im new to sewing and one thing i learned from someone AFTER i cut my velvet was you have to be careful on which way you cut velvet since the material itself flows a certain direction. if you cut it in different directions then your finished product will look weird since the light hits it differently and the flow of the velet are two separate directions.

Yes the velvet fabric works. As I said in a reply post below I make them for my grandson using the velvet stretch fabric. I can't make them fast enough. Thanks for the tutorial.

I think if you didn't have a durag to make a pattern from, you could measure from your forehead to the crown of your head for like the top (horizontal) line of the pattern plus two inches and a bit (for the ties and 'cause you need a bit extra so it's not tight and for seam allowance), and then for the back (the vertical line on the pattern) of of it you would measure from your crown to where your head meets your neck, plus however many inches extra to make it the length you want. Draw those two lines, and then draw a curve to trim off the point of the corner because your head isn't a right angle. :p after that drawing on the ties and the inner line of the part that covers your head is pretty straightforward. I hope that helps!

Best thing I could recommend that would better this for you would be to do the hem on the outside, so that every part of the first can be flat and completely compressed. Great grind bro keep shooting out great work for the wave community.

My partner is Native American with long hair,I dissected a Durag of his,then my sewing machine crashed..just got a machine,.....meanwhile,he lost the pieces,pinned to the patterns I had cut.Not going to take one apart,,looked at downloadable patterns,...all along.,been thinking,there has got to be an alternative way .It is less complicated,makes more sense,...thanks,glad I found you.I was not sure how Durag was spelled ,found posts on Doo rag,,one with this spelling,searched,and found you.

If you don't have a sewing machine you do have some other options. You can hand sew with needle and thread. 2. Fabric glue. 3. Stitch witchery. Hope it helps.
You can also use patternmaking paper to make your patterns. It’s thicker than regular paper and can handle pins so you can pin it on your fabric. You can get it on Amazon by the yard.

If you fold the fabric so it’s doubled, you only have to do one cut, cause two pieces will come from that one cut. ☺️
