Great topic and always asked this question. As you and Chris said, this can be a touchy subject, but as long as you get the permissions, and in some cases, I get it in writing as well. I've had pissed off residents come at me, I showed them my permission to land and they went away. Another thing I always discuss a lot about is the Emergency landing. You guys touched on this at the end of the video. So important. As students, they always have that feeling they'll get in trouble, but as we teach, and as the industry emphasizes, Land the Helicopter! If you have an emergency OR you're getting weather that's just too dangerous to continue, Land the Helicopter. And, remember the phrase, "I'm making a precautionary landing". In your POH's, there are several emergencies that tell you to land immediately or land as soon as practical. If you can't get back to the airport and have to set it down, find a safe place, away from people, equipment, buildings if possible and set it down. Yes you may get that initial grief, Law Enforcement may show up. Stay calm, be respectful of property owners and Law Enforcement and explain the situation. This happened to me one time and the pissed off property owner wouldn't stop yelling at me. When I finally told him, your parking lot was the safest place to land and if I'd waited much longer I may have crash landed on his property. Which is worse for everyone? He toned it down and started listening to reason. Its a touchy subject, but always be prepared for that "Precautionary Landing". Remember it. Your following the rules of your POH and keeping you, your crew, your passengers and your aircraft safe. Will keep you out of trouble. Fly safe folks!
I second that :) I have a check ride coming up soon and I'm guessing the answer would be FAR doesn't say where we can land but the AIM portion sure tells us where we can not land (AIM 7-4-6) ? My instructor says if it's federal land it belongs to the tax payer and since that's us we can land on it (given we don't pose hazard to person or property of course). But maybe the truly correct way would be contacting headquarters of BLM in Colorado Springs (I'm in Colorado) so they are aware and than they tell us to contact this local city hall or whoever has authority over that federal land and deal with them - local ordinances etc. And also - since I will be now (hopefully) a commercial pilot - can I land on this BLM land with paying passengers on board (like for example I'm complying with part 119.1 (e) 7 I through VII one of those 6x per year I got permitted by fsdo and the 2passangers want to be dropped off on BLM land)? That would be No,not with paying passengers, correct? Maybe I'm overthinking it but my instructor asks me these tricky questions and this is my research on this subject but if someone can correct me or add their 2 cents I'd appreciate it! :-) Cheers!
@@evaroderick7111 I would not land on federal property without permission. I would not go with your instructor's logic. If you land on Federal Property without permission, expect to be detained and questioned for a period of time.
So, no off field landings during deer season? LOL I appreciate this one as it is a question I have had and this has been a well covered answer. Thank you
Just past the Golden Gate Bridge there's an old lighthouse (well it used to be, they tore down the building years ago, now there's just a big flat "inviting" platform). Everytime I'd fly past I'd be tempted to set it down, just for the hell of it, but was always worried I'd get in trouble (same reason I never flew under the bridge),...? :( Those old ships they used to have in that naval graveyard in Suisun Bay always looked tempting too, but,...? :-)
A guy down the road from me got his neighbors all fired up launching and landing his helicopter in his yard. They filmed him and put it on RUclips, lol. FAA got called - they come in and find out the guy has NO LICENSE to fly! He had it revoked for stealing a helicopter from a local airport in '00. He also claimed he was in black ops, lol. Sounds like a stand-up guy, hahaha! Here's a link to the article - the RUclips vid link is in there: www.masslive.com/worcester/2019/05/mass-man-accused-of-illegally-flying-helicopter-from-backyard-stole-a-helicopter-in-2000-claimed-he-was-member-of-black-ops-team-authorities-say.html Great vid as usual, guys. Loving this series!
Can you discuss flying helicopters then fixed wing on a daily basis! Not training after training and licensing back and forth, one day (or morning) fixed next day (or afternoon same day) helicopters? Like driving a car then stopping and immediately driving a motorcycle??? How does the body and reaction handle the switch?
I'm moving to Hawaii and am buying a helicopter instead of a new truck ( about the same price) it's going to be a blast How many emergency landings is to many 😃
Kenny and pal. Do you think there is such a thing in having land.because he or she did very well at school. They have land because they are rich.with a good job. A person who as struggled at school.will probably will be poor with very little money. Philip thinks at the end of the day it is God's land.philip thinks you should land if it is safe to do so. Take care and keep safe pals philip.
Fantastic as always KK and Chris! Thanks for putting so much into these videos!
Our pleasure!
Great information! Appreciate y’all going into detail and providing examples 👍🚁

This is awesome, thanks!

Thank you for these daily videos. I think it would also be beneficial to address public lands- US Forest Service, BLM, recreation areas, etc...
Travis, thanks for the comment.

This was a great video
Glad you enjoyed it Thank you!
Where do you find the local ordinance? Are you finding them both county and city ordinances online?
Yes you would need to check with the city and county admistrations.
What about lakes? Or bodies of water? I wonder the jurisdiction over watee?
Again it depends. There can be restrictions. I pilot needs to check each situation prior to flight.
I'd like to know what are things in Europe.
Can u hover above and drop a ladder? A hypothetical question.
As long as you don't endanger anyone or anything on the ground

Randy, a pilot who switches aircraft daily needs to be very well versed in procedures so as not to do the wrong thing. Must be cautious.
And yes Randy we will add this topic to the Daily Flight Brief list of upcoming videos!
@@HelicopterGround flying my king air to the airport then flying my Bell home
Thats awesome! Great topic. Wa are going to cover this topic in the daily brief.
Randy we cover your question in EP 19 at: ruclips.net/video/txqv5bdqOBI/видео.html
