ADV Motorcycle Travel to Alaska - Too Much Gear?

- In 2020 I did a 10,000-mile, 5-week trip to Alaska on a BMW R1200 GS Adventure. Most people would say I took way too much gear with hard cases and two SW-MOTECH 350 Dry Bags. What do YOU think?
Bring what you want. People will ALWAYS say "you carry too much". Even if it was just a poncho and Swiss army knife, someone out there will still say "too much". And the funny part is, they haven't even attempted what you accomplished. I am doing this trip on my 2007 KLR 650 in Aug 2024. I will bring what I want, I always do. I commend you for doing it YOUR WAY
Impressive ! And I thought I was a madman ! Thinking of taking my K1600 on this trip but would stay on the pavement. Just not sure because the tarmac is an unknown to me…it’s so much fun when smooth and curvy …still debating this. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for doing the vid
We have all done the same! I did a similar trip with too much gear also. We learn from these adventures and pack accordingly the next time and then the next... what a memory, though, right?! I have a 2016 R1200 GSA, and I wouldn't sell it for the world. These bikes were made to haul cargo, lol
I am heading to Alaska in about 7 weeks, and I also will be packing a fair amount of gear., We are camping majority of nights and I am bringing all my own freeze dried food with me, I have a freeze drier! Your video is just one of many I have been watching to try and get my packing as optimized as possible.
I wouldn‘t take as much gear with like you did if I were driving a truck 😂. I travel with panniers only (the vario ones, not the ones you have which load more) and still feel like a glamper. At the end of the day the most important thing is that you had fun.
My tip: You can browse hiking & backpacking forums/youtube to find small-packing lightweight gear. I‘m sure if budget wasn‘t a concern, you could go with the panniers only.

Having backpacked for many years, I have the advantage of having very good ultralight gear and I travel much lighter. Each to their own, but I would find it too much of a burden and risk to carry so much gear, especially off road solo. Light is might!
Did a 10week trip around the States last year. 10 000miles on a 1190Adv. Lived in my tent every night, cooking my own meals. Best thing after a day on the road is to relax in a comfy chair. You have to live comfotable even while on the road. As you, I was on my own so some gear you hopefully will not need still had to be brought along.
All it maters is what you think after you came back. Going solo, you better be prepare.. cheers

Tyler thanks for sharing. good info for me here. I'm planning a 4+ week trip to Alaska this summer. I Have a 2019 GS1250 and like you I love the off road .. I have found the GS can be a challenge on some tough double track or single track ( I've tried). So I also purchased a KTM 890r but kept my GS. so for my Alaska trip I will take my GS. I use the KTM for a lot of my local or shorter mountain trips, its also my go to bike for BAJA...again thanks for sharing. Oh, what time of year did you go and how was the bug situation in Alaska.

I think that is always better have it than not .....
I disagree. Less is more. I backpack and would rather pack my bike with the same exact stuff as when backpacking. With the exception of riding gear, some tools, maintenance items and minimal critical spares for the bike. Less junk to fuss with = more time to spend enjoying myself. Less weight eats less fuel and makes the riding more enjoyable. To each his own.
How long did it take you? I'm planning a similar trip next year, but I'll be heading out of Detroit. Right now I'm looking at about 6 weeks total time.

What was the camping grill you had there that was a simple post and rotation grill? That looks perfect for some simple cooking.

How did the Yeti cooler work? I assume it's 12VDC. I need to carry some medicines that have to stay cool and was wondering if this would be the way to go.
I also have medicine I need to carry and keep cool, was wondering about that cooler as well.
Did you take extra fuel? Did you need to? My k1600 b has a 7 gallon tank & I am heading out in June on the Alcan hwy.

I cheated, my wife brought the car, so although I just used the vario panniers.
Which I took off the bike and left in the car for the Dempster. You still have way more comfort gear than we took. We slept in the car quite a few times.
The way I look at it is 150 is the weight of a passenger except lower. No big thing.
