu there is no option for DSP :( I have an AUX adapter that worked before my battery died "duh"... and now my "AUX" option has disappeared when I press "Mode" tried disconnecting and connecting back again with no result :( I loved what you did with the sound btw those two subwoofers.. man I want to do something about the sound too but all that work! and need to get a new amp for that with two subwoofers so much stuff shoot me!
Rasul Avtorhanov The DSP amp drives the subs pretty well, that's an easy job if you want more bass. Idk why the AUX would disappear... maybe try disconnecting the battery for a bit and then reconnecting? AND idk why DSP isn't there! Unplug everything overnight maybe and then try again.
***** Yeah those are my problems anyway :D the thing is I put my e38 in a warm garage over winter, (without disconnecting the battery) when I jump started it aux disappeared and some other problems, but now I learned my lesson, I´ve disconnected and connected the battery multiple times, aux didm´t come back. Maybe bmw have to upgrade some software don´t know, thx for all the support man! keep the good work up btw :)
I was wondering what the difference between SW 4-1/00 and SW 4-1/02 and could it affect the ability to cancel a route. When I try to cancel an active route from the terminate guidance option I do not get the yes/no option. any thoughts ?
Hi, I just purchased a 1997 BMW 528i, and the original radio screen is messed up and is very difficult to read. I really want to replace it with a radio from a 1996 BMW 7 Series E38 radio I found (it's the one that has the smaller screen display) on ebay, is this possible, if I remove both the radio and the tape player? It said it was compatable with my car on ebay but I am not sure
Ha ha Great clip man. I did this a few years ago and I can relate with the "its a bit cold out here" and "my back" ha ha it took me ages and it SUCKED just to get that one stupid cable to plug into the Mk4 unit. But damn it was satisfying wen it was done. I would agree with many who instead of doing this these days. Would just get a plug and play Android system with all the Mod cons.... BUT there is nothing like keeping it original with the 16:9 monitor.... Sweet clip man and it took me down memory lane. I even changed the radio unit in the back to one from Bucharest in Romania and even managed to get TV in the car ha ha
I just bought a replacement MK IV sat nav to replace mine which would not read the map DVD anymore, but with the replacement unit when plugged in all I get is a blank screen on the 2002 BMW 5 Series E39 car display ? The label on the MK IV Say's it's made in Germany, HW: 1.0.1 / SW:1.2 My original unit said SW: 3.0 My original is made in France. Can you help ?
Sounds like a defective computer if its not booting up. Finding working computers is getting harder and harder. There are no hardware compatibility concerns between HW and SW versions.
Thanks for the info. I can send the unit back for a full refund but then I thought I could take out the laser module, if it's working and transplant it in my faulty unit that cannot read discs. The seller gave me over half my money back as a partial refund so I thought I would take a chance. It was only £60 UK pounds but recieved £35 as a partial refund.
i have the wiring harness and all the other modules i only need to know how can i do the retrofit of normal business rds with tape to screen 16/9 on my car
I highly recommend keeping the radio components Genuine BMW. The aftermarkets have a long list of features, but are pure garbage in application. Navigation cannot easily be retrofitted to cars that did not come with it from factory. I would recommend the BlueBus to add bluetooth/phone calling capability to your car.
Hi, if there some kind of a number of the two connectors, I have an old radio with a large connector, so I wonder whether it can be connected with the two smaller connector, because I bought this older navigation with a 4: 3 screen, but the connectors are not the same, if there might be some kind of converter on ebay, sorry for the English I was a little helper with Google translator :)
Hi, I hope my 2 questions are interesting... QUESTION 1: have a 1998 E38. I just upgraded to MKIV dvd unit. 1st question.. why is MKIV a "DVD" unit.. if the unit only uses cds? (Why use a DVD when your road map is only 700mb, and why dvd when v32 is installed via a cd also?) I wasnt sure if the internals are actually quicker in the "dvd" unit, but the "Dvd" not required. Im in Australia, is it possible you need a DVD for North American Maps? I just visited the entire of the states and im thinking the only reason for "DVD" would be in America where it all fits on one DVD. Sorry, does this make sense? If this is the case I dont understand as yet how its a "quicker" unit if its reading CD maps. Wouldnt the "speed" of the unit only improve IF you are using a DVD disc? (is it a faster drive or just DVD>CD faster)?. Question 2: I want to get a 16:9 screen. I noticed the Aesthetics of the e39 is different to the e46 16:9 screen. They look the same size dimension wise, but e46 has a little groove 1 1/2 inch up the unit. I assume for aesthetics with the e46 dash. If they are the same size physically, BUT have different quality somehow, id rather put an e46 unit in ONLY IF ITS 'Better" somehow.. Thanks for answers in advance.
+dannymac322 The MKIV can use CDs or DVDs. I use the 2015 DVD map disk myself. The disk I use has the entire Eastern US and Canada on it, so it's probably around 4GBs. The internals of the MKIV are noticeably faster than those of the MKIII. Other countries may fit on a 700MB CD though, as you thought. The E39 16:9 fits beautifully, the E46 16:9 would probably look weird in an E39. I would think it would bolt in though, unless the holes for the screws are aligned differently.
+E39Source thanks for your'e quick reply! yes, im just thinking the physical size of Nth America is the same as Down Under, but Aus has oh so many less roads! like 2/7th's which could explain why it fits on a cd whereas like USA is positively choc full of information. thanks for this. you have given me a vision. i will go ahead and get the e39 16:9. cheers mate!
Dear I have problem with my Car 2000 e39 , the Radio stop working , changed the fuses , unplug the negative cable from the battery , even changed to 16.9 screen but no hope. need your help.
Hi. I have I problem two, I bought an e39 touring and the radio doesn't work. I hot an 16:9 navigation with bm24 modul. I start the car push the radio pin and nothing goes on. I checked the cables in the trunk and all seems ok the fuse is good nothing wet. instead the CD changer the car has a Yatour USB device. I asked the seller about this and he said that all was working until the battery died on winter. the navigation doesn't work and the radio doesn't work either. to turn on the radio you simple must push the left side button and all works. a triple checked the cables I got voltage going in 13,48 the ground is good and the remote wire tells me 0.01 with the radio turned on. is that good? I wanted to remove all of these and insert a normal CD player because I don't need the navigation system. hover can I remove bm24 and make all work from the front of the car? please send me a video if you have something. thanks again and have a great day
Somebody modified your car's setup at one point, and it would be impossible to diagnose from here what is wrong. If you were close, I would be able to figure out what is wrong. It's impossible to do so remotely. I would try to find a local BMW indy shop though, they can help.
How do you remove the pink and blue connector from the mk3 unit, I can't get mine out, they're stuck in there and the magenta colored tab think idk what to do with it
Karim nassef Depress a small clip opposite the side of the harness that plugs in, then swing the black lever 90 degrees to push the connector free from the computer.
Looks marvellous! Amazing! I'd recommend when I was doing amp work on an E46 folding the seats and lying down helped a lot. However that's a touring, not sedan. Amazing work and looks amazing! Full facelift now with the better steering wheel! ;)
oh. ok........ can the screen be powered like android/DVD player? with after market ,I would loose the woodgrain that folds like a flap ,across the radio that covers the cd player
+Cliff Weaver The screen does not move, it only tilts to access the CD player/tape deck that sits behind it. And yes, you would lose that wood piece, but you wouldn't have a CD player anymore.
i have a stock 530i 2001, that radio you just took out ,will it fit in my car? my l.e.d. is horrible so it is pot luck on the music, tape does not work and the cd player can not read any disk.
+Cliff Weaver Does the car have navigation already? If not, It will technically fit, but not without thousands of dollars in other hardware to make it work. If the vehicle did not come with navigation, it's virtually impossible to retrofit unless your budget is unlimited.
Shalaylee Hard That's pretty much impossible. You have to remove the seats, carpeting... it'd be a huge job. You're better off to buy a car with the navigation.
Just got done doing this, and the video was incredibly helpful. But I have an issue, the radio doesn't work. I can only access the menu. I can't switch over to the radio. Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix?
@@E39Source Nothing worked on the old unit. The screen was black, and i had no sound from the radio. From my further research, i will be checking the radio module. I have the original one still in there, now I'm going to try the one i got from when i bought the head unit. Thanks Ryan
@@scottt3428 Ahh, I see. The navigation display is only a screen, it is not responsible for the radio, sound output, etc. Just data input (like seeing what FM station you're on). The computer in the trunk is just the navigation computer. If you have radio/sound issues, you either have a bad radio module (small silver box rear left tail light) or amp (big black box by rear left tail light.)
How do you get color set to bring up 4 colors? I miss them! When I connected a 09 mk4 unit and upgraded to v32 it has only 2 colors now listed as Day/Night 1/2. Ive been googling this for half a day cant find anyone with that.
When I made this video over 7 years ago, it was a different version of the custom software. The version I run and share at www.e39source.com/downloads/ now is the latest and best, in my findings. There are two color modes, day and night. Day is standard blue/orange with a white background on the maps. Night is blue/black with a black background on the maps, which is nicer at night. 4 color options would have been other custom software that I have never seen before, and do not have access to. The stock BMW software would include three colors, labeled 1, 2, and 3. Perspective mode is absolutely still there, but you may need to enable it again in the 'secret menu'. Instructions are in the article linked in the description to this video.
I have never recommended the aftermarket units. I'm too much of an OEM guy. But if you want the features for a much more reasonable place, I can't argue with that.
I have a 1997 540i I simply want a larger display for the stereo. but it actually came with a six disc in the back and a cassette player up front..so obviously upgrading to this is out of the question. what would you recommend for getting a larger display?
+isaacg4 If you want a larger display and dont want to retrofit navigation ( I wouldn't), the only option is aftermarket parts. Dynavin, Pioneer head units, etc.
+Bobby O'Hearn what would I actually need to get to upgrade the display to this one? just the correct computer and mounting bracket. and then the display itself? or is the wiring just not there?
+isaacg4 Unless your car is pre wired for navigation (unlikely), you would need the entire wiring harness, as well as the computer, display, and antenna.
Hi Ryan so I have the 4:3 right now and I'm trying to upgrade it do something newer one. But how you know most other type of radioed on the e39's they have a different wire harness so how to I convert it to because I need the larger one instead of the small one.
Well I'm not trying to upgrade to an oem stereo but a pioneer head unit and like most of them they have the larger harness so are there converters for that.
My 2001 e39 530 and I want to upgrade to one of those mk iv GPS system what I need to do? My car does have either previous model of GPS nor cd changer . But there is a DSP. Any suggestions?
So you do have navigation already? If not it's very difficult to add it. If you do have it, you have the MKIII since it's a 2001. It'd be a plug and play install to get the MKIV. CD changer would be plug and play as well, as long as you're pre-wired for it. (Check for little round black plastic pre-wire logo inside the trunk on the carpeting.
Hi, I did upgrade my mk III to the "v32_night_all for mk3" all went well except I only got the cool M splash screen once after the computer rebooted... now whe I open my door i get a blank screen when i used to get the bmw screen..... any ideas? thanks
I think the M splash in mine only appears after the car has been sleeping (16 minutes of no activity). Leaving and coming back quickly is just black on mine too until the menu comes up.
yes you're right, I got out of the car locked the doors, then unlocked and open my driver door it shows.... it's very cool and I have the night vision working but only on the blue color shade. Thanks a lot it is VERY COOL! my car is a 01 740IL SPORT I love these cars! I have a 97 528I as well... you know... two BMWs are better than one
***** Technically yes, but not without thousands of dollars in other hardware to make it work. If the vehicle did not come with navigation, it's virtually impossible to retrofit unless you're budget is unlimited.
***** You can always purchase a complete navigation system, but that will usually be in the $1000 range. At that point, you might as well get a Dynavin N6 which will be a lot more modern and a lot easier to install.
I've heard 16:9 unit will work with MKII, can you verify that? I dont feel like buying an MKIV because lets face it, its still slow. I never use the Navigation, only the radio.
Still slow? It's actually faster than any E60 navigation system that I have used, and the earlier F10 systems. I find the MKIV in an E39 lightening fast. And, the 16:9 display will work on a MKII IF the MKII software is up-to-date. It scales it just fine!
Hi I'm buying a 2001 740 il w/ the old navigation display and i have a 2001 740 il w/ the new navigation display, my car don't run anymore. (the nav works fine), can i put the 16.9 in the one I'm buying...? thanks

bradcabe No idea about aftermarket stuff. If it's listed to fit E39, then it will. I would personally do 16:9 and MKIV computer with the latest software.
***** one question.. if i have the 4:3 screen . could i upgrade it to the 16:9 with out changing the computer to a MKIII or MKIV? just using the one i have installed originally in the trunk?

Great video you guys! i have a 1998 BMW 540i and can you upgrade it to a mark 4 GPS Navigation. Right now i have the 6 CD changer a cassette in the front the radio has DSP. If you can make a video about doing this (if possible) great(: or tell me here.
sorry forgot to ask would the wiring be on the standard model in the trunk if you needed to upgrade
@@E39Source Thank you for your help 👍🏼
is it possible to connect aftermarket amp to original stereo? i want to connect my subwoofer, and i dont want to ruin the factory looks with aftermartket headunit
Hualingan 4th Gen Multimedia Headunit in my E53 BMW X5
If my screen does not show DSP does that mean I have the wrong amp or no amp at all btw?
I have watched all your videos thoroughly, and yeah the whole MKIV, Sirius is damn expensive xD Yeah I think I have seen the black amp in the trunk, with "button" I meant on the navigation menu there is no option for DSP :( I have an AUX adapter that worked before my battery died "duh"... and now my "AUX" option has disappeared when I press "Mode" tried disconnecting and connecting back again with no result :(
I loved what you did with the sound btw those two subwoofers.. man I want to do something about the sound too but all that work! and need to get a new amp for that with two subwoofers so much stuff shoot me!
Maybe bmw have to upgrade some software don´t know, thx for all the support man! keep the good work up btw :)
while im here im curious to know, why are some m5s with just regular radio, like i had in my 540, i thought screen was in all m5s e39s
It said it was compatable with my car on ebay but I am not sure
good job, the tremble is the hardest though.
It does not come with a Navigation. Do you think the BMW Dealership can help?
Do you recommend the bluetooth, touch screen, HD quality, USP, SD card, etc. Navigation?? i have a 2003 540i with navigation in it?
Thank you..
Thank you, do I need to buy the DVD GPS in the back? Where the trunk is.
Are you going to upgrade the steering wheel?
bonjour le petit voyant rouge qui sallume a coter du lecteur dvd sa veut dire kwa?merci beaucoup
+mohamed sahl achille Abbessi is your car pre wired?
is there any way to upgrade the standard e39 radio to some kind of anroid without having to put all that stuff that is in the trunk
I highly recommend keeping the radio components Genuine BMW. The aftermarkets have a long list of features, but are pure garbage in application. Navigation cannot easily be retrofitted to cars that did not come with it from factory. I would recommend the BlueBus to add bluetooth/phone calling capability to your car.
updated this to my 1997 540i and for some reason this new 16:9 display just keeps flashing but works other way, what could be wrong with it?
Check all of the connections. You could have a bad navigation computer or display though, failure at this age is not uncommon.
@@E39Source thank you for your answer, but it still should works with MKI even some how better than just flashing?
@@TheKuhaPoika I have never tried it with a MKI, but the 16:9 should work fine, the refresh rates didn't change.
In order to install any navigation display, you need to already have navigation, you can't replace the stock radio with it.
***** OK, Thanks for the reply, then I go on a solution android tablet or Ipod
Does the new display in case of removal also require to pry that spring loadet thing that you did with a screwdriver???
+Sanel ikić Only the older 4:3 display has the spring loaded things.
+E39Source so how do you take off the trim around the new diplay? Thanks :)
+Sanel ikić Just pry it out from the top. It simply clips on around the 16:9 display.
Great video, well done. -currently driving an Audi S6.
Hey Ryan can I put this in my e39 540i 2000 I don't know if I have the chords and it has the BMW business tape deck
Probably the radio or navigation module.
Do you know where I can obtain a MK4 navigation system. I'm looking for one for my BMW M5 2000
as i understood i dont need to change radio block, changer and other stuff right? only new monitor
If you're chasing just the display, that's all you need to touch.
I would try to find a local BMW indy shop though, they can help.
gabryel stefan i have almost the same problem. everybody says I just need a new radio. did you fix your problem or did you buy a new one?
How do you remove the pink and blue connector from the mk3 unit, I can't get mine out, they're stuck in there and the magenta colored tab think idk what to do with it
Karim nassef Depress a small clip opposite the side of the harness that plugs in, then swing the black lever 90 degrees to push the connector free from the computer.
Just a shout out, I grew up in Stow!
is there a way to update the maps on mkIII or do i have to/ might as well upgrade to mkIV
You can get a newer map CD for the MKIII, but the MKIII doesn't read DVDs. I would highly recommend getting a MKIV and then a 2015 map DVD from Ebay.
Can I keep my stock head unit it's the 16:9 display while upgrading to the mkIV dvd thing in the trunk?
Karim nassef Yes, the MKIV was built for the 16:9 display.
is it just plug and play? to install the MKIV
Karim nassef Yup, just plug it in the two connectors that were in the MKIII.
Hi, was just wondering if I would be able to put an aftermarket stereo into my e39? It's just a simple pioneer head unit. Cheers
+Shranal Kumar it’ll work.. if you have DSP you’ll need some additional wiring and stuff I believe.
I know nothing about aftermarket head units and stereo systems- but if it's designed for the E39's electronics system, then it should would.
What if u go from no gps to gps what should i do !?
how do you determine if you have the MKI or MK II computer?
i have a stock 530i 2001, that radio you just took out ,will it fit in my car? my l.e.d. is horrible so it is pot luck on the music, tape does not work and the cd player can not read any disk.
+Cliff Weaver Does the car have navigation already? If not, It will technically fit, but not without thousands of dollars in other hardware to make it work. If the vehicle did not come with navigation, it's virtually impossible to retrofit unless your budget is unlimited.
Hi Ryan!
I was just wondering if this could be installed in a 96 e39 bmw 528i?
Thank you
If it has navigation, all of the upgrading goes the same way!
Um well it doesn't have navigation installed, does that mean id just have to install the navigation myself?
Shalaylee Hard
That's pretty much impossible. You have to remove the seats, carpeting... it'd be a huge job. You're better off to buy a car with the navigation.
how do I upgrade to navigation the full screen with tape deck that doesn't have one in 1997 540i
+mr b You must first have an E39 that came with navigation.
Just got done doing this, and the video was incredibly helpful. But I have an issue, the radio doesn't work. I can only access the menu. I can't switch over to the radio. Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix?
This job should have no effect over radio functionality. Did the radio work on the old navigation screen?
What are your thoughts on upgrading from the stock GPS Mk3 to an Android 7.1 for my 2002 540i?
I have never recommended the aftermarket units. I'm too much of an OEM guy. But if you want the features for a much more reasonable place, I can't argue with that.
They start @ around $250. If you get one, upload your review. ;) Of course if you have DSP you'll have to get an adapter or have to bypass your amp.
Where can i get the exact front display online?
The used Ebay market is the most economical. Search for "BMW E39 16:9"
+Bobby O'Hearn well wouldnt adding the computer and navigation be pretty expensive?
+isaacg4 Yes, thats why I suggest an aftermarket unit.
+Bobby O'Hearn what would I actually need to get to upgrade the display to this one? just the correct computer and mounting bracket. and then the display itself? or is the wiring just not there?
+isaacg4 Unless your car is pre wired for navigation (unlikely), you would need the entire wiring harness, as well as the computer, display, and antenna.
why did he removed all that stuff? i mean changer navigation system
This DIY is about upgrading from the MKII to MKIV, which requires removing the trimble and getting the CD changer out of the way to do that.
Is there a part number for the 16:9 display?
There are probably several. I would reference RealOEM.com for the specifics.
Hey I had a question? I have a 2001 530i with no sat nav and I was just wondering if I bought an oem screen could i use it or would it be useless?
If you have no Navigation from factory, it would be more hassle than what it's worth. I would personally explore the aftermarket offerings
Hi Ryan so I have the 4:3 right now and I'm trying to upgrade it do something newer one. But how you know most other type of radioed on the e39's they have a different wire harness so how to I convert it to because I need the larger one instead of the small one.
Upgrading to the 16:9 widescreen display is plug and play from the 4:3. The harnesses are the same.
Well I'm not trying to upgrade to an oem stereo but a pioneer head unit and like most of them they have the larger harness so are there converters for that.
Ivan Tashchuk I have no idea. All the aftermarket stuff are the biggest headaches ever, I have no idea.
I feel like just be a use this unit is a dsp type I would have run it all the way back to the amp?
Ivan Tashchuk I don't follow you. What?
My 2001 e39 530 and I want to upgrade to one of those mk iv GPS system what I need to do? My car does have either previous model of GPS nor cd changer . But there is a DSP. Any suggestions?
So you do have navigation already? If not it's very difficult to add it. If you do have it, you have the MKIII since it's a 2001. It'd be a plug and play install to get the MKIV. CD changer would be plug and play as well, as long as you're pre-wired for it. (Check for little round black plastic pre-wire logo inside the trunk on the carpeting.
l do not have Navigation, per wired only for cd changerX_X
is it possible to do a 4:3 to 16:9 display change on a e46, the trim around the radio/nav is different than a 5er
I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. You just need that different trim piece.
It is possible, I am about to do so on my 330ci. Note that E46's use a different 16:9 monitor then E39
I have a 97 528I as well... you know... two BMWs are better than one
i would like to download a newer version of the northeast USA map mine is the original one and it's very outdated
I have the 16:9 MKIV NAV Ion my 2002 E39. What's the best way to add bluetooth connectivity?
I recommend firstly adding aux, and then getting a bluetooth to aux adapter like the TuneLink Auto.
Ryan, I'm almost afraid to ask: how much and where did you buy everything?
my screen went blank on my x5 would you have any remedies
+Perla Cristo Unplug battery overnight, try again the next day. Good luck!
hey ryan can i install this in a 2002 e39 that came with buisness cd ?
***** So I guess 16:9 is in my near future. F the MKIV! LOL
***** will the 16:9 work with MKIII & MKII because i have the smaller nav and i want to upgrade to the wider one ( bmw 540i sport 2000 )

obviously i know that i would be losing my 6cd changer and mk computer, but that doesnt mather? or is it mandatory to be plug for the car to work fine?
or simply can i put an original 16:9 with updating the computer?
bradcabe No idea about aftermarket stuff. If it's listed to fit E39, then it will. I would personally do 16:9 and MKIV computer with the latest software.
***** one question.. if i have the 4:3 screen . could i upgrade it to the 16:9 with out changing the computer to a MKIII or MKIV? just using the one i have installed originally in the trunk?
bradcabe Yes, that would be plug and play.
i have a question.....2001 bmw 740il i just got the mk4 yesterday i installed it.took of antenna trimbell thing and installed on dvd nav but its still stuck in tennesee were it came from in im california. i held menu button for hidden menu and it says receiver error....? like its stuck in that state. when i go to view map.whats the kit or adaptor you mention in the begining of the video at 33-35 second time frame? the radio stays on and all the stations plays everything else works fine even aux fan timer.could it be i need a update dvd disc? or would i need to upgrade to 16:9 i dont like that screen as i lose the oem wood trim
