I think a lot of people can relate to this. Child actors and gifted children definitely have very similar paths. Both have a "come to Jesus" moment where they realize that the pedestal that they have been put on is not infinite. As a "gifted" kid it hit me like a ton of bricks going into college. You very quickly realize how much bigger the pool that you're swimming in is and that there are a lot of other fish that swim a lot better than you do.

This may sound defeatist but I think there is some beauty in living in your nightmare. To realize that life goes on and you're still here even when things go wrong, shows how strong you are.
Life is full of ups and downs. You can experience incredible pain and incredible happiness. You get what you want sometimes and other times you don’t. It sucks but we just have to keep going.
I really enjoyed this discussion. As an artist myself, I'm definitely eager to break into the industry but sufficiently humbled discern the realities of this industry as a whole. Thank you, Devon and Jennifer for sharing your stories. It's certainly reassured me to keep faith in my dreams and goals - as I'm sure it's done for many!
It’s so hard being an artist without an audience, and how invalidating it can feel to NEED to make it a job, but good work is good work! People will care if you keep dreaming I swear :)
Hearing you guys talk about this personal stuff about growing up and still dreaming and still going after your goals and wants has helped me today so thank you.. love your shows enjoy you guys so thank you!
This is a reminder that the humans I grew up with are just that: humans. Thank you for this project. It’s affected me positively in ways I literally couldn’t have guessed.
I have similar conversations with family and friends about music. I've played big festivals. I tour majority of the year and people still ask about getting a "normal" or "real" job. It always seems to be people who are sad about working a dead-end 9-5 too. Keep chasing what you love and work hard everyone. The grass isn't always greener

Sometimes we have to do what we don't want to do in order to get where we wanna be. I can relate to family doubting me when I quit my call center job to do RUclips full-time. I never asked for handouts or anything. After 3 years in a cubicle, I bounced as soon as my ad revenue was able to at least pay rent and bills.
I'm coming up on doing my own thing for six years now and I couldn't be happier. Nothing crushes a young person's mindset like someone going, "So, when are you gonna get a REAL job?"

I guess it's meant to humble you, what are you looking for? Power? Validation? Money? Love? What does success mean to you?
I know it's not my path, it's not my future, but I have been chasing the high I felt on stage as a teenager/young adult for over a decade and nothing comes close to it. Life had other plans for me but there has never been anything that touched my soul the way performing did. Planning on trying my hand at D&D at the suggestion of a few friends to see if that scratches the itch.

If you still love acting but can't find professional work, maybe you could do it as a hobby with a community theater group or something? Anyway, thank you for sharing so openly about your experiences! 💕
People who get a taste of being a celebrity seem to think they are so unique. Non celebrities feel the same way but we suck it up and daydream to relief the disappointment.
I wanted to be an author and gave up when I realized how hard the industry is to break through. Decided to try freelance writing instead to scratch the itch so now I write marketing content haha, not exactly what I dreamed of as a kid. But it's easier to quash the unrealistic desires than to live with the ravenous lion, at least for me. I think all creative people can relate to this conversation, it was a great one.
Have you guys thought about reinventing yourself? I feel like a lot of child/teen stars like yourself make it big again after they have done that.

When I consider some of the celebrities I can think of who became famous at a young age and then the success continued for them in adulthood, I think a lot of them come across in interviews as just sort of disconnected from what life is like for normal people, since they haven't had normal lives since they were literally children. They do things that are just sort of weird from the perspective of normal people (getting multiple cosmetic surgery procedures, stuff like that), and they aren't self-aware that this is sort of weird because this stuff is so normalized in the entertainment industry. By contrast, y'all seem so refreshingly normal and down-to-earth, and I think it's because you've had the opportunity to lead normal adult lives.

Why doesn't Netflix just make a show similar to the movie This Is The End "maybe not end of the world" where all of the classic shows from the 2000's actors just play a more extreme version of themselves interacting with other celbs doing the same like picture this for the pilot the cast of neds and like zoey 101 throw a major party that no one attends because the cast of wizards and suit life throw a party on the same night and then they can inset the classic "fuck those Disney kids" meme energy....think cobra kia type vibes

She sounds bitter bc at the time she thought doing wizards of waverly place was gonna make her huge afterwards and give her all these opportunities but she didn’t get them and it didn’t go as planned. I can understand the hurt but I don’t feel bad there are millions of talented people who don’t get that opportunity. She’s lucky to have had the opportunities she’s had so far. I do think she has a place of hurt because of Selena’s career and how she continued to get bigger after the show went on. Again I can understand the hurt but I think she’s holding onto something that she should’ve let go of a long time ago
She is not bitter, she even stated here and other podcasts and interviews that she loved where her life went. She stated that if she got what she wanted then she might not be who she is now and something she didn't want to be.
I can’t stand people like you, who are always trying to find something negative in everything. Jen is being vulnerable in this podcast, speaking her truth, and all you got from this is ‘she’s bitter’…! Like go to therapy and go get help!
