Great video- totally resonates. My question would be:: how do you know what platform ( social) to really focus on to find your ideal customer? I'm realizing that maybe RUclips and Pinterest probably would've been more strategic this past year with my limited amount of time and creating more "evergreen" content than spending so much time on Instagram! Haha oh those silly time consuming reels!... I like what you said, be decisive! Thank you for sharing!

Great advice Gillian for anyone getting started for sure. One thing I would focus on when starting your business is ... like Gillian says ... making sales. An example of this that I recommend to my students for anyone wanting to start an online course is to make a beta version of your course where you pre-sell the course sharing the general outline of your course. Then do 5-8 live recorded sessions where you deliver your course and answer any questions live. Record these sessions to create your evergreen course later. During the course of the course do this:
    1. send out a quick survey to your students with a general outline of what they will be learning in the first lesson and ask them for their biggest challenges in that area and any related lessons they would like to learn.
    2. Take that feedback and add it to your curriculum for that lesson.
    3. Send a follow up survey after the lesson to ask if the lesson was helpful and any other questions they may still have that they need answers to. Then use that data to improve your course over time. You can do a 10 minute recap with the added answers at the beginning of your next lesson.
    4. Rinse and repeat. Do these same steps for all of the lessons in your course. At the end of your course you'll have a fully built out, value deep course that you can now set up to sell on autopilot giving you the time you need to revamp your course, make any updates or changes and then move on to your next course.
This was a great video today Gillian, and perfect timing. I just finished doing my own how to start an online business video series on my channel, I will make sure to recommend this video to my viewers. Big hugs 🤗

Absolutely silly advice. Who would purchase a non-existent course from an unknown person? Just think about it: would YOU give ME money, let's say $400, for a course that doesn't even exist...? Most likely you wouldn't. But would you give $400 to Elon Musk for an unfinished course, that will be released in October, and the final price is $2000. Probably yes.
Pre-sale only works for people / companies who are known, and they have built trust over the years. Someone who is starting out - and is completely unknown - will fail with this kind of strategy. If you are new, you'll need to have a good product first, and only then you can sell.

    • @AmandavanderGulik

@@stevenp6761 Yes exactly, that's why you build your audience first to build that know, like and trust.
Put your focus on creating good, quality content that you hand out for free (for example in your RUclips videos, or in pdf's, checklists, etc.) this will help you build your email list as well. You get to know your potential clients, their needs, their wants, their desires and dreams.
That when you start figuring out how you can help them. Once you have a handle on what your audience wants, that's when you offer a Beta pre-sell of your course or product.
You are honest with them. You tell them the topic you will be helping them with and ask for feedback of what else they would like to have included.
You give them a special grandfathered-in pre-sell price point to make it exciting for them to be on the ground floor.
Then you release content to them each week. You give them your first lesson, ask for feedback, then add anything that they need into your second lesson and so on.
The point here is to sell the product before you create it so that first of all you have some beginning sales but secondly so that they are helping you create the best product out there.
They will invest in you because you have already built that know, like and trust with your great, quality free content that has already helped them.
I 100% agree that no one will buy a non-existent product from someone they don't know. Absolutely. That's why you first take the time to prove to them that you can genuinely help them.
Plus a bonus about creating a product course this way is that your pre-sell buyers will now feel like they are a part of creating the product and because you are honestly taking their advice, ideas, questions into consideration and answering them all in your new course, they will become your biggest promoters! It's a win-win.
They get in at a great price and get amazing quality personal service from you and you get instant buyers and long term promoters.
The first time I did this was way back in 2007 when we didn't have nearly as many outlets of social media as we have today. It was pretty much Facebook, blogs and RUclips.
I created blog posts with helpful content about raising money smart kids, and at the same time I built a Facebook page devoted to the same.
I took the time to answer questions, did some additional research on what parents were searching for when it came to wanting to teach their kids about money.
Then I created an outline of a parent's guide book to help them teach their kids about money and I pre-sold this to the small audience I was building on Facebook and on my blog.
Back then I only really used RUclips to publish content for my Facebook and blogs not really using it to it's full capacity that we can do now.
I sold 50 pre-sale copies. I was absolutely shocked! I hadn't really believed it would work for me either but my mentors had taught me to do it and I just followed their advice and it actually worked.
I've done it the other way around too, taking months, sometimes years, to build out elaborate membership courses and then tried to market them.
It worked but not nearly as well and I got a lot more comments from people wishing my course had this or that in it. By not pre-selling and taking them along for the journey I missed out on those important details, plus it took me forever to make those first sales.
That's why I now always suggest you co-create and pre-sell with your clients. Just make sure to build up that know, like and trust first.
Give and you shall received. I hope that helps. 🤗
