  • Cool Song
    Lyrics:
What are we all living for?
If nothing's worth dying for tonight
    Your dreams are not enough
    What I need is love
That's worth laying down my life
    Sing along,
    Just like they taught us
It's soothing your mind this lullaby
    No heaven above us
Just mile after mile of empty sky
    No right or wrong
    Can you imagine?
A world where there's no more need to cry
    But no joy or passion
Its seems that the price is much to high
But I am holding out for something real
    And though you offered peace
What I really need comes in so much more
    Your dreams are not enough
What I need is love that's worth dying for
You say that you're a dreamer
    Well I'm a dreamer too
But I wont sing your lullaby
    However well intentioned
    Its neither good nor true
The pallid dream is just a lie
But I am holding out for something real
    And though you offered peace
What I really need comes in so much more
    Your dreams are not enough
What I need is love that's worth dying for
What are we all living for
If nothing's worth dying for tonight?

This song is a direct answer to John Lennon's "Imagine". It talks about how this idea of world peace is not a tangible idea, and furthermore, Lennon's song either discounts or grossly misinterprets this idea of love. A life devoid of love is in essence a life devoid of meaning or purpose. Think about it, not once in "Imagine" is the word love ever used.
When I think of this song, I also tend to think of a cover of "Imagine" by the band A Perfect Circle. It's faithful to the original, but at the same time it's a very weathered-down version of the song, as if to say how everyone knows the lyrics to such a timeless song but little has been done to put forth an effort to creating a peaceful resolve to the world's problems. I encourage you to go listen to it. :)
(The Burnout Revenge soundtrack was awesome, by the way. Found a lot of good bands from that soundtrack; Finch, Emanuel, Billy Talent, Bullet for my Valentine, Unwritten Law, and these guys. :D)

I've always loved this song and really disliked "Imagine", a few days ago in my Government class there was this discussion on "Imagine" and so many people were just agreeing with it so blindly, but me being such a quiet guy i just sat there shaking my head wishing I could blast this song out.

To be honest, this song puts imagine and Lennon humbly in their place. How well this song was written by a "kid" in a California "punk band" in response to a song from such a legendary song writer baffles me. Dont get me wrong im not bashing on the beetles or Lennon or anything, but it is just a testament to how talented Dustin truly is.

I don't think that ideologies like nationalism and organized religion are worth dying for at all but I can agree that love is. To truly care enough about a person or cause for good in the world is very admirable. In short, people should care about people not institutions.

It's probably because this was probably first released on the Hopelessly Devoted to You, Vol. 6 compilation from 2006. It's a great 3 disc compilation it comes with 2 CDs and a DVD that includes the music videos for Deadbolt and Betrayal Is A Symptom if I'm recalling the song names correctly.

-Go onto the website GrooveShark (it's a free online radio that only plays what you want)
-Type in the 'search music' area of the website "Thrice Lullaby"
-Choose the 3rd one down from the list, or if the order changes, under the "hopelessly devoted to you" album (not the vheissu album, the quality isn't as good)
And add to your current songs!
thumb this up so everyone knows!

But I have to say as much as I have always identified with huge parts of thrice's lyrics I dont agree with them on this one.
As I understood it, they are implying that there needs to be sadness and dissatisfaction in order for happyness to work. and that I think is *im sorry* utter bullshit. Thats just a way to justify our idleness. If one REALLY wants to be happy, he can be. That works without any need to cry

I agree with John Lennons sentiments about the world coming together as one but why on earth is abolishing religion necessary for that? What's needed is to respect differences of opinion not hippies saying "I refuse to make peace with people whose spiritual beliefs differ from mine". Besides Jesus already proclaimed a way for the world to come together. He called it the Kingdom of God.

    • @ProgrammedForDamage
      @ProgrammedForDamage 4 года назад

I'm a bit late the party, but it's more Dustin is critiquing John Lennon's 'Imagine'. "Imagine there's no heaven / above us only sky" - "No heaven above us / Just mile after mile of empty sky". He's essentially saying that ideas of a utopia posed by 'Imagine' are hollow and empty, as there is nothing in there to inspire or elevate people with a dream or a divine spark that elevates us to be greater than we are capable.
Long story short, it's totally inline with Thrice's other material once you open the hood.

Imagine is a naive song about moral relativism in a world of moral absolutes.
