Great video and information. It's easy to underestimate the extreme value of this info. Years ago, when I wasn't thinking correctly, not thinking melodically and enough about the Blues and constantly creating a real good feel, I wouldn't have thought much of this. I'm not even done with the video, and I just sat down for 5 mins and played the 1st 4 bars, then slowly and gradually expanded on it having a blast doing so. Thanks again.
Quincy thank you for these cool rhythms. I added the bass on the one to help me keep track and add a little bottom end to the first 12 bar example. Love the snare pattern in the first bar. When I am just riffing on my own I tend to get into the same comping pattern, so this is a great addition. You are the best jazz drum teacher on RUclips. Thanks again.

Yeah all Mr. Riley needed was a ride, snare, hats and bass drum and he could swing you into bad health. Glad you love him as much as I do Mike. Cheers!
Hi Quincy, I can't wait to see the SNL skit that calls for "more HiHat." Seriously, this is something that is important to get across. I practice a similar approach when trying to do very challenging 4 bar measures from John Riley's "Beyond Bop" book. One lesson I learned from an instructor, which you touched on was to start slow, very slow, 60 bpm. It requires incredible focus on the ride and its swinging feel, putting the other limbs in unison with each other or in the correct place, since the muscle memory does not seem to come into play. The end result is my timing at all tempos is much more locked in. My favorite listen is Elvin Jones playing slow ballads with sticks, which I find incredibly challenging to do as musically well as Elvin. Thank you for your great lessons and teaching.

Great concept for really training each limb and really focusing on the feel of the layback and groove. The Etudes are really helpful as well.Thanks Q. I will go through John Riley's 1st book again using this since I still find it challenging.

One idea that might be fun is to take a recording of one of the masters trading 4’s (Philly Joe) and each person transcribes one of the 4’s, sort of going in a circle round robin, and all learn from each other and build even more language 🙂🙌🥁
