  • A human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has berated the action of the security agents particularly the operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) over the extortion of money from passengers coming into the country at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.
He described the action of the officers as ridiculous and embarrassing to the entire country.
Olajengbesi, an Abuja-based lawyer, disclosed this in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday following an encounter at the arrival wing of the airport where some DSS operatives allegedly begged for money from those arriving in the country.
Olajengbesi described the trend as shocking just as he called on the Director-General of the service to live up to the expectations and act swiftly in redeeming the image of the agency.

I'm afraid to say that the begging in Nigeria is quite overwhelming. I see a lot of improvements but still airport staff openly beg which is embarrassing.

Only in Nigeria they check your bag when you're going and when you're coming back , they don't do that abroad both when you're going and when you're coming back our system must change for better

I just imagine a CBSA taking CAD$ from you even if you offered it, haaa you will be arrested on the spot. You are not even suppose to offer them tip cos they hold the national security of Nigeria in their hand

They have no shame. The first time my children traveled to Nigeria, after seeing what happened at the airport they vowed never to step to that country again.
Its a shame... they cook up stories from you've over stayed or your visa is not valid. Visa given to me by Nigeria embassy here in Canada

I love Obiajulu’s last point. How can you be planning your life on another person’s pocket. Like planning your wedding on monies you expect to get from friends and family.
Hope you know that customs and immigration officers lobby to get posted to the airport.

when I was going back they made us wait in line for hours after sometimes I noticed some of the Nigerian behind me was paying the airline agent to let them skip the lines and they’re were telling me everyone will go through when I try to complain. Lagos international airport needs to do better and stop this act.

No one is addressing the problem. The officers get their duty assignments based on their daily or weekly returns (share of the extorted money) that they make to the boss. If the officer fail to deliver, they are immediately re-assigned. Meanwhile, the public blame the frontline officers, while the real culprit is sitting somewhere in the office out of public view and scrutiny.

That is not extortion, it is the prevailing culture. Let it happy, at least they don't force money off you. Consider the state d'affaires of the economy and perhaps also their meagre wages. So if the system wouldn't help them out then I suppose somebody who can do does. The general trade off is armed robbery everywhere else: on the streets, on your way to work, church, market; or even at your homes until no one is truly safe. Address things from the ground up, top down and this extortion as you call it is soon eliminated.
So really the country should not really be a country of beggars as we've really turned it into.
    Your choice though

One of the reasons l stopped going via Lagos is just the experience of how we are treated by the immigration officers. You will be lucky to spend less than 10th naira from checking in to boarding your flight. Abuja seems more civilised but when you are going back they still want o ask you for some money for carrying food that you are entitled to carry.

I agree with the caller who had a better experience at Abuja, that was my story too and this was in 2021. The overall experience was better at Abuja even though I still dropped something small to the baggage people at the beginning of the gate. No one else inside disturbed me although a few workers stylishly begged, someone (i believe a cleaner or airline ground staff) gave me a pen to fill out a form and begged for money... In all I repeat, compared to Lagos, Abuja airport offered a far better experience

It's extortion. I remember vividly 2016 when I m about to travel to Europe through MMA. First was the Airliners who said I should give them 30k, secondly when going through the customs, one of them( a woman) said I should settle or else I remain there and d funniest thing I have just 30 minutes left for my flight to take off. I had to give her 20£

The airport staff still needs to do better. I was extorted for bribe by a custom officer at Muritala airport this past June. I had nothing to declare in my bag. They had scanned my boxes but because I was looking kind of lost trying to find where my airline booth is located. The guy called me and lied to me that he had the right to check my bags and I asked what for? Because I know I don’t anything to declare in my bags. He said, he doesn’t want trouble or delay me but I should give them something and I can go. I couldn’t be bothered I just gave him 1k and laughed and walked off. So sad😂😂

The plain clothes guys who you are sent to meet before you meet the immigration officials are DSS officials. I am surprised Morayo does not know this. Also, what you tend to see is more of a friendly-style approach. This is far different from the police approach on the road when they delay you for no reason, which is outright extortion.

A lot at the airport is happening, they know you ladies are popular on TV. Even when entering the airport with your love ones, they will ask for money or you go in alone or with your loads. Now entering the airport, the costoms will tell you to give them money or the seized the loads and a lot more before locating your flight. So Nigerians are used to it which is very difficult it to be stop. To me, everyone in the airport are corrupted.

This has been going on, literally, for decades! Its not a trend. Its not increasing and its not decreasing. It has been like that for long. In fact, after close to 30 years traveling through the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, I'm afraid the bribery, extortion, and corruption at that airport may never change.
