- I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls or "The Gipsy Girl's Dream" is a popular aria from The Bohemian Girl, an 1843 opera by Michael William Balfe an Irishman, with lyrics by Alfred Bunn. It is sung in the opera by the character Arline, who is in love with Thaddeus, a Polish nobleman and political exile. It has been performed and recorded by many artists. This performance by Sissel is from a concert in Dalhalla.
If there was one song, in the world, that got me so emotional every single time. It would be this song. My heart just loves listening to this again and again.
If the angels can sing, they surely learned from you, Sissel. Thank you for making my life happier.
I'm so in awe of her. Sissel holds a special place in my heart. Wow! What a beautiful beautiful song. It never gets old for me.
Lovely performance of this old classic. In her singing of it she lays reasonable claim to be one of the age's greatest lyric sopranos.
I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls
That I was the hope and the pride.
I had riches all too great to count
And a high ancestral name.
But I also dreamt which pleased me most
That you loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same.
I dreamt that suitors sought my hand,
That knights upon bended knee
And with vows no maidens heart could withstand,
They pledged their faith to me.
And I dreamt that one of that noble host
Came forth my hand to claim.
But I also dreamt which charmed me most
That you loved me still the same
That you loved me
You loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same.
Beautifully sung, beautiful artist....and beautiful girls in the choir. How could anyone not like this?
I love the Sutherland version of this beautiful Balfe aria - who doesn't? But - wow - this modern version has been stripped right back, with an added beautiful piano accompaniment and harp interlude and an interlude from the chorus. I haven't mentioned Sissel's voice you, as I have been trying to think of superlatives for her fabulous instrument. Joan Sutherland was known as La Stupenda, I think Sissel's performance here is stupendous. It's demure, cheeky, and dreamy - the final two words "the same" are a pure delight (as is the rest of the aria) and her smile lights up the stage. Straight onto my favourites list and I'm writing this after five straight plays. Wonderful! Thank God for RUclips and for this Sissel video.
Don´t like any of opera singers versions, they use too much heavy vibrato, too loud together with bad diction.
yes, she and her singing are so grand....thank you
What a beautiful melody sung by an amazing voice.Bravo!
Gorgeous, just sublime.
This song was sung in the Oliver and Hardy movie The Bohemian Girl. I am so glad I finally found it.
Big ups to Balfe! Wow...I got mesmerized by Enya's version of this song and then when that ended it just automatically loaded this one. Sissel is breathtaking. I cant believe I have never heard of her before. Enya's version is more ethereal and evokes more emotion from me but Sissels version is extremely clean and beautiful as well. This has to be one of the best songs ever written hands down. Since I was 17 (40 now) I have always been moved by "On My Own" from Les Miserables (Frances Ruffelle's version in particular) yet this song by Balfe might have surpassed it on my list of most moving songs. Anyone who is looking into links like this on youtube is moving their heart in the right direction for sure. Peace And Love To You All!
Sissel's usual magic--enchanting-- I listened to it twice
wonderful performance, as natural as its meant to be. superb pitch and dynamic control, esp the high notes, bravo
Simple, pure, ethereal.
so beautiful, so sweet!
A lovely, lovely version. Love from Ireland.
Love is timeless ❤️
So beautyful the best version !!!!
Perfection!
So sweet and there are other versions as well This is so wonderful
The only singer that I have seen singing this song with that beautiful smile on her face. Other singers tells me this a very difficult song to sing.
Superb voice and beautiful lady. Thanks.
totally awesome love it dont here it much these days thanks for sharing
She is still the very best !
Maravilhosa interpretação, como tudo o que vem de Sissel.
(Wonderful interpretation, like everything that comes from Sissel.)
As this aria is about a young woman dreaming of her love, to me it feels that it should have young woman (Almost girlish) quality about it. For me , Sissel's version does this beautifully. Enya's mystical version and the operetic versions while beautifully sung, don't give me the same feel of the aria.
Lovely Sissel!!!
Beautiful woman beautiful voice beautiful song
voice , scene presence , charm , gentle smile : can you wish more ? Alain
I got chills immediately ❤
Who couldn't love Sissel?
Agreed 100%
she has power~!!!
간단.명료하면서 맑은 목소리..마음에 든다.(simple,pure and cler voice..I like that.)
Excellent Sissel .
SISSEL !...TODO eres: ÁNGEL del cielo, VOZ de DIOS ... INIGUALABLE SER...MUJER !!!
During this performance, Sissel was crying! It broke my heart. Do not know what was up setting her. Do not judge her when in grief.
Beautiful
Best Rendition for me
Hello Sissel my dear, I'm your new friend from Brazil ... and ... I am your fan !! Kisses. Ivan
Bella Sissel
Muy bonita voz
Sissel is just the best.
Haunting
this is the best version i love
Good performance, but nothing quite beats the way Enya sings this song. Its absolutely magical.
Enya live? If you mean a recording by Enya she uses overdubbing that gives an effect that in my opinion isn't comparable to a live performance, but wonderful to listen to.
Sissel in "Dalhalla". What a tender and contrariwise powerful voice. Unfortunately nearly unknown.

19th Century romanticism idealizes manhood, womanhood, and love.
Yes. It makes a nice change
YES, as opposed to 21st century CYNICISM and NIHILISM, which are out to destroy and bury all three. So much the worse for humanity !!!! 😪😪😪

They wish they had this in Valhalla.

I've heard Enya's version of this but I prefer this one. Yes, Sissel we do love you still the same
The 'Dickensian' performance by actress (Nancy) who performs this tune in the Pub, is far better. The 'Dickensian' version is more pure & more to the culture of that time-era. Natural lilt. Full orchestra is not needed. Just simple piano player and a woman's light voice to sing the tune, in full.
I like Enya's version better although Sissel is my favorite
Maybe it's because I'm a mick or paddy ,, but, I think Enyas version is quite better.
Well the guy who wrote it was a Paddy,so any version is good to me,it was my grandmother that introduced me to the Bohemian girl.
Not a patch on Enya version
You're comparing bananas to oranges. Enya s was a studio production. a cocktail of sound engineering. Kyrkjebo is giving pure spring water here.
Sorry to disagree with you here, Enya is a very fine artist and has a beautiful version of this song which I love, but is studio produced, this version is live - Sissels voice here is fantastic and it's live!
Good performance but not nearly so good as Rosina Lawrence's rendition of this aria in the Laurel & Hardy movie (1936) The Bohemian girl.
Lovely, but I don't see the need for the choir in the middle. Simple beauty needs no embellishment.
Probably for my taste its definitely Elina Garanca - Sutherland a bit over decorated and enya, breathy and short-noted, Sissel nice but over modernised - after all its an old romantic number and doesn't bear much modern interpretation.

Definitely not for her
Enya's version is far superior.... hands down !
Amen - she has just the right timing and sound.
this sounds too ordinary
enyas version is better thsn this
Different.
