Cher was speaking out in her performance for a lot of us mixed-race Native Americans, which everybody understood back then, so nobody minded or cared whether she was actually part Cherokee or not. She even wanted to believe that she was part Native American, and had heard some rumors in her family that they were part Cherokee, even though there was no apparent proof, one way or the other. That's a compliment to us half-bloods", I think, so I'm glad she raised awareness about some abusive people who take it beyond joking among family and friends! Hats off to the writers, musicians and producers involved in this project, as well! It was a performance piece of art which included relevant stereotypic images effectively, in my opinion, and was done with good intentions, and never meaning or claiming to be literally culturally authentic, which would not have touched, and reached as many people as it did back in the '70s when I was growing up next to "Indian Territory", also known as "Oklahoma", which was named after our tribe, which is where many of our ancestors, including my own, were force marched in the dead of winter with only summer clothing on, on the "Trail of Tears". This song helped me to learn as I was growing up not to be ashamed of who I was, even if people from my own nation rejected, or discriminated against me which did happen at times, or if white people made fun of my tribal dress, etc. because they didn't think that I "looked like an Indian", being mixed.
kids have no filter and they say exactly what they think, not thinking about if it will hurt someone. They learn as they grow to filter these things. Loved your reaction to one of my all time favorite songs and singers!

I’m part Cherokee (Father’s side), and Apache (mother’s side) so in total I’m 1/8 Native American and I don’t find anything offensive about what she’s wearing because of the message of the song. The song is pointing out general racism as well as racism within races. You see it a lot with black people. So many black people say “oh she/he’s light skinned they’ve got to be mixed with white” or “oh they have blue/green eyes they aren’t fully black”. We’ve seen it with music artists like Mariah Carey, or even Whitney houston. Most people don’t realize this but Whitney houston was not always welcomed by the black community and she was even booed at most of the BET awards because they said she sounded “too white”.
I have German, Irish and Cherokee heritage. I'm lucky. Where I grew up people were more fascinated than mean. But I'll never forget meeting a woman from a different state. Her entire family had been passing for white but when she was born she was so obviously native that people began treating her family poorly.

I saw her in Jacksonville for her Dressed to kill tour and she was 68 and still absolutely amazing!! To this day it was the best production and performance I've been to and I've been to A LOT!👏👏😁

The funny thing is, she technically really isn't halfbreed. Her mother looks way more Caucasian than Indigenous American. Her dad heritage background is Arabic.
