    About Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey:
    Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, COSMOS will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It will bring to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transport viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale. COSMOS will invent new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invent celebrated elements of the legendary original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination. The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

    Could pass through 100 LIGHT YEARS of STEEL without slowing down. The vast majority of human brains have not evolved to comprehend such things.
    1. Imagine how far light can travel in 100 years.
    2. Replace that distance with solid steel.
    3. Imagine a "smaller than an atom" particle travelling through that steel with ease.
    4. Certain brains on this planet thought of ways to have the ability to detect those particles!!!!

    it's amazing how we cannot find these neutrinos. they happen randomly during beta decay, and we have come close to creating one by the production of the positron (depending on what you view close as, and how you view antimatter vs. elementary particles of matter such as the neutrino). I hope one day we can capture and further study these leptons.

    Hey kids, neutrinos are one of the dark matter components adding to the expansion of the universe otherwise the acceleration of the expansion of the universe in its uneven expansion therein. While weakly interaction it is interaction nonetheless.

    Can a neutrino pass through a black hole? Or a neutron star?
    Would a cubic lightyear worth of steel collapse into a black hole?

    • @puppetsock
      @puppetsock 10 лет назад +12

      No, a neutrino can't pass through a black hole. (Good catch on the spelling.) Of course, if you take into account Hawking radiation, the experiment becomes massively hard to do. Hawking showed, back in the 1980s, that a black hole will evaporate due to quantum effects. Basically, quantum uncertainty applies to the location of the horizon. (Please don't ask me to explain the math. I barely understand the first page, and I have a PhD in particle physics.) So sometimes a quantum pair is generated and one side runs away taking some of the black hole's mass. And sometimes the thing that goes away is a neutrino. So you would have a very hard time telling the neutrino you just shot in from one of the ones that were being radiated away.
      Yes, a cubic light year of steel would collapse into a black hole. But it would take a while.
