- Hello Travelers,
I boarded Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas in August of 2022. This video shows our adventures with using a mobility scooter on the ship.
If you’ve seen some of the other videos in this series, you know that my Dad is having some health issues, and was supposed to be on the cruise with us. I thought it would be a good idea to rent a mobility scooter because the ship is big, and my Dad is not great at walking distances just now. He wasn’t too thrilled at the idea of using a scooter, but I kept the rental just in case.
Well, he didn’t get to come on the cruise with us after all, as the doctor told him he wasn’t safe to cruise at this time. But I still had to scooter, and wanted to make a video showing some of the challenges of using one on a cruise ship. People use them all the time on ships, and knowing what you might be facing can’t hurt.
Most challenging was finding enough space in the elevators. Sometimes you will need to wait until there is an elevator empty enough to use. Consider going the opposite direction you need if the elevator is open and the ones going your direction aren’t. You can always ride it to the end and then send it back the way you need it to go.
While navigating around the ship is largely pretty easy, the other challenge we saw was in using the restrooms. Some of the public restrooms had enough space for the scooter to be driven in, but lacked a handicapped stall. I did find one that was large enough later on when we didn’t have the scooter with us, and I filmed that as well.
Then, to add to the fun, the scooter vanished twice. Once it was the crew, but the other time, it was just stolen. The security personnel took our report, and in about 3 hours, were able to locate and return it to us. What a relief! I was very glad that I had opted for the full insurance when I booked it. I recommend anyone renting a scooter do the same for just this reason.
Please like this video and subscribe to my channel to make sure you don’t miss future content. I have more videos for this cruise, as well as future cruises booked through the rest of this year and beyond. Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for sharing. Dad is turning 80, we are going on a cruise and this video is very helpful to prepare us since we rented a scooter too!😊
Glad it was helpful!
I just added this video I made of a handicapped accessible cabin on Carnival Mardi Gras. ruclips.net/video/P1YoMUisALg/видео.html
I always book a handicap accessible room because i rent a scooter. The cabin doors are wider and they offer plenty of space for the scooter and for people to safely move around. My husband and i both used scooters. Even with 2 scooters we gad plenty of room.
I think that is the best way to do it, really. The scooter just doesn't fit in a standard room.
They need cup holders on them. You can carry a drink and walk, but it’s hard to drive the scooter with a drink. I spilled a coffee all over the floor outside our cabin.
That would be useful!
When entering, a elevator, always enter in reverse, so that you can pull out safely. Also, in a crowded area, it is best to have one person in your group walk about 56 feet in front of the scooter. Eliminates a lot of problems.
some of the issues are the very reason why i use a powered wheelchair instead, had a great cruise with Celebrity Edge using this method
I’ve just got a folding scooter, I’m going to put a bell on mine so that people can hear me coming. Perhaps they should have folding scooter, they take up less room.
You never leave it outside of your cabin. Plug it in yourself.
I purchased my own travel mobility scooter. Why? As a Travel Advisor I am traveling 30-40 times a year. I use my scooter when I’m home if I go somewhere somewhere requiring a lot of walking or standing. Rental fees are in excess of purchase costs ($400-$4000). I use my scooter for excursions and tours on other travel as well. On River Cruises you can’t take a mobility scooter period. AMA has one of their own they will put on your tour bus so you can join the tours, if you book it in advance.
Have you had any issues with airlines damaging your equipment? I had a friend who had some issues with her mobility equipment and the airlines seemed to have it in for wheelchairs.
can i ask how you rented one. was it through the cruise line??? i have trouble standing for long periods so i could really use one when i got on my cruise in october.
I used Scootaround.com. Here is the video I made about renting the scooter: ruclips.net/video/4CIb52bjfs0/видео.html
You may rent from "Scoot Around: or "Special Needs at Sea". They will customize your scooter to your height and weight. It will be in your Cabin or outside it if you didn't order a Accessible Cabin. Always try to booked a Accessible Cabin.
Do those things not have mirrors?
@@cruisecrazy7066 not usually
@@SoloSueTravels Maybe they should have. A new accessory.
@@cruisecrazy7066 some even have bells or horns to let people know when you are behind them. Mirrors would be useful.
🛳🛳🛳

You never leave a scooter in the hallway it’ll be stolen. If you try you can get it in your room door . I rent them every cruise. It’ll work fine if your bed is over by the balcony you can park it by the desk where you can plug it in . You can bring the scooter off the ship in ports , but don’t park it and leave the key with it if you need to leave it outside a shop or restaurant. Always buy the extra insurance incase it’s stollen you’ll be good with the rental company. If you think you can’t maneuver it through the door of your state room, have your Stewart help you there are not that heavy. The hard part is holding your door open at the same time if you’re trying to go in if you’re by yourself
Yeah, we definitely experienced the part about the scooter going missing after being left in the hall. We didn't take it out to the ports, but thanks for the advice. I agree, the insurance is definitely worth the purchase just for piece of mind.
I find the steward will bring a door stop so you can enter and exit easier, alone.
I wonder if you have an airtag from luggage if you can somehow hide it on the scooter so that if its gone you can trace it down, maybe not exactly where if someone put it in an room but maybe a clue to where it is.... those i think work off bluetooth so maybe (i hope) it wouldn't require having internet package to locate it?
That would be really interesting to test. I don’t know how well signal travels through metal bulkheads, but I would be curious to find out.
I tape an airtag to the bottom of my scooter seat. Works great.
We had a problem passing cleaning carts in the corridors. Just about every corridor had multiple cleaning carts, often with no steward in sight!
Yes, they can make it difficult for people walking to get by, much less someone using a mobility device.
I find when they see me they will move the cart closer to the wall or in the doorway area to allow me to pass.
I can’t tell you how upsetting it is when you have your own wheelchair and you can’t get past a scooter parked in a hallway. Most hallways are so narrow. We have had to go up a floor and to another elevator to get to our room before. I don’t know what would happen in an emergency. That’s why they need to be in your room.
Very interesting, but found the use of the word handicapped quite old fashioned. In UK & Ireland we say disabled.
Yes, they are called Mobility devices 😊
Here at my house in the U.S. we say differently abled. I can do lots you can not 10 years on wheels❤
Handicapped is so offensive and is an absolute insult to people who have a physical condition.
Leaving a scooter in corridor creates a hall blockage for others. I have used my own personal scooter around the world. Virgin Voyages has parking space and plug outside every cabin door. An accessible room has more space. I’m not understanding why you can’t find space in your cabin. I’ve never had a problem and I had a smaller self folding and now a larger scooter. I do get irritated when the Excursion desk staff tell you no wheel chairs or scooters on tours but the tour driver says it’s fine! Having to deal with mobility issues is
hard enough without having to deal with unnecessary lack of accessibility!
I think the idea of having a parking space and a plug is wonderful!
I was on NCL. They offered to keep it elsewhere & all I had to do was call Guest Services to drop it off & pick it up as needed. But I wasn’t told this until I got onboard.
Good to know how other lines handle it. Thanks!
I use a scooter on cruise ships, and store in the room if I get a handicap room, but even an inside I had room to park close to my bed and charge there too, I really love carnival’s Panorama’s handicap room I got one time, room 10201, front facing with a window, it was usage, even a automatic door opener. I went solo to Mexico and if the wife would have come we would have no problem moving about in the cabin. One think I really hate are elevator rushers, sitting there waiting to get in and people think they should get in before me,or people not letting others get off first and rushing in. But I had a great time with the rented scooter in fact I bought one for cruising only and have another one coming that’s bigger faster etc for around my home community.
Yeah the elevator rushers are a real problem. That room on Panorama sounds awesome!
Please do not use the word handicapped! It's 2024 for petes sake
I did not mean to offend. This is the terminology my friends who use these devices have used with me. What is a preferred term?
Thank you good to know what scooter company did you use?
I used Scootaround dot com.
@@SoloSueTravels thanks I just booked with them.
We were told up front that keeping the scooter in the hall was not allowed in our ship. I needed one due to arthritis in my knee and could not do all the walking. It was very painful going to ports and not being able to take it. Maybe we could have but it seemed it would be difficult.
Since I posted this video, Carnival has made a rule that if the scooter won't fit through the cabin door, it can't come on the ship. They are also renting scooters that will fit at the port apparently, but who knows if there will be many available, but it might be something to look into. Here is their policy: www.carnival.com/about-carnival/special-needs/wheelchair-users
@@SoloSueTravels my scooter fit thru the door. But it’s about impossible to get in without help since doors won’t stay open. It wasn’t fun trying to navigate often.
@@SoloSueTravels I have to add, I really appreciated this video! Thanks!
My question is that when you go to the restaurant or pool side and wanna lay on a chair where can you park the scooter? I have heart problems and sometimes walking long distances is hard and I'm booking my first solo cruise for 14 days. But I mean do the ships have a parking spot for scooters
@@MarionLuther-i5t they do not have designated spots, but there is usually enough open space to find a place where you aren’t too far from it.
