This video saved me $11,000 replacing all the windows in my house. They were drafty as can be and at 30 years old, I thought they just needed to be updated. I bought $20 in caulk and sealed all of them up, my house is so much warmer at night. You da man!
I like how it's a "real-life" environment---not a pre-fabricated perfect/ideal/brand new window situation. He shows how to realistically fill in gaps left while applying the caulk, how to add caulk to a caulk line and, how to smooth the caulk in both directions. That's what you actually come across when you caulk.
Thank you for making this video! I am a young, new homeowner with no background in DIY and need to seal up a windowsill where ants were coming in. Much less stressful watching your overview of the basic process, thanks :)
Great video. I appreciated seeing multiple shots of you applying the caulk / running your finger over it. Good to have a good mental picture of what I'm trying to do before I do it.
Tip from a legendary queen: Once you've chalked, put dish soap on your finger then smoothen it out and it won't stick to your finger and it'll be very smooth 💅

Came across this video today, thank you so much! Clear instructions and tips, I’ve never caulked before and this video gave me the confidence to do around my bathroom window as I’m redecorating!
Thank you! I need to do this to my window between the window sill and the screen; A couple recluse spiders have been getting in through the crack! Needed this!
Thanks for the video! I've recently moved into a condo with horrible drafts coming in now that it's gotten colder and windier. Even my house built in the 60s didn't have as much air coming in. I'm also having issues with smoke smell coming in through the cracks around the windows from a woman who smokes in the parking lot.. I work from home and have been getting a migraine from it every day this last week and it stinks in here. I hope that helps a tiny bit at least. This was super helpful. Will definitely be heading to home depot this week!
Thank you so much excellent video I have always used t-shirt material old t-shirt material and dampened it or wet it and pull over the caulking line,..just a thought
So I liked ur video but I didn't get the metal case I didn't see those..I have never used the case.. do I go back to home depot and get the metal case..thanks.. only one window has an issue..
Thanks from the UK. Nice easy video to watch. I knew how to caulk or I thought I did. Learnt bad habits from ex husband who knew it all lol Off to caulk now
TY for this! Gonna have to redo the caulking on my bedroom window in our shitty 10yo condo, which gets a ton of temp changes through the day and from season to season. Builders did a hell of a bad job but now I can fix it. =P
Id like to give few pointers. First of all get rid of this gun, when you need to caulk few lines it willdo the job when you have todo lots of caulking it is a piece of crap, at least oil it a bit.. Second, try to feed fast eaven beed, beed must be under the nozzle all time, if any starts toget out from sides, clean nozzle right away. Third, start with corners moveing out from the corner, never end in the corner.
But how do you do this on the outside of a 3rd flow condo window that is like 40 feet high? lol. I'm having a fly problem that keep slipping through the window, but there is no way that I can think of to do this on the outside of the window without falling to my death.
Not bad but I don't cut my tip at such an extreme angle. A slight angle allows you to just keep the gun straight and you get a more consistent bead. Also you forgot to spit on it. Spitting on your finger keeps the caulk from sticking to your finger and it smoothes out the rough edges.
You should calk wherever the gaps in the pains are. I know your comment was is a month old so you probably figured it out. If there is gap where the panes are letting the outside elements in you should seal it then paint it if you decide to.
"Caulking is pretty easy to do". You've obviously never seen me caulk. I get it everywhere and it looks like a comedy skit. After watching your video, I'm thinking part of my problem is I bought the cheapest caulk gun in HD and it will not lay a bead like as smooth as yours. I have to keep cranking mine and more caulk comes out the backside of the tube than the tip. lol Edit: Came back to say I caulked my windows after watching your video and did the best caulk job I've ever done. The difference was I bought a better quality gun and I was very conscious of how much pressure I used with my finger to spread it out. Prior to watching your video, I used to press hard. Thanks!!!
I used to also the problem stop cutting the tube tip so large’ tiny tiny holes and caulk goes where u want you don’t need a massive glob everywhere Small tip = caulk not all over
Thank you so very much. I am trying to fix my apartment (slum.landlord) and was afraid of caulking the window because of this video the fear is gone. Thank you

I think what you mean is this was demonstrated with a 'real-life' setting v/s within a a 'controlled laboratory' setting.
Nope wrong not supposed to use caulk / silicone should be used
@fordsidney70 People call both kinds caulk funny goy.

New homeowner, single woman, and new to diy- THANK YOU for this video!

Thanks a lot John!
Straight and to the point with nice advice. Great video.
A video from a true Dad. Perfect
Thanks for the help! Running your finger over it "gently" felt like a pro tip. My windows look professionally sealed now!
Awesome, glad it helped! I appreciate you watching🙏
Thanks for a great video. You kept it nice and simple, straight to the point! I'm ready to caulk my windows now. Great music in the background too!
🙏🙏

Idk why this is so satisfying to watch
Haha
Love this video. Quick, to the point and super informative. I’m doing my windows tomorrow so I’ll let you know the outcome.
Watching this in 2024 thank you !!
Thanks for the help! replaced my windows after watching, great content 👍👍
Excellent video, nice and simple and shows the full process!
Hello, thanks for this. If you are resealing do you need to remove the old silicone? Thanks so much
Thanks for the video, very easy and simple advice to follow 👍🏻
Best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧
Thank you!

Awesome, I’m sure new caulking will help out for sure!
Very helpful video. Helped boost my confidence that I could do this project. Thank you!!!👍🏽
What else can you use besides your finger? I have to do my whole house and I worry about toxins. Thanks
Hey thanks man. Just what I need to do for this cold winter.
great video brother!!! needed this.
I’ve definitely been pushing too hard with my finger. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much excellent video I have always used t-shirt material old t-shirt material and dampened it or wet it and pull over the caulking line,..just a thought
Do you need to scrape the old silicon or you just apply over it?
Thanks for this video. Is it silicone caulk?
I need to redo the caulking on my windows. Should I scrape off the old stuff before putting the new stuff on?
ALWAYS! Never put new caulk over old
So I liked ur video but I didn't get the metal case I didn't see those..I have never used the case.. do I go back to home depot and get the metal case..thanks.. only one window has an issue..
Thanks! I'm going to do MY windows with Caulk because I can't afford getting new windows put in!!😊
Yay I did it myself! I've been waiting for someone else to do it for 2 weeks so I can put my blinds back up
Thanks for sharing your method and insights/tips! 🙂👍
I learned a pack of baby wipes in my tool-bag is incredibly useful, I don’t always have running water or a bucket and sponge available
Thanks from the UK. Nice easy video to watch. I knew how to caulk or I thought I did. Learnt bad habits from ex husband who knew it all lol Off to caulk now
Cut caulk tip square and apply at a 90 it comes out perfect and you dont even have to touch it.
Great video… what about where the glass meets the edge of the frame? Does that require caulking and if so would I use a clear caulk? Thank you!
I wouldn't recommend it since the glass needs room to breathe as air pressure changes with the seasons
Yeah amazing how much cold little cracks can let in like cracked plaster around window frames and draughts from electrical fittings and pipes.
Will this help keep flies out ?
Straight to the point. Thank you

I always find it difficult to remove the excess lines once you have smoothed it out, any ideas
Good video and I like the background music too! Thanks.
Awww thank you!
Could you also share the metal or plastic holder if the caulk..so I get the right part thank u!

perfect dyi, not to long and learned what I wanted.
Hey thanks so much for this video - it was really helpful. Much appreciated!
“Caulk Zone” is now in my vocabulary.
Can u use sealant
Do i need to completely remove old sealant before applying new one?

What if you’re in an apt and the wood is light brown thinking of using clear 🤔
1/27/2023 went into home Depot today and got myself some dap we going for it!
The window sealing around the edges outside can let cold in too.
Very helpful, thank you!

Why you even here then? Everyone’s an “expert” these days
Thanks RUclips dad !
Is that daylight showing on the sides of the windows before caulk?????
Looked like it.
Thanks for sharing!
Good because I have no idea what I'm doing but have about 6 windows to do.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks brother!
only for laytex if your using a wet spounge or rag
Thank you sir
Thank you
No problem!
Wow that would be a big No no in denmark but good video mate 👍
Thank you!👊
For an all-wood window with six or so small panes (to the side of the front door), do you caulk between each of the panes and the wood?
You should calk wherever the gaps in the pains are. I know your comment was is a month old so you probably figured it out. If there is gap where the panes are letting the outside elements in you should seal it then paint it if you decide to.

I like your video..

Glad this helped some others, but this didn't help at all. What if the wall is not white and the windows are vinyl and white?

Small tip = caulk not all over
Apply little more and use a tool to point with soapy water
That’s what I do keep a wet finger when going back over it
Thanks!
Never underestimate the wet sponge
Soapy finger helps smoothing 👉
My advice, if you need Caulking "Tips, or Tricks", Skip to the next video!!
It's better to have the finger wet from the water and soap and to just slide down on the silicone...

2minute how to done in 5 minutes
What alot of people do wrong is run their finger down it period.
Please dont caulk you windows like this or with 230 for that matter.. 230 should only be used outside, its a waiste of money using it indoors..
