That cat wasn't confused about anything at all. It stayed right there in the face of a loud, angry human for more than ten minutes. It knew exactly what it was doing and the outcome it wanted. That cat wasn't interested in leaving. Just watch the ears. And the flattening against the ground. It tested him over and over.
      If he's backing up and trips, it's over. The wildlife biologists will all tell you "stand your ground". If that doesn't work, you have to get aggressive and convince the cat there are easier meals to be had elsewhere. No offense, Conny, but your advice in a situation like that would probably get someone killed. Maybe it would be best if you let the professional wildlife folks provide the guidance on such matters rather than offering your emotionally-based advice. It's misplaced.

    Cougars are one of the most curious predators out there. They tend to examine creatures they encounter and size them up for what kind of value they offer. I know cougars in Texas are less likely to hunt livestock than they are to hunt wild prey. The main reason is because to the Cougar, a herd of cattle seems a lot more threatening than a lone boar and unlike a true African Lion that is far larger and usually has a pride for teamwork taking on herds- Cougars hunt alone and even they realize that groups of prey are harder to hunt.
    Because of this- Cougars need to analyze their prey first and ensure it is an easy meal. This makes them hesitant to kill right away, but also makes them stay longer and be less likely to budge from loud noises as their intention is to study you.
    To the predator, humans are just like upright squawking birds. Eventually they realize it's just a display- but are still to cautious to charge upfront so they wait for you to tire yourself out and turn around. That's why in this video the Cougar tried to appear docile and just lay down to wait until he were done, then they would have pounced. They are dangerously patient that way.
    It's a case that goes to show how sometimes predators can be too smart for their own good- But not smart enough to know what humans can have on hand to protect ourselves.

    The one thing I think I would have done differently (again, easy to say that NOW), would have been to throw rocks or sticks or something at the cat. Every time it advanced and the only response it got was yells, it became bolder.

    I never got to see the one that pounced me until too late. Bear spray saved me.
    Things I learned that day- Don't go out alone if possible, make noise so they hear you and leave, carry a weapon or bear spray, dont wear red-they think you're wounded and an easy meal, if you have pets at home wear fresh clothing without pet hair-you will smell like their choice snack, look behind you often, don't bend down to pick up cool rocks, walk briskly with a purpose-don't wander slowly down the trail, yelling and screaming is useless, smashing them in the head with your cell phone only breaks your phone and you can't call for help, never run-it triggers their instinct to chase you, if you find a dead animal leave the area-it may be protecting its kill.
    2 surgeries later, I'm hiking the trails again but much more aware. I won't go without bear spray! Avoid spraying yourself, you'll practically suffocate and it doesn't wash off or wear off for days, people will have watery eyes and burning throat from being around you. You will also be photographed by every wildlife agency and law enforcement, then they lock'n'load and hunt down the cat. Lose-lose for all. The 'fear' the animals smell is the cortisol chemical your body releases when you're terrified. Learn from my mistake and don't end up like me.
    Happy trails!🐾

      Having been face to face with a cougar holding a gun, one thing I can guarantee is that air horn will feel awfully inadequate in your hand at that point in time. If the animal is as close as it appears in the video, making a loud noise hardly guarantees it won't get startled and attack. At that range I wouldn't even risk a warning shot, even though that has worked successfully for me at more distance.

    • @charlesritter6640
      @charlesritter6640 4 года назад +2

      @@fiveowaf454 I've always said that a gun is actually better for the animals too, because you never have to actually use it on them if you are paying attention to your surroundings anyway. The noise from a warning shot will scare the shit out of any animal and it won't hurt them at all. Whereas bear spray will seriously fuck up an animals nose and eyes which they need to hunt food. Much more humane to carry a gun.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 4 года назад

      @@charlesritter6640 Paying attention to your surroundings is always key anywhere, but for certain using a warning shot early on in proceedings ensures everyone goes home safely and still helps make the animal wary of humans. Having to wait until an animal moves in and then spraying it with bear spray is not without many negatives for the animal and therefore should be avoided if possible. Personally I think if dangerous animal encounters are likely (particularly big bears), having a firearm and spray is the way to go then you have all bases covered. If I can only have one, I'm going with the gun.

      @@markhansen3111 I always carry my 44 mag in remote places for that very reason. I found from my one encounter with a cougar where I felt threatened, that a warning shot, before it got really close, had it high tailing out of there. I don't want to have to shoot anything and am not a hunter, but do believe in protecting myself and my family. The additional positive to a warning shot, beyond the obvious benefit of not being attacked, is that it I believe it scares the animal and helps reinforce a fear of humans that will ultimately benefit both the animal and any other people it comes into contact with.

    I applaud you for waiting as long as you did, but I also applaud you for taking the shot. You didn't take the shot until you thought you were about to properly go over the edge and lose control of yourself or the cougar.
    But I also applaud the fact that you didn't wait to take the shot when the cougar pounced, but took the shot before she pounced. If you thought you could have waited to take the shot during her attack, it's highly likely you would have missed your mark and have been killed. And even if you somehow created a miracle and got your mark, you would still probably have gotten injured before it succumbed.
    You took the shot at a time when you were able to make the kill and when you had the control of yourself and the cougar. In my eyes, you did everything right. I hate seeing them killed, and I can see that you do too. You're a responsible hunter, a compassionate altruistic unselfish hunter, as well as a smart and practical one.
