The back and forth between these two is just brilliant. Two cold, calculating professional killers (and bullshitters) just needling each other, like it's a game.
The thing I love about this is that Teddy makes a mistake immediately and Robert picks up on it. Any detective would immediately show their credentials. Teddy didn't. And Robert instantly went into "feel this guy out" mode. Admitted to what he knew Teddy wanted him to deny to see how he would handle it. And then when he's walking away, calls him back to let him know he knows he's not a real detective.
You do not understand that at this level, Nocolai was already persuading in his mind that Robert was the man he was looking for. He just wanted confirmation by going into the field. And seeing from the front who he was dealing with. That is why he was so careless in these statements. And it is because Robert knew that Nicolai had already discovered it that he wanted to let him know by provoking him with police ID. This verbal confrontation was just a "You know who I am and I know who you are"
To emphasize what ndong already said: these two already knew they weren’t who they were pretending to be. Nikolai’s whole “police investigator” act was purposefully transparent. It’s a power move. He already assumed he wouldn’t be able to trick McCall, so he’s putting his own face on McCall’s doorstep to say “two can play this game.” In short, he went there to size up his opponent in person, and found that he was very evenly matched.
1:26 Denzel’s eyes automatically tracks onto Teddy’s hand before he even pulls out the photo from his jacket pocket. Loved that quick little detail to emphasize how alert he
@@joshuasantana685 yeah but 5 in walking distance? I'd say walking distance is like 20 minutes cause I don't really think if someone wanted to get something to eat they'd walk more than 20 minutes just to get there.
McCall actually straight up tells Nicolai that he's not someone you'd wanna mess with. That one step into the hallway and that "we who?" question were just a way to send a message. And Nicolai absolutely got that message. All portrayed via subtext. Exceptional acting by both Denzel and Marton.
0:45 the way Denzel confessed that he happened to be there that day completely throws the Russian off gaurd and the ball into his court. Later when Denzel says that if he weren't then the Russian would not have come to his house to question him again puts the Russian on the backfoot. Later the Russian throws Denzel off gaurd when he shows Denzel the pic of the dead girl. Both are amazing at what they do.
My personal favorite line is when senator Plummer says to her husband "He didn't come for help. He came for permission." Totally sums up everything you need to know about Robert.
It is captivating that he is both “Intimidating and controlled “ at the same time when he says “we who?”. His face doesn’t show anger as such but his body comes forward as if he is not afraid to question him. He is calm, composed but deadly.
That’s an old school feature used in movies. Pay attention and you’ll find that most movie light up the protagonist and keep the antagonists in the shadow.
This scene is amazing. Two people cut from the same cloth in terms of being cold blooded, calculated and psychopathic. But are fighting from opposing sides. Much like when the Lion of the Land meets the Wolf of the Hill. Also love how they both size up each other. The visitor is anxious, not in the sense of being intimidated but that he’s come across someone who he can’t really toy with this time. He knows that this man (Denzel) is more than who he says he is.
In a sense no. Teddy was right in saying what he said, but the reason he was driving at is that McCall isn't a nobody, a simple civilian; there's alot more to this man underneath the surface. Hence why when they're digging into McCall's background he sees it all as the "fiction" that it is. He knew McCall was dangerous, and at this point he knew he was responsible for what happened at the restaurant.
It's Marton Csokas. More specific: Márton Csókás. Pronounced: Cho-Kash. He is part Hungarian. Csoka is a bird. A "Western jackdaw" type of bird. But Hungarians call it Csoka. So Csokas roughly translates: he who likes Western jackdaw. Or another translate example: when you covered in sand, then you are sandy. When you covered in Csoka, you are Csokas. :)
THE best scene in the movie. There is sooooooooo much going on here. Magnificent, yet subtle. NOTHING escapes either character's gaze including Teddy's knarled knuckle. The highlight of the scene for me is when McCall asks, "How did you find me?" As Teddy turns and heads back up the stairs, McCall steps right TO him intercepting him at the head of the stairs and takes a very tactical position. Prepared for whatever may happen while simultaneously fliping everything around by questioning Teddy.
I like how he plays games with the bad guys, he asks questions he already knows the answer to and makes references to things he already knows. Maybe not as much in this specific scene but it’s definitely his thing in these Equalizer movies and I love it. Lmao👍🏾
doing a russian accent is hard enough, so imagine doing a russian impersonating a boston cop. i think csokas (new zealand native) did it perfectly. 1:04 - “walking distance” 1:25 - “cooperation”
Usually happen in every movies when they get sequel. In sequel or the second movie release, it's hard to make a movie without predictable because the standard they make in first movie is really high and audience knows it because they have watched the first movie
CinemaWins said it: I love how Bob is completely open about everything. Yes, he was at the restaurant that evening. Teddy would not be here if he was not, since he is "investigating a homicide". Bob was there for a meeting with the girl who did not show up, whose name he immediately told Teddy. Nothing to hide there. He even admitted to knowing the dead girl. Not nervous or afraid about how they found him, just straight up telling him everything blatantly obvious (except about him going on a rampage there), then calling him out on not even leaving a card when leaving. Then, wenn Teddy tries to intimidate him he steps closer to Teddy, asking him who "we" is, smiling like he sees right through him (which, of course, he did).
When Nikolai showed him the picture of the dead woman, it's clear that she didn't "fall and broke her neck". Why would she be sitting on a chair, then? Robert McCall knew that but didn't want to give away anything yet. That's just my personal opinion and interpretation, though. I could be wrong.
Power play between prime alphas. Brilliant scene. Each of them questioning, answering before another completing the question, answering exactly what the other person wants to know, telling truth and lies for the right questions. Eventually Teddy understood that he is facing a different breed and left the place to learn more about Mc Call.

He already assumed he wouldn’t be able to trick McCall, so he’s putting his own face on McCall’s doorstep to say “two can play this game.”
In short, he went there to size up his opponent in person, and found that he was very evenly matched.
1:26 Denzel’s eyes automatically tracks onto Teddy’s hand before he even pulls out the photo from his jacket pocket. Loved that quick little detail to emphasize how alert he
Huh?? Of course u would follow someone's "Hands" who's in front of u. U don't Do That?? Do U stare at their FEET?? smh
Yes! And at 0:36, you can see Denzel quickly gaze down the stairs to make sure Teddy is alone. Situational awareness.
"There´s five authentic russian restaurants within walking distance of your apartment"
I didn´t realize the movie takes place in Moscow.
Kakoyta doorast blyat😂
It’s not.
There are towns where Russians immigrated to that open a bunch of businesses.
Lil Moscow. Lil Odessa
It might be in Brooklyn
@@joshuasantana685 yeah but 5 in walking distance? I'd say walking distance is like 20 minutes cause I don't really think if someone wanted to get something to eat they'd walk more than 20 minutes just to get there.
Always Be afraid of the calmest and the kindest.
Subtlety is overrated
The moment McCall stepped out into Nikolai's face...BOSS MOVE.
Teddy is probably one of my favorite bad guys of all times.
Agreed
i wish he could make just a little trouble for mac
Baris Bal exactly Russian spetznaz and got killed so easily
Right next to the cop in training day...the name escapes me at the moment...
Marton Csokas is an underrated actor. Held his own with Denzel in every scene
Who underrated him? Should have his lungs torn out!
Agreed. The most formidable bad guy in all three of the movies.
@@cheaplaffsarefree Definitely the greatest villain out of all three films
0:45 the way Denzel confessed that he happened to be there that day completely throws the Russian off gaurd and the ball into his court. Later when Denzel says that if he weren't then the Russian would not have come to his house to question him again puts the Russian on the backfoot. Later the Russian throws Denzel off gaurd when he shows Denzel the pic of the dead girl.
Both are amazing at what they do.
Denzel still won the psychological duel
High functioning psychopaths
My personal favorite line is when senator Plummer says to her husband "He didn't come for help. He came for permission." Totally sums up everything you need to know about Robert.
I didn't check my watch.
LOL
Steve McCollum Haha, I know. Cause checking his watch is all he does. That like was totally for the audience.
Ohh I see
yeah that was funny
I love how he's so structured his dress, apartment, everything is so precise.
It is captivating that he is both
“Intimidating and controlled “ at the same time when he says “we who?”. His face doesn’t show anger as such but his body comes forward as if he is not afraid to question him. He is calm, composed but deadly.
I like how Nicolie doesn’t really come into the light and McCall is in the light., a sense of symbolism; good and evil.
Ben Geiger I noticed that too!! The shadowy face creates a sinister look on nickoli
Ben Geiger
He could only get so close to the light :)
That’s an old school feature used in movies. Pay attention and you’ll find that most movie light up the protagonist and keep the antagonists in the shadow.
McCall: i didn't check my watch.."
Also McCall: "16 seconds.." LOL
I love how they both just lay it on the table.
2166397 G EXACTLY
They acknowledged each others abilities right from the get go
This is when Nickolai realizes he’s dealing with something different he wasn’t sure yet but he senses a “fellow traveler”
But which one is the Wolf and the Lion?
The wolf in sheep skin
"everything about him is wrong" this why he lost, his perception of his prey was off and he was eaten
"Must have given them all out" 😂
we who??
we who??
savage moment ever his face expression, priceless
Marton Czokas makes a great villain
RVREVO X3 : The 007 producers should stop right here!.
He is really good.
RVREVO X3 these elves never trust them
See Lord Celeborn
It's Marton Csokas. More specific: Márton Csókás. Pronounced: Cho-Kash. He is part Hungarian. Csoka is a bird. A "Western jackdaw" type of bird. But Hungarians call it Csoka. So Csokas roughly translates: he who likes Western jackdaw.
Or another translate example: when you covered in sand, then you are sandy. When you covered in Csoka, you are Csokas. :)
Oh yes... see his role in 'Into The Badlands', his best villain yet... his character Baron Quinn is savage, bone chilling.
This film was great way too underrated
yeah, that's for sure!
'I was meeting a friend it was her idea'
'Then I guess I should talk...'
'SHEILA... SHEILA SAUNDERS'
LMAO quick response Denzel
Brilliant actors. Skilled and Serious
0:37 that little glance down at the staircase, taking in his surroundings and seeing if Nikolai is alone is just peak Robert.
The shade concealing Nikolai's eyes, it gives him a creepy look. Even the lighting technicians in this movie showcasing their excellence.
I like how he plays games with the bad guys, he asks questions he already knows the answer to and makes references to things he already knows. Maybe not as much in this specific scene but it’s definitely his thing in these Equalizer movies and I love it. Lmao👍🏾
Better fight scene than most fight scenes and there isn't even a fight.
Exactly!
I would rather say those two were sparring with each other. Nonetheless…one of my favorite scenes of the movie 🤩
There is a fight. A fight of wits and wills.
1:26 His reaction thought he was reaching lmao 🔫
doing a russian accent is hard enough, so imagine doing a russian impersonating a boston cop. i think csokas (new zealand native) did it perfectly.
1:04 - “walking distance”
1:25 - “cooperation”
Marton Czokas is not a New Zealand native. He is a citizen of New Zealand but he originally comes from Hungary.
Equalizer One is still the best.. 2 is not as good compare to this.
Rajat Chugh agreed the equaliser 2 was very predictable.
I thought 2 was better but, whatever it just an opinion
Usually happen in every movies when they get sequel. In sequel or the second movie release, it's hard to make a movie without predictable because the standard they make in first movie is really high and audience knows it because they have watched the first movie
2nd part had too many subplots, 1st part was focused one 1 plot that's why better
This is almost always the way it is with sequels...
CinemaWins said it:
I love how Bob is completely open about everything.
Denzel is a national treasure. Great actor, great man.
When Nikolai showed him the picture of the dead woman, it's clear that she didn't "fall and broke her neck". Why would she be sitting on a chair, then? Robert McCall knew that but didn't want to give away anything yet. That's just my personal opinion and interpretation, though. I could be wrong.
Everything about EQ 1 IS AMAZING.
Power play between prime alphas. Brilliant scene. Each of them questioning, answering before another completing the question, answering exactly what the other person wants to know, telling truth and lies for the right questions.
Eventually Teddy understood that he is facing a different breed and left the place to learn more about Mc Call.
The lighting in this film is brilliant.
“Everything about him is wrong.” Such a great line!
1:58 love how Mccall immediately stepped forward and into his face ( it’s like saying I’m not gonna be intimidated here, you are!) and it got reinforced when that dude said “everything about him is wrong!” Love Great actors, when they grip you and pull you into a scene and hold your attention! Stellar performance Denzel and Nikolai! Bravo!
That guy looks like Kevin Spacey!
-We who?
- ...😏
- We who?
- ...😏
The way he smiles when he says “she fell down and broke her neck” gives me chills
When the Devil meets their match 😑
Right
All the respect to Denzel Washington, but Marton Csokas is delightful in this.
so, Equilizer lives in shaky house so he can tell that someone is walking on stairs just by looking at swinging keys.
@Do it Dex "not a t-rex this time, thank god"
I think McCall is the only tenant who lives on that particular floor so of course he would know if somebody is coming up the steps.
Idk if he picked that because it was shaky. But hes definitely taking advantage of it
I thought that perhaps he had been in the flat and realised it was occupied so quietly left. That's why nick made it look like he was only just getting to the top of the stairs
@Stugots666x nick entered the flat and quickly left but disturbed the keys. Then made it look like he had just walked to the top of the stairs
The way how Denzel character is tentative, calculating, and unafraid.
Yes the exact opposite of an American.
@@Chris66able 😂😂😂
@@Chris66able Here now, you're talkin' about the land of the free and the home of ... I .. I'm sorry, I can't go on; you're so correct and right, both.
Exactly. He's an absolute unit
When super badass came to very super badass
This clip could be renamed, "We Who"
Denzel is great as usual but give props to the villan too...he is excellent in his roll and so menacing...he has a face that is pure evil.
2:14 He even had his self defense book with him. Teddy would have been toast if he didn't back off after Bob took a step towards him.
I love how Denzel smiles after the “We who”, while Nikolai is walking away… he wasn’t intimidated even for a second…
Yeah i think he just recognized the type - the likes he dealt with during his professional times. Nikolai on the other hand - while a big fish, mostly dealt with gangsters below his station, not someone like Robert. Robert was not phased and Nikolai met something he is not used to.
this villian guy was as good as denzel.how good he chamges the accent as for the rest of the movie he uses a russian accent
yeah, when I first saw the movie, I thought, "How clever of him to change his accent to interview Denzel!"
You wouldn't be here if I wasn't.
Always a powerful presence in his acting. Everyone knows it's time to shut up and listen when Denzel speaks. He would make a great school teacher, nothing but authority.
Can't believe this guy played an elf! He did a great job in this movie!
Whenever Denzel hits the timer on his watch... It's about to go down.
Not seeing anyone mention that Teddy put on a Boston accent! Dude pulled a classic Hans Gruber!!! C’mon man!! 👏👏👏
"Aren't you gonna leave me your card? "You know in case I remember anything?" I mean that's what you policeman do right?" Robert knew damn well right away that Nikolai wasn't a cop.
Love the way Robert closes the distance immediately to show no fear, that he’s in control of the situation
The craziest thing is that McCall lives somewhere where there are no fewer than FIVE Russian restaurants (authentic, no less) within walking distance of his home.
Good lord this scene is killer. Even the lighting is spot on perfect.
Can we take a moment to appreciate all the skills that contributed to this scene, script, screenplay, direction? I like Denzel too, and he always plays this kind of character really well, so I'm going to give both actors some of the credit for bringing this scene to life in spectacular fashion. Bravo!
one year later, yes
What i love about this scene is how Nikolai initially thought he got the jump on McCall, but apparently failed when McCall calmly answered all questions. And McCall turned the table around instantly when asking him how he'd find him while stepping out, which then Nikolai quickly dismissed himself cos he got surprised.
A subtle yet epic win
This scene never gets old. It's so genuine about the seriousness of the situation
The british when they sense someone is there to interrupt their teatime..
My God, I could watch Denzel work his craft as Mr. McCall all day. Great acting all around.
This is one of my favorite movies. So well done.
Denzel always on point . . Had his story straight BEFORE he even opened the door . . . SMART AF . . . . . Same in Real Life too 🙂
McCall: " oh yeah I heard on tv about that. I happened to be there that night."
Teddy : "Ah you were?"
McCall: "you wouldn't be here if I wasn't. "
Teddy:" That's right. "
Intelligently written script. Awesomely delivered .
The tension captured in this scene was bone chilling.
