I'm a chef, and it was actually my first taste of كبة that got me interested in middle eastern food. I went to the owner and asked if I could work for free so I could learn how to make the food. They let me in and it turned into my first mentorship when I was 15. I have been in love with the culture ever since.
When are you going to teach us Portuguese? And how to make bacalao?
Hi Maha. In Syria, we call it Labneh, not Labaneh. Shawarma in Turkish is basically döner (şavurma). Kebab is kebap which is different. I’m a native Arab who speaks Turkish as well. Also bulgur is correct but in Turkish. 😊
Im Syrian from Australia and yes we say Labni. Lebanese also say Labni
bulgur comes from Arab برغل (burḡul) which comes from Persian برغول (barğūl)
Ok whats the probrem if we palestinians say labaneh!
This is really how we say it!
@@maimohammed529 there's no problem! Just the claim in the video that labneh is wrong is incorrect.
Yes, the thing that some do forget is that there's several dialects of Arabic. My family is half from Bagdhad and also Morocco; there's different pronunciations for many dishes and words in general. I think perhaps instead of saying that the rest of the Middle Eastern world is "mispronounce" these things, just perhaps offer as alternatives or how your region says these things. I also don't recall being "upset" when people mispronounce hummus, but i guess priorities? 😂
I mispronounce all of them, now on purpose because my Arabic wife find it adorable 😂
Mashallah
😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋
mashallah
Lovely
I have a Latina wife and do the same thing. Saying tortilla like Godzilla is my favorite. Also, I always talk about obviously Americanized Mexican foods, like the offerings from Taco Bell and so on, to be just like her Abuela used to make. Yeah, she barely puts up with me most days.
When I go to Europe or America, I have to pronounce our Arabic food the way they say it so they could understand lol
in germany if you ask for sharwarma, you will get shawarma, but to get kebab, you need to ask for döner (turkish) which is a type of kebab in a flatbread invented in berlin.
I really appreciate your videos. My partner is Palestinian and Egyptian and your videos have helped me to speak the language so much better.
In Canada shawarma and kebab are called by their proper names by everyone and is one of the most common fast foods. Zatar is starting to appear now too in fancier places i love it!
Thank you, nice lesson!!🙏❤
Thank you teacher! Your classes are amazing! You're great! Congrats! :)
Maha I love you lololol! You did the country southern American accent so perfectly @00:59 You sounded like you were directly from Nashville 😄I laughed so hard! 🙌
I’m fasting today and this video is making me hungry. 😋
Thanks! I always love your videos that involve food, because... food!!! 😄
I don't know if I have been exactly "mispronouncing" these because they have been dort of adapted into the German language. We write "Tahini" and I guess that's our word for it. But it's very good to know the origin 😊
Adore your lessons and all the dishes you mentioned in the video. I love zaatar and zeit
Hummus with za'atar and olive oil is the best!
Arabs don’t commonly mix Hummus with Zaatar. That’s an interesting mix that I might try!
It is delicious!!
tayyeb . Shukran Jazeelan. I learned many pronounciations.
Hi Maha thankyou so much , i love your style and i love tabbouleh x
Falafel, hummus, shawarma, manaqeesh, t-heeneh, tabbouleh, burghul(i really loved it).saudia
Haha I really loved this vidéo I ate bulgur tahin today and ate zahtar yesterday for breakfast in Turkey here. I ve never knew they were arab origine except zahtar because on the package it's written in arabic 😂
hi Maha, i was fortunate to have alebanise roomate at the college and he used to make these foods very eloquently and a agree they are so delicious and now every often i get a chance i go to an arabic restaurants and i order them. this video of your was great as usual. thank you Maha
Lovely lesson and teacher 👌💯
Hi definitely like your English and you are an excellent prophesier
Lahmacun is one of my favorite Middle Eastern foods.
My favorite dish, which you can never find in restaurants, is Shish Barak. My Sito used to make it all the time on cold rainy days and I miss it sooooo much....... I wish you would show how to make it, so I could relive my childhood. :-) Thank you and love your content.
6:51 Burghul is in Arabic, however bulgur is in Turkish. And it is super super delicious. Everyone should taste it at least once at his/her life😍❤
Also Bulgur in English, taken from the Turkish
I wondered how we English speakers got the consonants switched. Thanks.
Wow...love it ..
Would love to see you do a video on Arab coffees, specifically Lebanese and Turkish coffees and any other versions that are out there. We have recently been making Lebanese and Turkish coffee at home and love it!
I Love your lessons. You’re so lovely too 🌷
Maha, my favorites are Warak Enab,, Tabouleh, and Kibbeh... ❤️💯 Yum!
Thanks for this video, but in Lebanon they do say "labneh" not "labaneh" and it's not a mispronunciation, it's some dialectal variation. They also say "kebbeh" instead of "kubbeh" and "knefeh" instead of "knafeh".
Am Kenyan in Qatar I make kubeh and waraqanab
Salaam Maha 🧡 greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦!
I would like to make tabbooleh and baklava please!
I'm trying really hard to be consistent with learning Arabic but at the moment I'm demotivated. Please pray for us that God makes it easy to learn Arabic!
شكرا لك!!
Hi I'm from the same country.
In India we call khubs (bread) kooboos. I have no idea why 😂
Great vid. Lebanese dont say Kubbeh, we say Kibbeh. And we say Labneh.
And say belewe not baqlawa.
May God protect you dear Maha .💗
I really do enjoy and learn Arabic with fun and passion. 😇
Much love from Afghanistan 🖤❤💚
I'm Romanian and I absolutely adore hummus 😊
As italian I always pronounced Tabulè 😅.Thanks for explaining them.I do love them. All very yummy.
My absolutely favorite dish is hummus (which I heard pronounced in million ways). Unfortunately, there aren’t many Arabic restaurants around where I live, but my Nr. 1 is a quaint restaurant run by a Moroccan guy.
HI Maha you wanderfull lady Shukran for sharing video happy Ramadan holiday season Salam tak,
shawarma is called DONER in turkish and in Bulgaria
The fried kobbe is called Kobeiba in Egypt
My favorite dishes in the list are hummus and tabbuleh and outside the list baba ganoush and fatush, but also mahalabiya for dessert. In France, tabbuleh is so incredibly popular (albeit in a version with couscous) that you can find it in all supermarkets.
Just wanted to say that you are Amazing!! I truly enjoy listening to and learning from you! Would this dialect be spoken in the Gulf Arab region?
Thank you! MSA is well understood by all arabs, and the Shami Dialect is pretty much clear for the Gulf Arab people as well🤞🏽
Biryani and shawarma I love it shokran watching from the Philipines
Manaqeesh is literally my favorite thing ever 😋
I am eating MANAEESH RIGHT NOW ❤️❤️❤️ 🇱🇧🇵🇸
Shawarma sounds like sarma. In my country(Croatia) sarma is minced meat wrapped with cabbage.
All Americans need this lesson.
LNGG's Channel I speak English very well and I don’t need a lesson in how to pronounce foods that I eat. If I go to an Arabic speaking country that’s different. It’s about being understood.
Love this girl.
1:42 In Azerbaijan we have shawarma beside kebab. We pronounce it as shaurma. It is really super yummy and my favorite😍
In Russia we also pronounce it as shaurma, I think we borrowed it from you or from Tatars.
Shawarma is an Arab food but now adapted worldwide
Shawerma in Egyptian, Falafel is Ta'meyya in Egyptian made of Fool (fava beans)
There is a syrian falafel-shop in Hamburg where they make lebanese makanek-sandwich with arabic bread and thin sausages. That's delicious.
Wo Hamburg
love it
So interesting and funny way to learn arabic with Maha😍
Shukran😍
I lovvvvveeee خلية النحل khaleeyatul na7l mmmm
Thyme in English English pronounced same as ‘time’, and Summac is a dried crushed berry so technically a fruit.
Awesome
Maha your super!!
All Salam Alaikum Happy Ramada holidays Shukran for sharing video 📹 Salam tak Enjoy every moment of life,
In English we pronounce Thyme as Time
I'm personally already used to pronounce all these traditional Arab recipes and quit used to eat them too, even though I'm not used to eat them all, because I'm European and here there's lack of everything... I basically eat 2 or 3 recipes. Nothing else 🤷🏼♀️ 😓 😞
My favourite Arab food recipes are Falastini 🇵🇸, Saudi 🇸🇦 w Yemeni 🇾🇪
Kisses and hugs, Ya Maha! 🤗 😙 💛
Salam min Bortuqal 🇵🇹 👋🏻
Am going to get knafah right now, and I blame you for the extra calories 😂
🤓🤓🤓
I still dream of the mana’eesh I had every morning before your class in Akko!
😋😋😋
It's my all time favourite too. So yummlicious.
Maha, when are you going to repost your wax video? I really want to learn it.
Manaqeesh with onion is sooooo good
کنوفه لذیذ جدا ! 😍😋😋😋😋
I adore arab food!!💙sooo difficult to find the right place in Milan with the real hummus😭
Not really next time I will tell you where to go
For those wishing to say labneh in Lebanese, please follow how Maha says NOT to say it and mispronounced :P she says it perfectly well, but no matter how you pronounce it, it's just as good to eat :D, w great vid ya Maha
Now I found something to tease my life long Palestinian friend with, 25 years and counting, labAneh, and when asked I'll share the link to the video, ana ma khassneh, Maha heik alit :D:D
as for foods I love: mloukhiyyeh, or mouloukhiyya as mispronounced in different parts of the Levant :P
Nice
Maha this is great to know. I'm East African and I love North African food. Falafel and Shawarma is great. Here in America Middle Eastern food is expensive
@Hamza I know I'm East African and I like Sudanese food and Moroccan food which is North African. I have had Arab food like Lebanese/Syrian but I prefer North African cuisine. Everyone is different with what they like.
I like your video a lot...I am your sympathy brother
Ive realised this is a pronunciation video centered around the Palestinian way to say the words, in Australia where im from we would call the raw meat “kibbeh nayeh” which I’d assume is focused around the Lebanese interpretation of the dish, as our country is full of brothers and sisters from Lebanon 🇱🇧 . much respect and many thanks to you though! Very informative video ❤️
I’ve been in Saudi Arabia for 30 years. I used to have falafel sandwich or za’atar croissant almost daily in breakfast. Now I badly miss both of them as it’s not available in Pakistan. In Jeddah, Makkah and Medina falafel is called “ ta’amia” طعمية.
In Egypt we use both طعمية و فلافل
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here in Brazil we have a very big Arab community and we pronounce most of those names correctly. Maybe our language, Portuguese, helps a bit. Anyway, thanks for the video. Loving the channel. By the way, the kubbeh here in Brazil is called kibe (pronounced keebê) and the manaqeesh is called esfiha. Not sure why so different. 😁
Here in Brazil we say kibbeh instead of kubbeh because it's the Lebanese accent. Most immigrants to Brazil were from Lebanon and Syria. Sfiha and manaqish are different but similar dishes, sfiha is smaller.
Many foods that are known as Turkish food originally are Kurdish food. Kebab is also a Kurdish Food. Like baklava, lahmacun etc.
Maha could you please do vegetables, spices & food items you would buy at store
In my country we do have shawarma but it is sometimes pronounced as Shwama
احب الكبة و حمص و كنافة و بقلاوة من تركيا لذيذة حقاً احب الاكثر من موز التي كرة عليها جداً
The pronunciation in Brazil is mostly influenced by Lebanese. Some dishes and ingredients are translated into Portuguese. Since the beginning of Lebanese immigration in the 19th century, many of the dishes have become so popular that are considered Brazilian by now. One name that hás puzzled me for a time is "esfiha" (don't know the Arabic word). Is it the same as manqeesh? In Brazil, the edges of the dough are a little raised, forming a well of sorts for the filling. Also, if you say kibe, you mean the fried ones by default. For the raw one, you have tô say "kibe cru".
Can you please make the Muhammara dip or hummus with muhammara :D
Nice Friend
Why do I (native Arabic speaker) watch this video and actually practice with you. I love this vid btw.
In the USA, shawarma gets mispronounced life this: the wrap is called "gyro: (greek word), and shawarma (said "shwarma") if it's on a plate with no bread.
Maha really i love you so much...😍😍😍😍
You didn t mention 2 dishes i m crazy about: mutabbal and mafrukay ... or however you pronounce them.
مشاهدة داكي من ساو باولو ، البرازيل ، ممتاز
mushahadatan daki min saw bawlu , albarazil , mumtaz
Maha Warak Einab and Dawwali can you explain the dufference?
Nice video
Mahaaa.. do make a video on pronouncing types of nuts and dried fruits... they r very common at souq and many of them just point fingers having hard time to tell em wat they want.
Manaeesh mon préféré
Your videos is very useful ma'am.thank u for sharing....may i ask if your dialect and food is the same in Oman?
I love Falafel,Hummus,Kunafa most
Za'atar!!
In Russia شاورما is very known under the same name шаурма
I bought a quantity of summac in Greece, for here in Italy I can't find it, and I really love it ❣
If you can find an Arabic store they'll definitely have sumac
Various species of this grow wild in the U.S., and are native here. Most people don't know the edible floral/seed parts are edible. Some people use this to make a refreshing tea, with floral and lemony notes.
Lahmbajeen! People always correct me lol. What am I doing wrong!? Lol
I think the recipe I use for za'tar is from one of your videos
Regarding ħummuṣ, the pronunciation of /χumus/ as opposed to /ħʊmːʊsˤ/ is a little more valid, since it's based on the Hebrew word חוּמוּס as opposed to the Arabic word حمص. Similarly, the difference between the end vowel in ṭəḥina/ṭəḥine, since it has a long 'a' in the Hebrew טְחִינָה.
in Lebanon we call manaqeesh "manousheh" - again no idea why 😂 Loved this video! x
Man'ousheh is the singular word. Mana'eesh is plural :)
rakko this makes sense thank you!
Boa tarde a todos!!!
Boa tarde mano
My grandma knows very well how to cook كبة too. And my mom does’nt but over time she got used to it little bit😂 this is one of my favorite dishes, and luckily while watching this video now they make this food 😂
انا من ماردين من تركيا و احب دروسك🌷
Your lessons on Arabic verb patterns are very helpful . But three of them are available on utube . What about others ?
Thank you! Coming soon!!
