Sieges often make for the most memorable battles, especially in videogames. Everyone loves holding fortifications or assaulting them and sending thousands of troops to their probably certain death to try to break through or hold tough defenses!

Fortifications shouldn't be seen as purely defensive. They are military bases that can be used to attack throughout their area of operation. Troops might then retreat to safety in the fortress. That's one thing that makes a siege worth doing.

From ancient times until the coming of the Geneva conventions siege warfare had a whispered at rule that if the defenders surrendered without a fight they and their city or fortification would be spared. However if there was a refusal that led to a hard assault the attackers would be unofficially allowed to raise the blood red flag of no quarter and subsequently subject the defenders to massacre and other atrocities. 'The ram has touched the wall'. This 'rule' was infamously the M.O of the Mongols and then Mexican general Santa Anna followed it ruthlessly as well in the age of the musket.

The best historical siege defense I've heard about was in China where the defending force heavily outnumbered left the gate open and just one man to greet the invading army and invite them to enter. The invaders were so freaked out they decided that the defenders must have been far stronger than they'd thought and decided to leave the city alone... 😅

How come Julius Caesar's double siege of Alesia and Mehmed II's siege of Constantinople are not mentioned? Both spurred innovative tactics and both changed the course of history. Caesar walled the Gaul armies up inside the town. Then he walled his own army inside a second wall to defend against the expected arrival of Celtic reinforcements. And in 1453 the fall of Constantinople allowed the Ottomans to incur further into Europe and to remain there ffor almost 600 years. To me those are both watershed sieges.

There was an uprising inside the fort and it took a week for the Americans to take back the fort. Theere were coalition air strikes on the fort and the walls were still standing. Don't underestimate a fort even in today's age.
